BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland will continue working with Taiwan to expand and deepen cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, a spokeswoman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council said Sunday.Commenting on mayoral elections in the island's five cities, which concluded Saturday, spokeswoman Fan Liqing said the mainland had "paid close attention" to the results.The mainland would steadily promote cross-Strait relations and improve the living standards of people on both sides, she said."We hope Taiwan society is stable and people live and work in peace," she said.Fan said that over the past two years, improved cross-Strait relations had brought tangible benefits to people on both sides, and the peaceful development of relations had become common ground.Of the five mayoral elections, the ruling Kuomintang won three while the opposition Democratic Progressive Party won two.

HANGZHOU, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Rescue efforts are continuing to save a worker trapped 18 meters under sea surface for almost 18 hours in Jiaxing Harbor, east China's Zhejiang Province, local authorities said.The worker, 43, surnamed Fan from central China's Hubei Province, was stuck at the bottom of a steel shielding canister in which he was working at 9 a.m. Thursday. The shielding canister deformed under sudden increase of hydraulic pressure from flood tide, according to local media report.The shielding canister, a part of an offshore platform, is one meter in diameter. Fan was working at the bottom of the canister that joins a cement column when the incident happened.Rescue staff said, "We are making slow progress because of complex geological conditions. The deformed section, about two to four meters under the sea surface, has been squeezed to only 3cm wide at the narrowest part."Thankfully, the shielding canister has not fractured, though seriously deformed.Rescue workers have decided to cut the cement column off the seabed to lift the shielding canister.Rescue efforts started at 10 a.m. Thursday. Food, including ham sausages and drinking water were supplied to the worker, through a flexible pipe. Fan asked for some cigarettes.Fan's family members have arrived at the site, praying for him at the bank.

NEW YORK, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- A video show about Chinese people made its debut on screens at Times Square on Monday, presenting Americans a multi-dimensional and vivid image of Chinese people.With China's traditional red as the theme color, the 60-second video was shown on six screens simultaneously at Times Square with a billboard written "Experience China" on top of the screens. The show highlights Chinese ordinary people and some important figures recognized by the international community, including Chinese pianist Lang Lang, basketball player Yao Ming and Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei, etc."The layout of the video is quite smart. I like it," Charlotte Mcguckin, 18, a high school student in New York, told Xinhua, adding that "everyone (in the video) looks happy.""Look, that's Yao Ming. I can recognize him, and also the female table tennis player standing beside him. She is very famous, " she said, pointing to the giant screen. "I learned in class that U.S. and China started diplomatic ties from playing the table tennis," she smiled.For Si Yaqin, who came to New York with her son for vacation, watching the debut of the video is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. "It's my first time to New York, first time to Times Square," she told Xinhua. "How lucky I am here to witness this moment. GENEVA, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- It is time for the Doha Development Round to begin to center around the Chair-led multilateral process and to come up with a revised text, Sun Zhenyu, the Chinese ambassador to the World Trade Organization (WTO), said on Tuesday at a WTO Trade Negotiation Committee meeting."Time is not with us," Sun said, stressing the need to "plan wisely" in the year ahead to seize the window of opportunity in 2011, which is recognized by both G20 and APEC leaders in early November.Sun commended progress generated from the "Cocktail Approach," which is made up of small-group informal discussions and brainstorming among the ambassadors, carried out throughout the last few months.The brainstorming "paves way for possible progress in quite a few areas such as development, rules and dispute settlement," the Chinese ambassador said."But after all, the brainstorming is not and could not replace negotiating sessions," he added, calling for intensified engagements to deliver the revised texts at the earliest time."One of the major achievements of the G20 Summit in Seoul is that leaders reaffirmed their strong commitment to the DDA and directed us as negotiators to engage in across-the-board negotiations to promptly bring the Doha Development Round to a conclusion," the Chinese ambassador said."Across-the-board trade-offs could have a better chance when we have the texts on the table," Sun noted.He also reiterated the stance on honoring the leaders' instructions through "respecting the mandate" and "building on the progress already achieved," in order to achieve a balanced and ambitious outcome.In his speech, Sun gave priority to development as the top outcome of the Doha Round."Above everything, it has to be development-oriented," he said, giving a clear message that China is in favor of addressing the concerns of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Vulnerable Economies (SVEs) as a priority.
