SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Drug maker Moderna announced it had started the process of testing its COVID-19 vaccine on children ages 12 to 17. The company dosed the first adolescents Thursday.“I think all of us are interested in getting control of this pandemic, and I think one of the opportunities here is to be able to immunize children also,” said Dr. Stephen Spector. He leads Moderna’s Phase 3 clinical trial on adults at UC San Diego. “We’re interested in participating; we haven’t heard yet from the sponsor.”Spector is also a pediatrician and said generally, children tolerate viral vaccines better than adults. This study will answer many important questions.“Are there possible adverse effects in children that weren’t seen in adults, and will they be more severe?” he said.“The primary concerns now are whether or not the vaccine will be safe in children, and whether it will provide the same immune response in children as was seen in adults.”Spector said once those factors have been determined, the vaccine can likely be approved to be used on children.“Because we already know the vaccine works in adults, given the immune response will be a determinant of vaccine efficacy, you see that in children, then the vaccine can be approved for them as well,” he explained.Data released by Moderna showed the vaccine efficacy against COVID-19 was 94 percent in adult participants, and the company has requested emergency use authorization from the FDA.“I’m not going to minimize that there have been some side effects, but they’re usually short-lasting, maybe a day or two of three days at most,” he said. “The fact that the vaccine is over 90 percent effective really puts it in the same realm as measles, rubella, and other kinds of vaccines that have been tremendously successful in containing viral infections.”Moderna will split the participants into two separate groups, half getting the placebo and the other half getting two vaccine shots 28 days apart.The company hopes to enroll 3,000 young people in the study, with a goal of generating data in the spring of 2021 and potentially vaccinating kids shortly after, in time for the next school year.“At this point, there are convincing data that the vaccine works, the FDA will review that data next week, and the expectation is there will be an emergency use approval by the end of next week for the vaccine,” said Spector. 2389

The company has boosted pay and bonuses, raising e-commerce employee wages by an hour as online orders surge. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dog owners who live in Normal Heights are worried about the future of the off-leash dog park at Ward Canyon.Earlier this month, signs appeared saying the large-dog area would be closed through the end of March 2020. People who use the park say it's because a few neighbors complained about the noise to the local Advisory Committee.Because the large-dog area is closed, all sizes of dogs have been sharing the small-dog area next to it."It's really crowded," says dog owner Christina Ardon. "When people get off work, everyone's over here. It's a little bit of a madhouse.""It's intimidating to smaller dogs," says Jason Douglas-Hiley. "They won't come into the park because they're afraid of the large dogs harassing the smaller dogs."Meanwhile, the City of San Diego has plans to renovate the entire park. Renderings show the area where the large-dog park currently sits would be turned into a community garden. The small-dog park would be expanded.But, City Councilmember Chris Ward's office says there is no funding for that project, and no timetable for when it could be added to the budget.People who use the park say they're afraid it will disappear while the project sits in limbo."To have to wait 2-5 years for them to construct a new park is a lifetime for a dog," says Douglas-Hiley.Park supporters have started a petition, asking the city to safeguard the small-dog area and also fence off a different portion of Ward Canyon for large dogs to use. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — High school athletes across San Diego County are waiting to find out if they’ll have a season this fall.The decision from California Interscholastic Federation is expected to come by July 20.In the meantime, some school districts, like Sweetwater Union High School District, have canceled summer workouts out of concern about the pandemic. Others, like Poway Unified and Grossmont Union, are allowing them with social distancing measures and new liability waivers specific to COVID-19.The CIF does not oversee summer practices, said San Diego Section President Joe Heinz, meaning it’s up to districts to decide whether to allow activities on their athletics fields and how to safely manage them.RELATED: CIAA, SIAC suspend fall sports, championship events due to COVID-19PUSD began allowing summer workouts for football, soccer, field hockey, and other sports in mid-June, after the district created its own set of safety measures from county, state, and other guidelines."We feel pretty comfortable about what it is that we’re doing," said Rancho Bernardo Athletic Director Peggy Brose. "So far so good."Teams have staggered practice times and specific entry points to avoid crossover, she said.Upon arrival to campus, staff check each athlete’s temperature and screen them for symptoms. Each athlete must bring hand sanitizer and their own water bottle. Probably not,” said the parent. “But they’re going to go back and continue to spread it to their parents and grandparents who are at greater risk.”That risk has prompted other districts, like the Sweetwater Union High School District, to ban summer practices entirely.“We continue to be very concerned about the increases of cases in our communities, at a rate significantly higher than in other communities within the county,” Chief Compliance Officer Vernon Moore wrote in a letter to parents.Citing updated guidance from the state, Orange County banned all youth sports practices as of this week, but for now, San Diego County says it will allow them.“I think it can’t do enough for their mental health, their self-esteem,” said Coach Anderson. “Being cooped up in their houses for the last few months, to get out, run around and be active is really beneficial to their mind and body.” 4659
