It stands for selflessness, accountability, integrity, and love," says senior Evan Brown.The second-oldest high school in the San Diego Unified School District, La Jolla's football program hit a rough patch in recent years. The Vikings hadn't posted a winning season since 2007, when most of the current players were in preschool and kindergarten.The changed when head coach Tyler Roach took over a couple of years ago, and the Vikings are hoping to build on 6-6 and 7-5 records the past two seasons."When I took over, kind of figuring out what we wanted to be about, how we wanted to establish our culture, trying to latch on to the Viking motto, and that's where the "Sail The Ship" motto came up."Roach admits he borrowed the idea from Minnesota Golden Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck. Fleck made the phrase "Row The Boat" famous as a motto when he coached Western Michigan to a 13-1 record and a Cotton Bowl appearance in 2016."P.J. LA MESA (CNS) - One person was killed in a two-vehicle crash on westbound Interstate 8 in La Mesa and lanes of the freeway were blocked this morning until further notice.The crash occurred near state Route 125 at 9:55 p.m. Friday, according to the California Highway Patrol.A witness told officers one vehicle was being driven recklessly just before hitting the center divider wall.The crash blocked three westbound lanes of the freeway and a SigAlert was issued at 10:30 p.m., the CHP said.The age, gender, and name of the victim was not disclosed. 557
LEMON GROVE, CALIF. (KGTV) - Lemon Grove’s financial issues have some in city hall talking about bankruptcy or disincorporation.The city says if action is not taken to correct their budget deficit, it will eat into reserve funds that they cannot afford to lose.Lemon Grove City Council voted against increasing its sales tax last month which would have added almost two million dollars to their yearly general fund.An identical discussion occurred in 2010 when the then City Council was asked to consider a tax measure on the ballot and it was denied.“I don’t think they’re qualified to run a lemonade stand,” said Brent Johnson, a Lemon Grove resident, “I don’t understand why people spend so much money on frivolous things.”Lemon Grove has already outsourced its law enforcement to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and if the city was disincorporated its remaining governmental responsibilities would go the county.“I think it should be the county’s turn to run things here” said another resident Doug Hutton, “things could get better here.”The city maintains they are not considering disincorporation or bankruptcy right now, but a decision will have to be made in the next 4 to 7 years.Only 17 cities in the history of California have been disincorporated. 1277
LAKELAND, Fla. — An 85-year-old man was bitten by an alligator at a retirement community Monday afternoon, FWC says.Officials say the alligator was 9-feet-9-inches and trappers pulled it out of a pond Monday afternoon.It happened at the Cypress Lakes Retirement Community.The man was reportedly bitten on the foot and taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where the extent of his injuries are not known at this time.The community posted on its Facebook page about the incident and reminded residents about safety around alligators.Jane Rickel lives here and says trappers found the man’s white sneaker in the gator’s mouth confirming they got the right one.“His wife heard him screaming supposedly. And I guess his neighbor came to his rescue. There isn’t a pond in here that doesn’t have alligators,” she said. 828
