SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two years after Lime scooters hit the pavement, the company has reached a milestone - surpassing 100 million rides globally. The company is thanking its riders who span across more than 120 cities, 30 countries, and five continents.A San Diego chef is one of those riders; in fact, he too reached a personal milestone. "My name is Justin Vaiciunas, and I am San Diego's #1 Lime rider!"A Lime representative called Vaiciunas last week to tell him about the accomplishment; Vaiciunas clocked in nearly 600 rides this year."I live right over off of Pacific Highway, and I scooter from there to work every day and back, and then also all around; even to Balboa Park, North Park, everywhere I can," said Vaiciunas. Vaiciunas likes how accessible and easy the scooters make it getting around downtown. He now uses them for 80 percent of his commutes. "I used to spend about in gas a week; now I maybe spend that a month."The company says with the growth they've increased education outreach as well as efforts to be good stewards in the cities they serve. As for Vaiciunes, his next goal is being the country's #1 Lime rider.Last month Lime's future in San Diego was called into question when the City claimed the company violated geo-fencing rules. The city then began the process to revoke Lime's permit.But a Lime spokesperson says the company looks forward to an upcoming hearing to make its case. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- While the visible reminders of local wildfires may be gone, San Diego fire officials say what’s left over can still cause a lot of problems especially as the region expects to get rain this weekend.After an intense wildfire happens, the burned vegetation and charred soil forms a water repellant layer that blocks water absorption -- which means the next time it rains, there’s potential for flooding.Cal Fire wants to remind residents to prepare before the rain arrives.Thomas Shoots, a spokesperson for Cal Fire, said, “Anyone near the Valley Fire needs to be prepared for any type of debris or mud flows. They need to have sandbags and the area around their home prepped so that everything looks OK.”In September, the county gave residents free supplies to make sandbags so people could begin their preps for the rainy season.County information on free sandbag availability can be found here.The City of San Diego is also offering sandbags for residents. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- When the March of Dimes was founded in the 1930's, the mission was to fight polio, now the focus is to help all women and babies get the healthcare they need.But there are still plenty of obstacles, especially for women of color.Like Winter, who lost a premature baby, "What can we do to bridge the gap to make sure that African-American women have a great chance to experience birth?"According to March of Dimes black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy related causes than white women. The organization also reports that black babies are twice as likely to die before their first birthday.In San Diego, the inequities also apply to immigrant communities and those who don't speak English.March of Dimes' job is to reach those under served groups.Marta Bills, with March of Dimes San Diego says there are all sorts of ways the organization is trying to promote equality, including increased funding, providing scientific research and even training healthcare providers to tackle bias."To just ensure that they are providing the most respectful and unbiased care they possibly can," Bills said.March of Dimes is also expanding a program that promotes group prenatal care.It was impacted when Covid hit, but local clinics are figuring out ways to start back up again safely.Bills says the groups give women who participate more time with their doctors but also lead to better outcomes overall because patients tend to show up to their appointments more often. 1506

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three San Diego Dreamers are flying to Washington D.C. to meet with congressional members, attend rallies and continue to advocate for our border communities. “March 5 is a very significant date for us," Dulce Garcia said. "The president gave congress six months to come up with a permanent fix for this DACA crisis, and it didn’t happen. So we want to make sure we’re in D.C. when March 5 comes.”“Absolutely, yes I’m nervous," Francisco Peralta said. "This is the first time actually being in D.C. ever and also it’s the first time that I’m going to be sitting in a room where, you know, with members of congress.”Ali Torabi will also be going. He started a GoFundMe to help raise money for their trip, as well as helped organize an art show. The three Dreamers will leave Saturday, March 3 and return Wednesday, March 7.   892

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Video shows a brutal fight outside a Pacific Beach bar and restaurant that sent a bouncer to the hospital with critical injuries. The assault happened at about 9:20 p.m. at the Firehouse, 722 Grand Ave., according to San Diego Police. Four men tried to get into the restaurant through a side entrance but the main bouncer told them to use the main door, officers said. One of the men picked up a metal crowd barrier stanchion pole and struck the bouncer over the head, said police. The bouncer suffered a skull fracture and brain bleed. Officers said he is currently in critical but stable condition in the hospital. After the pole strike, the three other men in the group began fighting with security staff members. One of the bouncers suffered a broken nose and the other two had bumps and bruises, police said. The man responsible for the pole attack is described as African-American, in his 30s, 6’0” tall, 250 pounds with a muscular build. He was wearing a white t-shirt and jeans.
