While political pundits pontificate about Tuesday’s election results, thousands of high school students around the country will have been hard at work forecasting their own.In a March Madness-style round-robin challenge, students pick states they think will go Democrat or Republican, filling out their own electoral map and entering it among thousands of others in the FANschool Challenge.“It’s something fun. It’s something different that the kids can kind of get a little competitive about,” said high school government and economics teacher Gerald Huesken. “[It’s] friendly academic competition.”Huesken helped start the challenge along with two other colleagues four years ago as the country was gearing up for the 2016 election between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Several of his students correctly predicted the Trump victory despite polls reflecting a different outcome. Back then, he says, it was only something for his class to do as they take what they learn in their civics and apply it to real-life situations, but now, it has exploded into an online format used by hundreds, if not thousands, of teachers across the country, says Huesken.“Right now, we’re looking at the different data from NBC, ABC, stuff like that [to guide our knowledge],” said Huesken. “It’s saying it’s looking pretty good for Joe Biden, but we thought that going into 2016.”Students get to draft states in a fantasy football format. They then learn about what is important to their voters, research news articles and polls, and then predict what they think will happen in 2020 based on what they find, putting together their minds and entering the bracket in a nationwide challenge for prizes.“I have both Florida and Ohio going Republican this year and giving Trump some votes,” said Mason, a junior in Huesken’s class who did not want to use his last name. “I also have Michigan going to Biden, leading him to a pretty comfortable victory.”Mason says the challenge has taught him how different regions of the United States approach different issues and how voting patterns change among different demographics.“If you asked me in 20 words or less why do you teach this course, it’s really because I feel like high school students, whether or not they’re voters, look at our political system and our political institutions and feel like they have no agency,” said Chris Stewart, a social studies teacher at a high school in St. Paul, Minnesota. Stewart helped start the challenge alongside Huesken and used it to helped formulate his fantasy politics course that he only offers during election years as a way to make the electoral process more relatable to many students who are not able to engage in the political process because they are not old enough to vote. 2764

With a growing number of Americans getting tattoos, there is also a larger number getting them removed. New technology is allowing the process to be more complete with less scarring and blistering.  In some ways, users believe it can undo bad choices.A recent Harris Poll shows tattoos are particularly prevalent among younger generations. About half of millennials and a third of Gen Xers say they have at least one, compared to just 13 percent of Baby Boomers. One in eight millennials have regrets about at least one tattoo. The men who own and run "ReversaTatt" David Cope and Wesley Henderson, say they are helping people erase those regrets, one laser session at a time.When a person gets a tattoo, it's a memory of the start of a chapter in life.  They can remember the whole experience of choosing the design and the placement.  In some ways, the laser can offer a page turn into a new chapter: one without that tattoo.Two women, Stephanie Goodman and Stephanie Gray, each came to ReversaTatt recently seeking tattoo removal assistance."They all came from different places and they all have different meanings, but I'm going to keep all these ones, they're not going anywhere," explained Gray.  Gray came to ReversaTatt for her first session to remove a design along her neck.  She says the story why it's coming off is private, but she would like this tattoo to disappear."It was a name, yeah, so it's going to be gone," said Gray.After a consultation, Cope points the PiQo laser at her neck and says, "here comes the heat." In 13 seconds, he backs off. The first treatment is done.  While the pain is a bit more intense than getting the tattoo, according to Gray, it's over quickly. "It was nothing," said Gray."The red from this little stripe here is completely gone," said board certified physician assistant David Cope, pulling up his sleeve and pointing at part of his tribal arm band.  Cope said he got his own tattoo when he was in a medical program as part of a pact to finish. Now, years later, he was encouraged by patients to remove the tattoo to understand the procedure better, so he agreed. "This is kind of an ink explosion kind of feeling in your skin, so it's not just something you've felt before," said Cope.Now, on his second session, parts of the tattoo have completely disappeared and others have started to fade. Getting a tattoo removed by their PiQo laser requires short sessions, a month or so apart, five to 12 times over. Laser tattoo removal clients are 70 percent female, according to recent studies. A Harris Poll of U.S. adults surveyed online in 2015 showed 47 percent of millennials and 36 percent of Gen Xers have at least one, and they're exponentially more likely than their elders to have multiple.  