BUFFALO, N.Y. — When a man's car was damaged in an alleged hit-and-run accident, it was a note from a sixth grader who helped him find who was responsible.According to Andrew Sipowicz, he received an anonymous note on his car from a student at Houghton Academy explaining that she had been aboard a bus that had damaged his car in an accident. The bus driver then fled the scene.Sipowicz shared the note alongside two pictures on his Twitter feed with the caption: "Shoutout to the anonymous 6th grader for saving me a couple thousand (Bus not drawn to scale)."As of early Wednesday afternoon, Sipowicz's tweet has been liked more than half a million times and retweeted more than 100,000 times.He later noted on Twitter that he had found the girl who wrote the letter and was "in the process of finding a way to reward her for her actions." 869

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - The Orange County father who tied up his daughter and gagged her in an attempt to force her into drug rehab in Mexico could face charges. California Highway Patrol officers pulled over the car Monday night on Interstate 5 off of Cannon Road in Carlsbad after getting calls from drivers about a possible kidnapping. "Received a report of a woman bound and gagged in the back seat, kidnapped essentially," said CHP Sgt. Mike Morrin. The 17-year-old girl was with her 57-year-old father and 21-year old sister. According to the CHP, both the father and sister could face charges ranging from kidnapping to child endangerment. "You just can't gag someone and bind them and take them in the back of a car to a foreign country. That's just not acceptable. We're trying to sort out the details," said Sgt. Morrin. The teen admitted to officers she's been using methamphetamines for the last year. Her relatives told 10News she escaped twice from local rehabs. The family lives in San Juan Capistrano. Nancy Knott is a licensed psychotherapist. She spent years working as a treatment counselor for Scripps before going into private practice. Knott is not familiar with this case, but says parents often reach a breaking point. "When it reaches a certain point, desperation sets in, and anytime desperation sets in, people don't always make the correct choices. They're trying a lot of times to save the life of their child," said Knott.Knott said families in California can hire outside help when trying to force a minor into treatment. "A parent could arrange for a transport company to take their child into treatment and they do not use physical restraints unless absolutely necessary. Again, first choice is to have the parents to seek out some expert advice, try to work with their child themselves, if not, usually the one off approach works better especially with the child parent relationship to bring in a professional, to work with the child and the family. The family would be signing off permission, or the guardian, to the transport company to take that child to treatment," said Knott adding that the company should be licensed and bonded. Knott doesn't recommend seeking treatment in Mexico. "I've never taken a patient to Mexico. And frankly, never will. The laws are different there. The family is always at great risk of crossing that border because they are not going to be the same laws as in the US, so it's riskier; that's my opinion," said Knott.Knott said early intervention is critical, but recovery can still take years. "Treatment doesn't always work the first or second time with adolescents. We look at keep them alive until 25, meaning the brain is more developed at 25 to have a little more rational way of looking at their problem," said Knott. (CNS) -- Police Friday announced the arrest of a 54-year-old Poway man on suspicion of killing a young woman in Carlsbad 33 years ago.James Charles Kingery was arrested Wednesday in connection with the sexual assault and murder of 26-year-old Julia Hernandez-Santiago, whose body was found on Oct. 10, 1987, on an ivy-covered embankment in the 2100 block of Alga Road, west of Alicante Road, Carlsbad police spokesman Jodee Reyes said.The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office determined the cause of death was asphyxiation due to strangulation."Investigators were able to recover several pieces of key evidence at the time; however, a suspect was never identified," Reyes said.Over the next three decades, detectives continued to follow leads and technology eventually helped reveal new investigative angles to probe.Last March, San Diego County sheriff's deputies arrested a man on narcotics and weapons violations and took a DNA sample from him, as required by law based on his alleged offenses, Reyes said. Last May, the sheriff's crime lab notified Carlsbad police that the DNA samples from the 1987 murder case were a match for Kingery.Kingery was booked into the San Diego Central jail around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday on suspicion of murder, according to jail records. He was being held without bail pending his arraignment, scheduled for July 31.A motive for the killing has not been disclosed. 1428

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) — A pair of brothers was arrested this week after police say they tried to carjack a man working on his vehicle on Interstate 5, assaulted him, and fled onto Camp Pendleton property.The brothers were traveling on southbound I-5 on Tuesday at about 10 a.m. when their Ford Mustang broke down just north of Las Pulgas Road. The pair walked to Vista Point and asked a truck driver for a ride to Long Beach, but the driver said no, California Highway Patrol said.The brothers then approached a 58-year-old man from San Diego who was working on his broken-down vehicle. The man was leaning over the engine of his vehicle with the hood up when one of the brothers placed the man in a headlock while the other brother assaulted the man in the face and body, CHP said.The truck driver who denied the brothers a lift saw the attack and came to the victim's aid. The brothers fled the area west, and climbed over a fence onto Camp Pendleton, said CHP.Camp Pendelton Police were nearby and quickly found and detained the two. CHP officers responded to the scene as well. The victim received moderate to major injuries during the assault and is expected to recover.Gonzalo Lopez, 24, and Eusebio Lopez, 19, both from Long Beach, were arrested and charged with assault and battery, and attempted carjacking. Gonzalo was also charged with driving under the influence while Eusebio was charged with being drunk in public. 1444
