We're continuing our weekly look at fun around town with safety in mind.Here are four options for this weekend:Visit Old Town San Diego: While many of Old Town's smaller museums and shops remain closed, areas like the state park, Bazaar del Mundo, and nearby eateries are open for visitors. Businesses that have reopened are abiding by distancing, so guests can feel safe shopping in stores. The state park is also a great area to get some fresh air and distance. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s almost time to welcome back the nail-biting excitement of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.This year’s countywide bee will be held on March 15 at the McMillin Companies Event Center at Liberty Station.Roughly 100 spellers are expected to take the stage, making competition fierce.Last year was an exciting year for the competition as it saw its youngest speller ever, Edith Fuller of Oklahoma, who was only 5-years-old when she qualified.Fuller went all the way to the national stage. The spelling bee has been around for more than nine decades.The bee was founded in 1925 and has been held every year since, except during the World War II years of 1943, 1944 and 1945.In 2017, the competition celebrated its 90th National Spelling Bee.2017’s winning word was marocain, which is “a ribbed crepe fabric used in women's clothing.”The Scripps National Spelling Bee will begin May 29 and end on May 31.  943

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Locals will no longer have to rely on trips to Harrah's Resort or Downtown Disney to satisfy their Earl of Sandwich fix.The sandwich shop's downtown San Diego spot, the county's first, is now open for hungry locals but will hold its grand opening Saturday, according to the shop. The new sandwich shop can be found at 690 1st Ave.A cult following has developed behind Earl of Sandwich, with its popular sandwiches like The Full Montagu (roast beef and turkey), The Original 1762 (roast beef and cheddar), and Holiday Turkey (turkey, cranberry sauce, and stuffing) sandwiches.RELATED: Michelin identifies several San Diego restaurants as 'hidden gems'The restaurant chain is named after John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In response to growing community outrage over a man who was released on bail a day after being arrested on attempted kidnapping charges, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department has released surveillance video of the incident in hopes of alleviating concern.The incident happened Sunday just before 3 p.m. in the parking lot of Costco Warehouse located at 1755 Hacienda Drive in Vista.A couple and their two small children were backing out of a parking stall when the suspect opened the rear vehicle door. The suspect attempted to remove the 2-year-old child from the car.Adam Glavinic, 37, was arrested for attempted kidnapping and being under the influence of a controlled substance and was booked into the Vista Detention Facility.Outrage ensued following reports that Glavinic was released from jail on a 0,000 bail the next day.WATCH: Growing outrage over attempt kidnapping suspect's release on bail"The Sheriff's Department in partnership with the D.A.'s Office are now releasing the video due to understandable concern from community members," said Lt. Ricardo Lopez, Media Relations Director for the San Diego County Sheriff's Department."It is understandable that anytime an incident involves a child in the vicinity of an event, it can produce fear and anxiety on the part of parents and community. This is why law enforcement prioritizes these cases and focuses on the evidence," said Lopez.The surveillance video the sheriff released Thursday night shows Glavinic walk up the driver's side of the family's white SUV. The SUV begins slowly backing out of the stall, and that is when Glavnic reaches for the rear passenger door handle. 1678

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Images of burning homes, helicopters and flames are now a regular occurrence in California.This summer, that wildfire threat became real for the Del Cerro community.“We could hear the exploding palm trees, we could smell the toxic, frightening smoke," remembers Glenn Thomas, Vice Chair of Friends of Del Cerro.The group wanted to do something to pay back firefighters for all they do for the community. They wanted to know what the department needs to help firefighters do their job better. “We believe you find out what people want and you give it to them!” said Thomas.Friends of Del Cerro teamed up with the San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation to make something happen.What the department needs, Thomas learned, is more wildland firefighting hand tools. While these tools are currently on brush trucks, the department wants them on every engine.“There are so many more vegetation fires, and they grow so much bigger now," said Deputy Chief Steve Wright. “Something we needed that’s going to be a force-multiplier on vegetation fires that we didn’t have the immediate budget for."The group plans to raise ,000 for the tools and is halfway there thanks to a generous donation from the Padres.If you'd like to help, donate here. 1261
