PHOENIX, Arizona — "I would go out by myself, I would hang out with whoever wanted to hang out but my real relationships were all failing," said Stephani Krise.That's because Krise says the only relationship she cared about was the one she had with alcohol.Constant partying after work, binge drinking, stints in the hospital and traditional rehab seemed hopeless."After I relapsed and I couldn't stay sober, I kind of had given up hope," said Krise.Another woman, Sarah Kennedy, says her long addiction to alcohol had affected friendships, her career and of course, her health.And like Krise, Kennedy was willing to try just about anything."Read about it on the web and just seemed too good to be true," said Kennedy.What she read about is the Sinclair method.Her first appointment she met with a doctor, got a prescription, took a pill, and later that day, had a drink, doctors’ orders of course.If the protocol seems like a radical idea, that's because it is."I mean I think it's time to change the way addiction treatment’s been for a long time," said Dr. Michael Yasinski.Dr. Yasinski is spear heading that effort at his Scottsdale office."It's founded in science and data which is why I liked it," said Dr. Yasinski.Every one of his patients gets to continue drinking as long as they take the anti-addiction drug Naltrexone one hour before they knock one back. The pill works to block pleasure sensors in the brain. He says combined with psycho-therapy the cravings go away."It's not seeing or enjoying alcohol like it normally does, so it starts to lose interest over time," said Dr. Yasinski."I came back two weeks later and he said 'how did you do,' and I said well I felt great cause I didn't have to change a thing," said Kennedy.But what did change, was the desire to drink. Both report drinking isn't a problem anymore. This coming as nearly 70 percent of traditional rehab patients relapse within the first year."To me, it’s like there is no relapse, you just keep going and keep improving," said Kennedy."I just feel so much better about myself and that's what makes the difference," said Krise.A true testament to what taking a chance can lead to.So why are we just hearing about this now? Traditionally alcoholism has been treated as a moral issue rather than a medical one.According to those in the treatment industry, most doctors just aren’t trained in this type of treatment. Police in Japan have arrested a 27-year-old man after he admitted to killing an unidentified person and dismembering the body.Japanese media reported parts of as many as nine bodies were found in the apartment of Takahiro Shiraishi in Zama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, southwest of Tokyo.Shiraishi has been arrested on the charge of abandoning a corpse, police told CNN, and investigation is still ongoing. The names, ages and genders of the alleged victims have not been revealed."I killed (a person) and dismembered the body and put them into a cooler box with cat litter in order to hide the evidence," Shiraishi said, according to police.A police officer would not comment on the eight other bodies reportedly found in Shiraishi's apartment.According to Japanese public broadcaster NHK, police searched Shiraishi's home as part of an investigation into the disappearance of a 23-year-old woman from Hachioji City, in the Tokyo suburbs.Investigators told NHK the woman was reported missing last Tuesday after she posted a message online saying she was looking for someone to join her in committing suicide. Surveillance footage showed her walking with the suspect near the man's apartment.When they searched Shiraishi's apartment, police found the dismembered body parts of nine people, hidden around the apartment, NHK reported.Citing police sources, TV Asahi reported three cooler boxes and five containers were found in Shiraishi's room containing human heads and bones with the flesh scraped off.  1515

Pawn shops offer a way for people to get fast cash for loaned items, or for them to shop for items at a discount.When the pandemic hit, pawn shops were deemed essential and stayed open, but the reasons people came in were different than what was expected.“This is how we test diamonds, it’s a diamond tester” Michael Mack, owner of Max Pawn, said while explaining how pawn shops figure out the worth of a ring. “And then we weigh.”This is part of the process at a pawn shop, customers bring an item in and an employee assesses it. They make an offer based on value. If you say yes, you walk out the door with cash. You either keep the money and the shop eventually puts your stuff up for sale, or you bring the money back and reclaim your items.Like all industries, COVID-19 has caused some change.“Business is difficult,” Mack said. “All of these businesses are not able to do business the way they used to, and pawn shops are no different.”However, pawn shops were deemed essential. “We’re a financial institution. We remained open this entire time,” said Andy Zimmerman, CFO at Gold & Silver Pawn Shop.There to provide loans for people in need of fast cash, sometimes to those who don’t have access to a bank.