Black Lives Matter activists are holding their first Black National Convention Friday, a virtual event that will adopt a political agenda calling for slavery reparations, universal basic income, environmental justice and legislation that entirely re-imagines criminal justice reform.The gathering follows Democratic and Republican party conventions that laid out starkly different visions for America. It also comes on the heels of yet another shooting by a white police officer of a Black man — 29-year-old Jacob Blake — in Kenosha, Wisconsin, that sparked days of protests, unrest and violence.And it comes on the same day as a commemoration of the 1963 March on Washington, where the families of an ever-growing list of police and vigilante violence victims will appear with civil rights leaders.Friday’s live-stream broadcast will include policy proposals on such issues as voter suppression, reproductive rights, inequality in public education, housing insecurity and inter-communal violence, according to its agenda, shared exclusively with The Associated Press.“These are absolutely public policies that the Democratic Party, state and local officials, or anyone who is looking to serve Black people can take up now,” said Jessica Byrd, who leads the Electoral Justice Project of the Movement for Black Lives, a coalition of more than 150 Black groups organizing the event.In 2016, the coalition released its “Vision for Black Lives” policy platform which included early proposals for defunding police. The new agenda revamps much of that original platform with specific proposals that could lead to an eventual abolition of the criminal justice system as it exists today.It takes on the pledge Wednesday by Vice President Mike Pence at the Republican National Convention, who defended police and called for an end to unrest in cities where arson, looting and violence have followed peaceful protests over police brutality.“Under President Trump, we will always stand with those who stand on the thin blue line,” Pence declared. “And we’re not going to defund the police. Not now, not ever.”Similar to the Democratic and Republican conventions, much of Friday’s Black Lives gathering will feature pre-taped conversations, performances and other presentations, including 28 mini- documentaries on the issues and addresses by Black organizers in California, Minnesota, Kentucky and Wisconsin.Earlier this week, yet another flashpoint put police brutality in the national spotlight: The police shooting Sunday in Kenosha that left Blake paralyzed, according to his lawyers. Beginning in 2024, there will be new standards for nominees of the coveted Best Picture Academy Award. The changes are meant to encourage equitable representation and “better reflect the diversity of the movie-going audience,” according to the Academy.In order for a film to qualify to be a Best Picture nominee, they must meet two of four new representation and inclusion standards. It’s part of Academy Aperture 2025, an initiative by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that sets specific inclusion goals for the organization and the films it recognizes.Movies wishing to be considered for Best Picture in 2022 and 2023 will need to submit a form attesting to their inclusion and representation practices, however meeting the specific Academy standards will not be required until the 96th Oscars in 2024.The standards include having at least 30 percent of all actors on-screen from at least two underrepresented groups, having a storyline or theme that centers on underrepresented group(s); as well as efforts behind the camera like having representation from underrepresented groups in creative leadership and department head positions, overall crew composition, and paid internship and apprenticeship opportunities for underrepresented groups.“The aperture must widen to reflect our diverse global population in both the creation of motion pictures and in the audiences who connect with them,” said Academy President David Rubin and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson. “We believe these inclusion standards will be a catalyst for long-lasting, essential change in our industry.”Another change fans will notice in 2021, the Best Picture category will be limited to ten nominees, rather than a fluctuating number year-to-year.Here is the full list of standards from the Academy. I want you to know exactly where we are with our discussions with the Big 3 leadership and protecting our members and their facilities during this international crisis.I announced this past Sunday that the International UAW had formed a COVID-19/Coronavirus task force with GM, Ford and FCA to implement enhanced protections for manufacturing and warehouse employees at all three companies.I want to be very transparent about what happened during our conversation Sunday with the Big 3. The UAW leadership, based on the World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations on how to protect ourselves and our communities, requested a two-week shutdown of operations to safeguard our members, our families and our communities. Your UAW leadership feels very strongly, and argued very strongly, that this is the most responsible course of action.The companies, however, were not willing to implement this request. They asked for 48 hours to put together plans to safeguard workers in their facilities. (Ford Motor Company has indicated this week that they are willing to rotate down shifts and are planning to shut down all European operations next week.)The 48-hour window is up this afternoon. We will be evaluating what the companies submit today and there will be a meeting this evening at 6 p.m., where the Task Force will review plans for the safety and health of all members, their families and our communities.I want to be very clear here: If the UAW