President Donald Trump provided an update to the White House’s response to the coronavirus pandemic at a news conference on Wednesday.While coronavirus deaths are on the rise, cases appear to be leveling off. On Tuesday, there were 1,399 coronavirus-related deaths reported, according to Johns Hopkins University figures.While the positivity rate has dropped off slightly in recent days (from 8.6% to 8.3%), some public health experts are baffled by a drop in testing. Data indicates that fewer Americans are being tested for the virus. Part of the reason could be due to delays in getting results.Johns Hopkins University data indicates that 28 states saw a decline in testing. Among the states seeing declines in testing are Florida, Mississippi, Georgia and Arkansas, which are seeing higher positivity rates compared to the rest of the US. Only eight states have ramped up testing, according to the data.Despite the drop in testing, the White House has said that the US has “created the best COVID-19 testing system in the world.”“The United States also has far and away the most robust testing capacity in the world,” Trump said on Tuesday. “Testing has been incredible, what we’ve been able to do. Nobody is even close. Since March 12th, we’ve increased daily testing by 32,000 percent. How’s that?”While public health experts suggest that more tests would lead to a lower positivity rate, America’s positivity rate remains much higher than a number of developed nations, including Canada, Spain, Germany and Italy. The US positivity rate remains lower than a handful of countries, including, Mexico, India and Iran. Data from another hard-hit nation, Brazil, is not widely available.Ashish K. Jha, director of Harvard's Global Health Institute, says the US is on the wrong path with testing."It's a problem. And widespread one," Jha tweeted. Ponder’s pardon aired during the Republican National Convention Tuesday evening.Ponder has become an activist for prisoners and helping those behind bars return to normal life upon release. Ponder has helmed the Las Vegas-based organization HOPE for Prisoners for the last 15 years.Richard Beasley, a retired FBI agent who arrested Ponder, stood alongside Trump and Ponder during the pardon.Trump has previously been involved with HOPE for Prisoners. In February, Trump visited Las Vegas and met with 30 members of the program.Ponder said in February that his organization has helped 3,000 formerly incarcerated people back into the workforce.Trump has used pardons and clemencies sparingly during his tenure. POWAY (CNS) - Authorities today identified a 69-year-old man who was gravely injured when he was struck by a car while walking in the same Poway intersection where sheriff's deputies were investigating a collision in which his wife struck and injured a pedestrian about 30 minutes earlier.Robert Tockstein of Ramona was struck shortly after 8:35 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Twin Peaks Road and Midland Road, and he died at an Escondido hospital early Wednesday morning, according to sheriff's Lt. Dustin Lopez and the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.In the first crash, which happened around 8:05 p.m. Tuesday, Tockstein's wife struck a man who was walking in a crosswalk at the intersection, Lopez said. The victim was transported to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido where he was treated for minor injuries.While deputies investigated the first crash, Tockstein arrived at the scene, Lopez said.Tockstein moved his wife's vehicle and as he was walking back to the scene of the crash he was struck in the east crosswalk of Twin Peaks Road, the Medical Examiner's Office said in a statement.The driver of the Toyota Prius that struck Tockstein remained at the scene and cooperated with deputies, Lopez said.Tockstein was transported to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where he was pronounced dead at 1:58 a.m. Wednesday, the Medical Examiner's Office said. 1390