“Unbanked and underbanked, they typically refer to a consumer that finds your typical bank branch not really meet their needs,” said Jonathan Polter, CEO of the app PawnGuru. The app connects customers with pawn shops, without having to go into a store first.“Traditional banks make money off a variety of transactions and because of the financial situation of the unbanked and underbanked consumer, they’re typically not credit-worthy of many of those other products,” Polter said. This was important during the last recession.“When 2008 hit, pawn shops became more prevalent because banks were giving less money to everyone. Before, pawn shops catered to a lower class middle class,” Mack explained. “We had people come in and get a loan on a Ferrari to pay their private school bill.”That’s what shop owners said they expected when the economy took a hit in March.“The anticipation was that the loan balances or the pawns would increase but, in fact, it’s worked the other way, with the federal stimulus, it seems that a lot of the customers typical of a pawn shop have in essence received a raise,” Zimmerman said. Zimmerman works at the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas, a popular shop and tourist destination.“The outflow of goods versus the inflow of goods has been a surprise to everyone in the industry,” he said.Pawn shops can’t even keep certain items in stock, such as electronics, guns, and jewelry.“We were just selling through thousands of ounces of silver,” Zimmerman said. “The stimulus really had an impact on people’s behavior.”“Also bicycles, everyone wanted to ride a bicycle, so bikes are gone,” Mack said. This left many shops with low inventory, and lots of cash.“Right now, I don’t know that the industry has ever seen this before,” Polter explained. “Their industry is dried up and at the same time, they haven’t really had the time to replenish it.”“Pawn shops are not built to sit on cash,” Polter said. “They’re built to put cash into consumers pockets and that’s how they make money.”Mack’s shop is working with customers like many pawn shops are, offering curbside pickup or lowering loan interest rates for a while. “The asset is the customer,” he said.But without more loans coming in and a low inventory of items, pawn shop owners said there could be trouble further down the line.“We've been affected and if you drive to any other pawn shops there's nothing in their stores at all. So for that to come back we need a normal economy to really get loans and sell things,” Mack said. 3747

PALM HARBOR, Fla. — A rare two-headed southern black racer snake was recently found at a home in Palm Harbor.Kay Rogers said her cat brought the snake into the home through the doggy door. The cat placed the snake on the carpet."She brings us presents all the time. This day, my daughter sent me a message. 'Mom, she brought in a snake, and it has two heads,'" Rogers saif. "I think this tops it, but she's an adventurous cat for sure."Rogers said her 13-year-old daughter, Avery, placed the snake in a plastic container. She said her daughter and her son like learning about reptiles."We went and got like a habitat setup for it. I was talking to a couple different reptile specialists and they were kind of helping me through what to do with him like getting him a heating pad and trying to feed him," Rogers said.The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission shared the story on Facebook. FWC said the phenomenon, bicephaly, is uncommon, but happens during embryo development when two monozygotic twins failed to separate, leaving the heads conjoined onto a single body.FWC says that both heads' tongue flicks and react to movement, but not always in the same way. Two-headed snakes are unlikely to survive in the wild, as the two brains make different decisions that inhibit the ability to feed or escape from predators."Because of the two head thing, he's very uncoordinated and couldn't get to the food very well. It was like one head would see the food and try to go for it, the other would be going the other way and pulling him back," Rogers said.The snake is currently being cared for and monitored by FWC staff."He was really an easy pet," Rogers said. I really just wanted to kind of see him thrive and have people that would take care of him and give him the best chance. I know, well my daughter's research shows they don't live well in the wild at all. Philonise Floyd, a brother of George Floyd, challenged Congress to "stop the pain" during an appearance at a House Judiciary hearing on policing practices.During his opening statement, Philonise Floyd recalled watching the bystander video of his brother's arrest — the video that shows a police officer kneeling on his neck for more than eight minutes. George Floyd later died in police custody."I can't tell you the kind of pain you feel when you watch something like that. When you watch your big brother, who you looked up to your whole entire life die, die begging for his mom?" Philonise Floyd said. "I'm tired. I'm tired of pain. Pain you feel when you watch something like that."Police originally took George Floyd into custody for allegedly using a countefeit bill to buy to but tobacco at a Minneapolis convenience store."He didn't deserve to die over ," Philonise Floyd said. "I'm asking you, is that what a black man's worth? Twenty dollars? This is 2020.
