(AP) — A Florida sheriff says he will deputize every gun owner in his county to put down any violent protests his deputies can’t handle alone.Clay County Sheriff Darryl Daniels gave no indication in a three-minute video released Wednesday that any demonstrations are planned in his suburban Jacksonville county.Daniels also said he would protect any peaceful protests, but added that if anyone starts “tearing up Clay County, that is not going to be acceptable.”“If we can’t handle you, I’ll exercise the power and authority as the sheriff and I’ll make special deputies of every lawful gun owner in the county and I’ll deputize them to this one purpose: to stand in the gap between lawlessness and civility,” said Daniels, sporting a white cowboy hat as he stood in front of 18 deputies.Daniels, who is African American, said in the video that his department has a “great relationship” with its residents, but “if you come to Clay County and think for one second we’ll bend our backs for you, you’re sadly mistaken.”“The second you step out from up under the protection of the Constitution, we’ll be waiting on you and give you everything you want: all the publicity, all the pain, all the glamour and glory for all that five minutes will give you.”Daniels, a Republican finishing his first term, is being challenged by six opponents in the upcoming election. He is under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement after his former employer, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, announced last year that he’d had an affair with a co-worker when he was running its jails. Horseshoe crabs are prehistoric creatures that predate the dinosaurs, but pharmaceutical companies depend on them to this day for their unique blue blood.The crabs’ blood is hypersensitive to endotoxins, making it the perfect testing ground to see if a coronavirus vaccine is harmful to people."The fact that we rely so much on these really primitive creatures that predate the dinosaurs," said Barbara Brummer, the state director of The Nature Conservancy in New Jersey.From Massachusetts to South Carolina, the crabs are collected and taken to laboratories. But one of their largest breeding grounds is right in New Jersey, in the Delaware Bay."The concern is the population of horseshoe crabs in the Delaware Bay has been declining over the years," said Brummer. "They are needed for the ecological value they bring for shorebirds.”Shorebirds rely on the crabs' millions of eggs for food.New Jersey fishermen are banned from using the crabs for bait. But pharmaceutical companies remove about a half-million horseshoe crabs from the ocean every year.In the labs, about one-third of a crab's blood is removed for testing. If the crab's blue blood clots up, the medicine is no good.The crabs are then returned to the ocean.However, a study by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission estimates about 15% of the crabs do not survive."There is an alternative test," Brummer said. "They have created a test that does not involve the bleeding of the crabs. (KGTV) - Gardena Police are thanking the UPS workers and customers who stopped a robbery in progress outside a UPS Store.Two men approached the victim as he walked outside the store September 7.  Police said the men knocked the victim with a ground, struck him with a crowbar, and tried to take his property.Police credit UPS employees and customers for scaring off the robbers.The victim was not seriously hurt.The attackers, who drove away in a white van, have not been caught. 508
