(AP) — The first report cards of the new school year are arriving with a lot more Fs than usual, and it’s not just parents who are getting distressed. School districts from coast to coast have reported the number of students failing classes has risen by as many as two or three times — a sign of the struggles many students are having with distance learning. English language learners, those with disabilities, and other disadvantaged students have been at particular risk.Educators see a number of factors at play: Students learning from home skip assignments — or school altogether. RELATED: Rise in 'F' grades at some North County schools spark virtual learning concernsInternet access is limited or inconsistent, making it difficult to complete and upload assignments. In response schools have been ramping up outreach efforts, prioritizing the return of struggling students for in-person learning and in some cases changing grading policies and giving students more time to complete assignments. 1007

"We take many factors into account when determining driving routes, including the size of the road and the directness of the route. While we always work to provide the best directions, issues can arise due to unforeseen circumstances such as weather. We encourage all drivers to follow local laws, stay attentive, and use their best judgement while driving." 366

YouTube star Brooke Houts is the subject of a police investigation over a video that appears to show her abusing her Doberman.Los Angeles Police Officer Rosario Cervantes said the department's animal cruelty task force is looking into the matter but didn't offer further details.Houts posted the video to her YouTube channel, which has more than 330,000 subscribers. The video has since been taken down, though it's unclear whether that was done by her or by YouTube. However, viewers shared the video on social media, where it drew widespread criticism. In the 50-second video, Houts says she is attempting to prank her dog. "I put plastic wrap on the door. I'm gonna have him run out," she says. "We're just gonna see what he does."The video cuts, and Houts is then heard asking, "it doesn't faze you?" The dog jumps on her chest, and she responds by slapping him across the face.Later, Houts gets closer to the camera and engages in another altercation with the dog. She can be heard yelling "stop" and then appears to spit on the dog.Toward the end of the video, the dog attempts to get close to Houts' face, and she appears to lunge toward him, pushing him across the room.On Tuesday, Houts tweeted that she apologizes to anyone who has been affected negatively by the footage."Anything I say isn't going to make those who believe I'm a bad person stop believing that," she wrote. "And I'm aware of this."Houts adds that the way she appeared in the video is out of character for her."I want to clarify that I am NOT a dog abuser or animal abuser in any way, shape, or form," she wrote. "Anyone who has witnessed or heard true animal abuse will be able to clearly see that."She also denied spitting on the dog but said "I understand how it could look like I did."Houts said that her dog, Sphinx, is in need of costly one-on-one training and that she and her family are getting him a trainer.Neither Houts nor YouTube has responded to requests for comment about the incident or for details on whether there will be any repercussions on Houts' channel.According to YouTube's 2087

It just got a bit harder to find the latest issue of Cosmopolitan at Walmart. The retail company said Tuesday that it's removing the women's magazine from checkout lines. The National Center on Sexual Exploitation said Walmart made the decision following conversations with the anti-pornography organization."As with all products in our store, we continue to evaluate our assortment and make changes. Walmart will continue to offer Cosmopolitan to customers that wish to purchase the magazine, but it will no longer be located in the checkout aisles," Walmart said in a statement. While the move "was primarily a business decision, the concerns raised were heard," the company added.Cosmopolitan magazine, which is published by Hearst, is known for its sex tips and advice for young women. It covers "men and love, work and money, fashion and beauty, health, self-improvement and entertainment," and reaches millions of readers each month, according to Hearst's website.Hearst did not immediately reply to a request for comment. In a statement, the National Center on Sexual Exploitation lauded the "significant policy change.""Walmart's removal of Cosmo from checkout lines is an incremental but significant step toward creating a culture where women and girls are valued as whole persons, rather than as sexual objects," Executive Director Dawn Hawkins said. The group takes issue with the magazine, and believes customers shouldn't have to see it while checking out at stores, because it "places women's value primarily on their ability to sexually satisfy a man and therefore plays into the same culture where men view and treat women as inanimate sex objects," Hawkins said. The National Center on Sexual Exploitation, which changed its name from Morality In Media in 2015, works to highlight the negative effects of pornography, which it calls a "public health crisis." 1899

With Facebook Live already rolling, Bryan Atkinson stepped out of a pickup truck into an empty South Carolina field and spoke to the camera."Here's the famous YETI," he said of the high-end ice chest. He then opened the top of the cooler, revealing a duct-taped cardboard box."There's the famous 22 pounds of Tannerite," he said, referring to the explosives often used for firearms practice. "This YETI ain't ready."After his friends drove the cooler to the middle of the field, Atkinson got down on one knee, readied his rifle and fired. With a resounding boom, the remains of the cooler exploded into the air."(If) YETI can't stand behind the NRA, I ain't standing behind YETI no more," he said in the video. The stunt, posted online Monday, is just one of a number of instances of National Rifle Association supporters destroying their YETI-branded coolers, mugs and related products in recent days amid a controversy over the company's perceived lack of support for gun owners. The outcry comes after many companies, including banks, rental car agencies and airlines, severed ties with the powerful gun lobby in the wake of February's mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida. Why NRA supporters are madYETI products are popular among those who love the outdoors and a cool (or hot) drink, making them a favorite with hunters, fishermen, campers and tailgaters. Most of the company's coolers sell for hundreds of dollars, and the most expensive option costs ,300.NRA supporters' problem with YETI started Friday when former NRA president Marion Hammer wrote a letter on behalf of the NRA-Institute for Legislative Action, saying that YETI had suddenly and without prior notice declined to do business with the NRA Foundation."They will only say they will no longer sell products to The NRA Foundation. That certainly isn't sportsmanlike. In fact, YETI should be ashamed," Hammer wrote.Three days later, YETI slammed that statement as "inaccurate" on its Facebook page. The company said it notified the NRA Foundation and a number of other organizations that they were eliminating outdated discounts."When we notified the NRA Foundation and the other organizations of this change, YETI explained that we were offering them an alternative customization program broadly available to consumers and organizations, including the NRA Foundation. These facts directly contradict the inaccurate statement the NRA-ILA distributed on April 20," YETI said. The company went on to defend its record of supporting hunters and others who love the outdoors."Moreover, YETI is unwavering in our belief in and commitment to the Constitution of the United States and its Second Amendment," the company wrote. 2735
