Police are warning about a terrifying phone scam where the person on the other end of the phone says they are holding a family member for ransom. One woman said she received one of these calls and it was the most frightening call she ever received.Natalie Bruser was heading home from work when her cellphone rang from a number she did not recognize."I answered, and it sounded like one of my kids crying, and I couldn't figure out who it was," said Bruser, who has three children. "They were crying super hard, and so I was hysterical."The sobbing young woman said she had been kidnapped. Bruser thought it sounded most like her daughter Nicole, who is in her 20s."It seems that a black Suburban pulled up, and people got out with guns," she said. "And Nicole started screaming."A man then got on the phone and said if Bruser wanted to see her daughter again, she needed to drive over at a gas station off Interstate 75 in Springboro, and get money from an ATM.The man said police were on their tail, and then he told Bruser to stay on the phone and not call 9-1-1. The man also said Bruser needed to act quickly or they would harm her daughter, who appeared to be still crying in the background."She was crying heavily," Bruser said. "And I said, 'Nicole, please calm down. I need to hear your voice. I need to really hear that you're OK.'"But it was all a scam.Luckily, Bruser was able to yell for help, and someone nearby called the police. Officers quickly sorted the situation out.It turned out that there was no black SUV with armed men inside, there was no police car in pursuit, and as for Bruser's daughter Nicole, she was home resting."I'm freaking out at this point. I don't know if they have her hostage or not," Bruser said. "So Springboro police actually went and banged on her door, and she was sleeping, and so here she was safe at home."How the scam worksIt's called the "virtual kidnapping scam."According to police, the caller is not local and does not even know your son or daughter's name. But panicked parents will grab hundreds of dollars, then run to the nearest Western Union desk to wire money for the release of their child.Reports from around the country say this is a very effective scam. The scammers usually tell their victims to stay on the phone and not let anyone know what is going on or they will harm their child. As for the black Chevy Suburban filled with kidnappers carrying guns, the scammers have seen action movies where this is a common trope. In a moment of panic however, it's easy to miss all the holes in the caller's story. So be suspicious of any strange phone calls that appear to be from a family member in distress. Make sure it is really your child."It can happen to anybody and it was so real," Bruser said. This is similar to the long-running grandparent scam, where someone calls and says, "Grandma, Grandpa, I got arrested and I need help."Before you do anything, call police, call a friend or call home.Chances are they are safe, and that way, you don't waste your money.___________________________Don't Waste Your Money" is a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc. Peas and Carrot will both likely be spared of the fate of becoming a Thanksgiving meal by President Trump — but only one will be named "National Thanksgiving Turkey."On Monday, the two South Dakota-grown turkeys have introduced at the Intercontinental Hotel in Washington, D.C.After meeting the President on Tuesday, Peas and Carrot will "retire" to Virginia Tech, where they'll join last year's pardoned turkeys — Drumstick and Wshbone.Last year, the Drumstick beat out Wishbone as the nation's Thanksgiving Turkey, beating out his buddy, Wishbone. President Trump later pardoned both turkeys, which now live in a farm at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.Click here to vote for which turkey you'd like to see be named the "National Thanksgiving Turkey" of the year.    802

PHOENIX, Arizona — A Phoenix-based American Airlines flight attendant was sentenced to five years of probation for taking videos of men and boys using public restrooms. Special Agents with ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) say that on December 30, 2017, they detained Gordon Harold Nobriga, 50, as he was trying to leave the country through El Paso, Texas. Officials searched Nobriga's cell phone and found "numerous videos of men and boys using a public restroom." Investigators say the videos appeared they were produced through a 'peephole' in a bathroom stall. When questioned about the videos, Nobriga reportedly told HSI that the videos were produced in a store, but he refused to give the store's location. Since Nobriga is from Phoenix, the phone was sent to the Homeland Security Office in Phoenix where investigators were able to determine that the videos came from a Walmart store in Phoenix. They say surveillance video from the store shows Nobriga entering the bathroom several times over a two-month period and spending hours in the bathroom each time he went in. Investigators were able to identify two victims, a man, and a 14-year-old boy, both who do not know Nobriga. Nobriga was arrested on May 25 at Sky Harbor Airport as he exited a flight. On August 16 of this year, Nobriga pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted voyeurism and was sentenced to five years of supervised probation. Nobriga said he's been a flight attendant with American Airlines for sixteen years. Nobriga allegedly admitted to taking the videos, but he denies any distribution of them. He's was initially charged with 11 counts of voyeurism. American Airlines sent this statement at the time of Nobriga’s arrest: “We take this matter very seriously and have been cooperating with law enforcement throughout their investigation. Since this case is a pending criminal matter, we must refer all questions to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Phoenix.” 2070

Parents deported from the US while their children were left behind is what experts think has happened to hundreds of families.A court-appointed steering committee began trying to reach the families of more than 1,000 migrant children two years ago. That's after a federal court ordered the reunification of many families that had been separated at the border under the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy in 2018.According to a court filing Tuesday, the committee has been unable to reach the parents of 545 children. It believes most of them were deported without their children, and those children are still in the US with a sponsor. The Justice Department and the American Civil Liberties Union are leading the effort to locate the parents. The ACLU points out some of the children were babies when they were taken away from their families. 858

Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 2-year-old girl at a hotel in Wickliffe, Ohio on Friday night. The shooting happened around 11 p.m. at the Econo Lodge Wickliffe-Cleveland East, 28611 Euclid Ave. Police said it appears the child's mother was handling a gun when it went off and the 2-year-old girl was shot in the chest. The mother initially told the 911 operator the gun's safety was off, but a few seconds later said the safety was on when she dropped the weapon."The safety was on when I dropped the gun and the bullet shot her. The gun dropped, I dropped my gun," the mother told the 911 operator. "She's gone. My baby's gone. She's not breathing at all. She's gone."The child was taken to a nearby hospital but later died from the injury, according to authorities.Police said the shooting appears to be accidental. The mother had the weapon legally and had a concealed carry permit. It will be left up to the Lake County Crime Lab and the prosecutor's office to determine if any charges are filed, police said. 1062
