BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- China will "vigorously" expand its imports of key products as the nation strives to cut its trade surplus amid growing protectionism against the world's largest exporter, a senior Chinese trade official said on Monday."We will especially encourage imports of products the nation is short of, especially advanced technology and key equipment," said Chong Quan, China's deputy international trade representative.Special attention will be paid to expanding imports from countries that China has a trade surplus with, he said at the China Import Forum organized by the Ministry of Commerce.Due to their domestic economic woes and political pressure, some developed countries, in particular the US, have accused China of piling up trade surpluses through policies such as an undervalued currency. BEIJING, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) - Chinese police freed 10,621 women and 5,896 children who had been abducted for human trafficking as of September 6,since the Ministry of Public Security launched a crackdown on trafficking the crime in April last year.In the campaign, police nationwide apprehended 2,398 human trafficking gangs and handled 13,500 such cases, said the ministry in a statement on Sunday.Further, the police put 15,673 suspects under criminal detention and handed out administrative penalties on 1,518 people, it said.In addition to the tough crackdown, the police have stepped up measures to return the children who have been trafficked to their biological parents, including building a database that collects the DNA of those children who may have fallen victims to human trafficking and their parents.The database had helped 813 children to find their biological parentsthrough DNA matching.

YICHANG, Hubei, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- The water level at the Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest water control project, reached 164.59 meters on Sunday, only 10 meters short of its full capacity of 175-meters, said a project official.The dam in central China started to hold back water this September by discharging less to the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the country's longest river.Reaching the 175-meter water level would enable the Three Gorges Dam to fulfill its functions of flood control and generating electricity to the fullest extent, symbolizing the total success of the massive water project.This is the reservoir's third attempt to reach full capacity since 2008. However, water levels stopped at 172.8 meters in 2008 and 171.43 meters in 2009 due to droughts on the lower reaches.However, this time officials believe the dam will reach full capacity by the end of October."We have confidence in reaching the goal this year. Although less water flowed into the dam after the flood season, we have reduced water discharges accordingly," said Yuan Jie, an official in charge of water level control.