leadership on the task force, myself and Vice Presidents Cindy Estrada, Terry Dittes and Gerald Kariem, are not satisfied that our members will be protected, we will take this conversation to the next level.These companies will be put on notice that the UAW will use any and all measures to protect our brothers and sisters who are working in their facilities. And make no mistake, we have powerful allies who have stepped up to help us. Both houses of Congress passed a nearly 5,600-page bill late Monday night; the COVID relief package was combined with a massive .4 trillion government spending bill to keep federal agencies funded for the next fiscal year and set government priorities.The relief package contains stimulus checks up to 0 for individuals, help for small businesses and for renters. But the bill overall also contains funding for two Smithsonian museums, a statement on the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama and extending tax breaks for NASCAR racing in addition to other government priorities.Here are a few programs listed in the bill:Climate: Several smaller bills having to do with climate change and renewable energy were wrapped in the government spending bill and relief package. Including: cutting the use of hydrofluorocarbons used in air conditioners and refrigerators, new research and development programs for solar, wind and energy storage, funding for energy efficiency projects, upgrades to the electric grid and commitment to researching removing carbon from the atmosphere, according to the Washington Post.Around million is being made available for the Secretary of Agriculture to conduct a pilot program giving financial assistance to “rural communities to further develop renewable energy.”Overall, Congress is sending a message that America should make renewable energies a priority.“It is the sense of Congress that in order to reduce emissions and meet 100 percent of the power demand in the United States through clean, renewable, or zero emission energy sources while maintaining United States leadership in science and technology, the Secretary of Energy must prioritize funding for critical fundamental research infrastructure and for basic research and development activities carried out through the Office of Science,” the bill states.Flexible Spending Accounts: The bill will allow parents to carry over any unused childcare and healthcare funds they had in a flexible spending account into next year. Money put into an FSA typically has to be spent that year, but with daycare facilities closed due to the pandemic and many health care visits postponed, this money went unspent for some people.Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act: The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority will be able to come up with and implement horse and racetrack safety standards at a national level, according to FOX News. This would include things like barring horses involved in racing from receiving pain killers. Measures from the authority would be overseen by the Federal Trade Commission and enforced by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency."Among the required elements of the horseracing safety program are sets of training and racing safety standards consistent with the humane treatment of horses, a system to maintain track surface quality, programs for injury and fatality analysis, investigation and disciplinary procedures, and an evaluation and accreditation program," the bill says.NASCAR: Tax breaks for auto-racing tracks, like those used for NASCAR, were set to expire at the end of the year. The bill will extend them.Pakistan: At least million is being set aside for programs in Pakistan, broken down as “not less than ,000,000 shall be made available for democracy programs and not less than ,000,000 shall be made available for gender programs.” Although there are not a lot of details in the bill itself, gender equality is a component for development of Pakistan, according to the United Nations Population Fund.Smithsonian museums: The government bill sets aside funding for two new Smithsonian museums; American Women’s History Museum and National Museum of the American Latino.“A comprehensive women’s history museum would document the full spectrum of the experiences of women in the United States, represent a diverse range of viewpoints, experiences, and backgrounds, more accurately depict the history of the United States, and add value to the Smithsonian Institution,” the bill states in establishing the new Women’s History Museum.The National Museum of the American Latino will help visitors “to learn about Latino contributions to life, art, history, and culture in the United States.”Tibet and the Dalai Lama: The bill sets out the objectives of the special coordinator for Tibetan issues, to “promote substantive dialogue without preconditions, between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Dalai Lama … that leads to a negotiated agreement on Tibet.” Also to coordinate with other countries to this end, and to promote the human rights of the Tibetan people.It also states this representative of the U.S. should ensure that the identification and installation of any future Dalai Lama be determined by the Tibetan Buddhist faith community. There has been controversy recently because China has inserted itself in the selection process over who the next leader of the Buddhist faith should be. In 2019, China said the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama must “comply with Chinese laws and regulations.”The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, issued a statement in 2011 explaining the traditions of the selection of Dalai Lamas, including reincarnation.Many members of Congress expressed concern at the lack of time given to read the massive bill before voting on it.