Tattoo removal clinics have grown by 400 percent in the last decade.Click here for FDA suggestions regarding health and safety regarding tattoo removal.ReversaTatt says the laser they use does not cause blistering or scarring like previous methods. When cruise lines begin sailing again, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has some guidance. The health agency issued their “framework for resuming safe and responsible cruise ship” operations Friday, ahead of the no-sail order expiring Saturday.The no-sail order, which originally began in April, prohibits cruise ships from carrying 250 passengers in waters subject to US jurisdiction.The CDC said it has identified at least 3,689 coronavirus-related illnesses, and 41 associated deaths, connected to cruise ships. Although the CDC cautions these figures are likely an underestimate.The framework urges a phased approach, and applies to ships that have the capacity to carry at least 250 passengers in waters subject to U.S. jurisdiction.“A phased approach is necessary because of the continued spread of the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide, risk of resurgence in countries that have suppressed transmission, ongoing concerns related to restarting of cruising internationally, and need for additional time for the cruise industry to test the effectiveness of measures to control potential COVID-19 transmission on board cruise ships with passengers without burdening public health,” a statement from the CDC reads.During the beginning, cruise line operators will have to demonstrate adherence to testing, quarantine and isolation plans, as well as social distancing requirements for passengers and crew members.The CDC says they will help by “establishing a laboratory team dedicated to cruise ships to provide information and oversight of COVID-19 testing,” updating instructions and creating a system to track ship status and passenger cases.Meanwhile, cruise lines will need to build out the capacity and ability to test crew and passengers on a regular basis.In their framework, the CDC says there may be simulated, or mock, voyages with volunteers to test cruise ship operators’ ability to apply COVID-19 mitigation measures.Although the no-sail order will be lifted, Carnival, Royal Caribbean and other cruise lines have already cancelled sailings until 2021. 2083

When it comes to the classroom, it's not unusual for teachers to have assistants. But those helpers aren't always people. At one school, students are learning in a completely new way.We all know it can be fun to play with a dog. But by helping Buster get through an obstacle course, Buster's also helping elementary school student Mason Gentry in ways he hadn't planned."Definitely with focus," Gentry said. "Because sometimes I just have a hard time focusing."But how?"Because I have to help focus on what Buster is doing in order to do what I need to do with him," Gentry said.Buster is teaching schoolmates Ashton Huffman and Grant Meurer, something else."Patience," Huffman said.And it goes beyond getting Buster through the course."It teaches us that if you were to ask for something you can't just go now now I want it now," Meurer said.Once a week dogs like Buster and Mojo, come to Van Arsdale Elementary School in Colorado to work with students.They lead them through courses they've planned out using commands, which helps them develop their communication and confidence."They will get more confident each week," said Vivan Mulhern, coordinator at HABIC Denver. "They will say it louder and then you just see their skills improving and wanting to learn more so then they can connect science together and they can do things like that."Teacher Denise Gillette started the program after seeing how it impacted a student with autism."Were you surprised after that initial student had such a positive reaction from working with the dog?" Kumasi Aaron, a national reporter with The E.W. Scripps Co., asked."Yeah, I think I was surprised," Gillette said. "It was just so beneficial, just such growth."Now more students are seeing that growth, learning a variety of skills that can be challenging to teach, like patience, confidence and focus."They can work on something through the dog that you wouldn't really want to address directly with them," Gillette said. "Like I think if you put the spotlight on them and say you need to have impulse control then you get a resistance but when it's over we need to teach the dog this and then they see, 'Oh that's a valuable thing.'"Gillette writes personalized books to complement her student's work with the dogs, weaving in the lessons each one is trying to learn."Nobody wants to be told you need this you need that," Gillette said. "But when you're helping the dog get it's like, 'Oh okay now you're the helper and you're not always the student who has a problem.'"So while Coen Stevenson has taught Mojo some pretty cool tricks, Mojo's made it easier for him to learn."It makes me feel better to like do more stuff in class and like work better," Stevenson said.A change in curriculum, adding man's best friend, and much more. 2810
