BALTIMORE, Marlyland — A mother living without her teenage son who was shot and killed last year got to meet the girl whose life he saved with his heart.    Xavier Young was an organ donor.Although lost to gun violence, his gift saved more than one life — it saved an entire family."I think he really wanted me to see that he’s OK and his heart is also still going," said Jennifer Young.Young is Xavier's mother. He was 14 years old when he was shot and killed in Laurel, Maryland last year."We buried him a year ago back on (November 6) so this week has been really tough," Young said.But in darkness, there is a little light as Young met the girl who now holds her son's heart."My son would’ve loved to meet her in life and would’ve heard about her all the time so it’s bittersweet to me," said Young.For Gwendolyn Ihm's family, it was an emotional and humbling meeting."As we celebrate Gwendolyn’s heart transplant, we also have to remember that at that same time there’s another family that are remembering another year of not having their loved one with them," said Brian Ihm, whose daughter now has Young's heart.Ihm was diagnosed with leukemia before she was just 2 months old and the radiation wreaked havoc on her heart."Without Xavier’s heart Gwendolyn would not be at school, she would not be running around, she would not be able to participate like all the kids," Ihm said.Young heard her son's heart beating inside of Gwen."It’s not really him. It’s a piece, and that’s amazing too," said Young.The families have spoken but never met. "I just feel like they remind me so much of him. It’s like he went back to family is what I want to say," Young told WMAR.Xavier was able to donate seven organs and save five lives after his death last November."Without the help of God, maybe Jennifer (Young) wouldn't have made the decision that she made," said Ihm.The hope is for Gwen to be a normal 13-year-old."We just want her to have a couple of good years of health," Ihm said, "and Xavier’s gift has given us that." 2126

BOCA RATON, Fla. — New developments in the investigation into a Boca Raton pet store where authorities say a dead puppy and several sick puppies were found late last year.The owner of Poochie Couture was arrested on Tuesday and is facing multiple animal cruelty charges.Marc Rosenbluth, 37, has since bonded out of jail.Last November, dozens of puppies were removed from Poochie Couture by Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, and the pet store was shut down.Rosenbluth surrendered some of the dogs after Boca Raton Police and Animal Care and Control said they found a dead 3-month-old puppy, along with several other sick animals."Had we not gotten there with Boca P.D., most likely the death toll would have much higher," said Dianne Sauve, the director of Palm Beach County Animal Care and ControlSauve said closing the pet store is a victory.Records show that of the 58 dogs inside the shop, investigators found the dead puppy and six french bulldogs that were sick with multiple problems. Two of them needed intensive care.Rosenbluth's arrest report said Poochie Couture lacked prevention of injury and did not assist with ongoing veterinary care."It is a shame some animals had to die in a result of this," said Kelly Evans, who called police in November, claiming Rosenbluth and his wife were not taking care of their puppies. "I am glad he is arrested now and there is some justice for the animals."Sauve said ACC likes to tell people to always adopt and don't shop. BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. -- There are invaders in Gulf waters, and researchers at Florida Gulf Coast University are working to find out more about them, so they can be stopped. Invasive exotic Lionfish are native to the Pacific Ocean. But they're now appearing more frequently in the Gulf where they have no known predators.FGCU Marine Scientist Mike Parsons said the growing lionfish population is threatening to crowd out the native species so many Southwest Floridians love to catch and eat."They're competing with other fish for places to live and food to eat," Parsons said."So they'll be bad for other fish like grouper, for example." he added.Parsons and other researchers are looking for solutions as they closely study lionfish at FGCU's Vester Marine Science Field station in Bonita Springs. Researcher Emma DeRoy said part of the problem is that lionfish can live in every part of the Gulf."They're habitat generalists," said DeRoy, whose work at Vester Field Station focuses on lionfish. "They'll thrive in sea grass, mangroves, corals - anything with structure."DeRoy said lionfish also tend to eat the small fish that eat algae off coral.  If those small fish aren't around, there's nothing protecting living coral from all that algae."Then the algae overgrows the coral and basically suffocates it," she says.  "And then you get coral dying off."She says lionfish also grow up faster than local species like grouper - giving them a head start on establishing themselves in a habitat and eating whatever they want. Lionfish mature within a year, whereas grouper take around 4-to-5 years, DeRoy said. "I think the other big factor is they re-produce so often and they produce so many eggs," Parsons said "Their population can just explode." Parsons estimated their reproductive rate to be astronomical."Somewhere on the order of 2 million eggs per female every time they spawn," says Parsons. "And they may spawn multiple times per year.""That's a lot of youngin's," he adds.Charter boat captain Billy D'Antuono said huge numbers of lionfish are being hauled in from the northern Gulf off the panhandle of Florida."They'll go and clean off a spot and get 500, and they'll go back the next week and there's 500 more," says D'Antuono."They're bringing back thousands of them in a day," he adds.Some say the biggest hope for getting the lionfish population under control is human consumption."The one good thing is they are a delicious fish," says Parsons."Lion fish are just very good to eat," says D'Antuono. "You can eat it as sushi," he added.D'Antuono is quick to point out lionfish are not poisonous - just venomous. He said that distinction matters."The venom is only in the spine, so the meat is very good," he says.  "It's one my favorite fish to eat."More Florida restaurants are now selling lionfish, and more stores (Whole Foods for example) are selling it at prices that create financial incentive for the commercial fishing industry."It's the same level as grouper prices, a pound," D'Antuono said.D'Antuono is hoping to generate more interest in hunting lionfish by posting videos of his spearfishing adventures on his website.As researchers look for ways to get the lionfish population under control, they're calling on you to do your part.When Scripps station WFTX in Fort Myers asked Parsons what people should do if they see a lionfish, he response is simple but direct. "Kill it," he says.  "And then eat it. Remove it from the environment." D'Antuono recommended killing lionfish carefully, though, because their spines are venomous.D'Antuono said he has been stung before and described the pain as memorable.  "It's like someone putting a nail in your hand and somebody slamming the nail in your hand for about two hours," he says. "It's very painful."But he said he fears the bigger pain lionfish will inflict will be on the fragile ecosystem in our Gulf. "They've invasive," he said. "Over the years, these fish could be the only thing left."D'Antuono is encouraging others to join him in spearfishing lionfish. Mike and Tami Hulsizer never hesitated to rebuild. “Just knowing that although losing the house originally was tragedy, but I knew that we would rise again and I knew that my Lord would take care of it,” said Mike.Mike says faith has gotten his family through the challenging year. So has compassion from those willing to help.
