SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Food Bank on Thursday selected 35 nonprofit organizations around the county with the goal of giving them the food and supplies they need to continue helping families in their area.La Maestra Community Health Center provides health and support services to families from the South Bay to East County. Many of those they serve come from low-income households.Before the COVID-19 pandemic, they helped about 300 families a week. Since then, that number has doubled, and they’re now feeding close to 600 families a week.At a news conference with mayors from San Diego, Chula Vista, and Escondido, the San Diego Food Bank announced the kickoff of their “Super Pantries” program, where they have partnered with 35 pre-selected organizations.Instead of holding the mass distribution food events that they’ve done in the past, the Food Bank will now focus on providing these organizations with food and supplies.San Diego Food Bank President/CEO James Floros said, “Now with the grass roots approach, they can go into their communities and get what they need.”Each organization will also get a check for ,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Though there are still votes to be counted, data from the San Diego County Registrar of Voters is showing how residents voted on some of the most widely publicized races this midterm election.While the Registrar's data reports 100 percent of precincts, there are about 490,000 outstanding ballots waiting to be processed — so these numbers are not the county's official results.They do, however, show how San Diegans compare in statewide races.STATEThe race for governor was fairly close according to the data, with Democrat Gavin Newsom leading 53.87 percent to Republican John Cox's 46.13 percent.Cox conceded to Newsom late Tuesday after statewide numbers showed Newsom take the lead, winning 59 percent to 41 percent.RELATED: Nathan Fletcher, Jim Desmond win San Diego County Board of Supervisors seatsIn the race for U.S. Senator, San Diegans voted for Democrat Dianne Feinstein 53.6 percent to fellow Democrat Kevin De Leon's 46.4 percent. In California, Feinstein took about 56 percent of the vote.California's Attorney General race was squarely in the hands of Democrat Xavier Becerra in San Diego County, who gained 55.16 percent of the vote.LOCALAt a local level, the close races continued, with Democrat Mike Levin taking former Rep. Darrell Issa's 49th District seat with 56.86 percent of the vote.The race for the 50th District remained close as well, with Republican incumbent Duncan Hunter holding on over challenger Ammar Campa-Najjar with 53.94 percent of the vote in San Diego.PROPOSITIONSProposition 6, known as the gas tax repeal, took favor in San Diego County with 52.64 percent of the vote. Though statewide the prop failed, only gaining a 45 percent approval vote.The Daylight Saving Time measure, Proposition 7, also had fans in San Diego County with 68.55 percent approval. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department has a new million tool to fight wildfires.The department unveiled its S-70i Firehawk helicopter Thursday, a modified version of the military’s Black Hawk helicopter.The aircraft is bigger, faster and capable of dropping more water than the city’s other two helicopters combined. The Firehawk has a 1,000-gallon tank compared to the 375-gallon tanks in Copters 1 and 2.San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Chief Colin Stowell said the Firehawk, dubbed Copter 3, represents the “latest and greatest in fire suppression and rescue capabilities.”RELATED: Chula Vista brush fire highlights rare night water drop technique“San Diego has over 45,000 properties adjacent to canyon rims and open spaces, posing a significant fire risk in our city. The speed of our response and capabilities of our equipment during the initial attack of those vegetation fires is critical,” he said.With a retractable snorkel, firefighters can refill the Firehawk’s water tank in less than a minute, allowing the helicopter to make more drops in less time, Stowell said.“Our ability to quickly get into the air and to make a difference will absolutely help to save lives,” said Mayor Kevin Faulconer.In addition to the crew of three, the Firehawk can carry up to 12 passengers, meaning it can shuttle six more firefighters than its predecessors to hard-to-reach places.RELATED: Blackhawk Helicopter joins the SDG&E firefighting arsenalThe helicopter also has advanced capabilities for night missions, with a high-intensity searchlight and a state-of-the-art obstacle avoidance system.San Diego Fire operates the only helicopters in the county outfitted to fight fires at night.To accompany the new helicopter, the city is building a .7 million hangar to house all three helicopters.“The state-of-the-art, 30,000-square-foot facility will help protect the helicopters from rust and corrosion as well as allow for indoor maintenance work,” said city spokesman Gustavo Portela in a statement. The city recently completed an Air Ops Division building to house the crew. Previously, pilots and crew members were housed in RVs and trailers and the helicopters were kept outside, Stowell said. 2228

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System is joining the effort to make more affordable housing. The MTS Board of Directors recently greenlit a new 410-unit housing development at the Grantville trolley station. 156 of the units will be affordable and 254 will be market rate ‘student-oriented’ apartments. MTS is partnering with developers Affirmed Housing and Greystar on the project. It is estimated the total population housed on the planned trolley station property will be 1,049 people. The development would be built on top of the current parking lot. The developers will be making their own parking spaces on the site and MTS will be adding 96 replacement parking spots, according to transit officials. In a statement on the prospective parking concerns MTS wrote, “we average about 80 to 120 commuters per weekday that use the park and ride, so we are in the wheelhouse of demand.” MTS says it is currently looking into developing four more of its stations into similar housing in downtown, El Cajon and Chula Vista. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating after a man died in Fallbrook late Friday night.Deputies responded to the 440 block of Ammunition Road around 10:40 p.m. to assist the North County Fire Department with an injured man.When deputies arrived, they found a man identified as Nicolas Ramirez suffering from an unknown traumatic injury.Ramirez was then taken to the hospital where he later died.
