(AP/KGTV) — The U.S. Navy is expected to honor a World War II hero when a new aircraft carrier is named for Mess Attendant 2nd Class Doris Miller. "Dorie" Miller enlisted in September 1939 as a Mess Attendant Third Class. He was recognized for manning a machine gun on the USS West Virginia and returning fire against Japanese planes during the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor. He then helped rescue injured sailors as ship evacuations were ordered. Miller was awarded the Navy Cross for valor for his actions, the first African American to receive the award.This will be the second ship named after Miller and the first aircraft carrier ever named after an African American.“In selecting this name, we honor the contributions of all our enlisted ranks, past and present, men and women, of every race, religion and background,” said Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly. “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. observed, ‘Everybody can be great - because anybody can serve’. (AP) — Mexican authorities have closed a border entry point in southern Mexico after thousands of Central American migrants tried to push their way across a bridge spanning the Suchiate River between Mexico and Guatemala. Normally migrants who want to request asylum in Mexico are allowed to cross the bridge. But many of migrants prefer to pass through Mexico en route to the U.S., which has repeatedly asked Mexico to impede their arrival. As the crowd swelled on the bridge, amid shoves, Mexican officials allowed several dozen migrants to enter the country in groups of 20. Mexico's government has said that migrants entering the country without registering will not be allowed to pass from the border area. But those seeking asylum or other protections will be allowed to apply and legalize their status.Guatemala tells the Associated Press they've counted more than 3,000 migrants who have registered at border crossings recently, but there were more migrants who haven't registered.Francisco Gardu?o, commissioner of Mexico’s National Immigration Institute, told the AP the migrants would not cross any farther.“They cannot enter because it would be in violation of the law,” he told the AP, adding there are “sufficient” troops to hold order in the area. 1270

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) – Firefighters Tuesday fought a blaze that burned just feet away from homes in El Cajon. According to crews, the fire broke out after 1 p.m. near Main Street and Travelodge Drive. Crews could be seen fighting the blaze from atop a hill in an effort to prevent flames from reaching nearby homes.Firefighters say, at one point, flames came within 20 feet of nearby homes. Heartland Fire, Viejas and Cal Fire all responded to the blaze along with a helicopter crew. The fire started as temperatures rose and humidity plummeted.
