She was a beautiful humanBerta’s gruff exterior was an invention of the writers. Chatty’s warmth and vulnerability were her real strengths. I’m crying for the woman I’ll miss, and the joy she brought so many. https://t.co/SucL6gFaAR— Jon Cryer (@MrJonCryer) October 13, 2020 288

Some of President Trump's strictest anti-immigration policies, such as the Muslim travel ban and zero-tolerance policy that resulted in family separations at the southern border, have come from the mind of senior advisor Stephen Miller. But in an op-ed in Politico Magazine, one of Miller's family members is calling his policies hypocritical.David S. Glosser, Miller's uncle, says that Miller's maternal family was able to immigrate to the United States from what is now Belarus thanks to chain migration — a policy which the Trump administration has been trying to eliminate. In his op-ed, Glosser says he is the brother of Miller's mother. He claims that Wolf-Leib Glosser came to Ellis Island in January 1903. His brother, Nathan Glosser, arrived shortly after, thanks to chain migration — a policy which allows immigrants to petition for green cards for immediate family members.Glosser did not hold back in his criticism for his nephew's proposed policies. 973

SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - A concert at the Belly Up Tavern this Saturday will raise money for a program dedicated to kids with special needs.Banding Together will hold their 7th annual fundraiser from 12-4 pm on February 24th. The concert features three local bands, and one special, surprise guest artist. The bands are Dr. Seahorse, the Grinnell Trio and Jungle Poppins. But the real stars will be the kids and young adults from the program, some of whom will perform with the bands on stage."It's thrilling for them," says Banding Together Co-Founder and Director Angela Meier. "They hear that people like the Rolling Stones have performed a show there and now they get to as well!"The program uses music therapy to help people with special needs come out of their shell. Meier says it's inspiring and amazing to see how they progress."I've had students who have difficulty putting sentences together," says Meier. "And using rhythm and music, all of the sudden they're able to sing whole sentences."In addition to individual and small group classes, Banding Together runs 42 "Jam Sessions" throughout the year, where the students and musicians join together to make music."It's not just that it's making them feel good, but it's giving them self-esteem," says Meier. "It gives them social skills and prepares them to go out into the community and give back."The concert is open to the public and will also feature live auctions, silent auctions and other fundraisers. All the money goes to fund scholarships and to pay for the jam sessions. Over the previous six years, this event has helped the group give out 134 scholarships totaling ,000.Tickets are and are available at the door, or here. 1714

SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - Despite Governor Gavin Newsom's orders, students at a private school in Spring Valley are scheduled to return to class in a few weeks. When Heartland Christian Homeschool Center begins its school year on Sept. 1, it will include in-school learning. Classified as a private school, the pre-kindergarten-to-12th grade school combines homeschooling with several days of in-person instruction every week. The plans come despite the governor’s orders banning in-school classes for counties still on the watch list. Right now, San Diego County remains on that list.Principal Lynda Hansen told ABC 10news, it's "important" for kids to be back in class, adding her school is "following all CDC guidelines."The state is allowing elementary schools to apply for waivers to the COVID-19 orders. Hansen says she'll apply for the waiver, but it likely won't affect her decision to open. The school’s COVID-19 section does list its precautions, including stepped-up disinfecting, encouraging social distancing, and masks for staff when close to students. Masks will not be mandatory for students. The mask issue is a point of concern for students at another private school with similar plans. Last week, ABC 10News reported on Foothills Christian Middle School in El Cajon.A letter sent to parents spelled out reopening plans in September, including masks being optional. That led to frustration for parents who emailed ABC 10News. The school cited a lack of evidence that masks prevent COVID-19 transmission in children.A county spokesperson says the have several tools for private schools out of compliance, beginning with education and on-site visits. Other options citations, cease-and-desist orders, and closure orders.Heartland Christian Homeschool Center issued the following statement: "Heartland Christian Homeschool Center Inc. is fully committed to complying with every lawful requirement of federal, state, and local government. Also, Heartland is an alternative educational choice. It is our aim to provide support, enrichment, and records for homeschooling families. Unlike traditional schools, our students are not on campus full-time. Our expectation is that San Diego County will be off the Governor's watch list by the fall. We are planning accordingly, following the CDC guidelines for schools. Our parents have been overwhelmingly supportive ..." 2387
