Five years since the U.S. Supreme Court made same-sex marriage in this country legal, around 300,000 same-sex couples have wed. The June 26, 2015 ruling added to the day’s significance, which already has a decades-long history in the battle for LGBTQ rights.On June 26, 2003, the highest court in the country overturned a Texas statue making it a crime for two persons of the same sex to engage in certain intimate sexual conduct.In the ruling, Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote “The petitioners are entitled to respect for their private lives. The State cannot demean their existence or control their destiny by making their private sexual conduct a crime. Their right to liberty under the Due Process Clause gives them the full right to engage in their conduct without intervention of the government.”Ten years later, on June 26, 2013, the Supreme Court issued their ruling on United States v. Windsor, stating that a key part of the Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional.In that ruling, Justice Kennedy wrote, “DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) instructs all federal officials, and indeed all persons with whom same-sex couples interact, including their own children, that their marriage is less worthy than the marriages of others.”In 2013, 12 states and the District of Columbia recognized same-sex marriages. Just two years later, that number was at 37 states and the District of Columbia. Then on June 26, 2015, same-sex marriage became legal across the country in Obergefell v. Hodges.“The Constitution promises liberty to all within its reach, a liberty that includes certain specific rights that allow persons, within a lawful realm, to define and express their identity. The petitioners in these cases seek to find that liberty by marrying someone of the same sex and having their marriages deemed lawful on the same terms and conditions as marriages between persons of the opposite sex,” the ruling states.Articles written at the time of the ruling wondered if June 26 would become a national holiday to mark the significance of the decisions on this day.In 2017, on June 26, the Supreme Court ruled same-sex couples should both be listed on birth certificates in Pavan v Smith. Arkansas at the time said only biological parents could be listed on birth certificates.Already in 2020, the justices have ruled that a bar on sex discrimination in the workplace extends to gay, lesbian and transgender workers. 2426

For the first time since July, the White House’s coronavirus task force delivered a briefing on Thursday as cases reach record levels throughout the US.President Donald Trump did not participate in Thursday's news briefing. The president has not had any public events this week. The coronavirus task force encouraged Americans to remain vigilant and practice social distancing guidelines as the virus spreads throughout the US.Dr. Anthony Fauci, the federal government’s top infectious disease expert, said that the “cavalry is coming.” He said recent developments of a pair of vaccines showing an effectiveness of 95% should give Americans confidence to get a vaccine once they become available.“The process of the speed did not compromise at all the safety nor did it compromised the scientific integrity,” Fauci said. “It was a reflection of extraordinary scientific advances in these types of vaccines which allowed us to do things in months that actually took years before but I really want to settle that concern that people have about that.”While the tone from the White House coronavirus task force was against lockdowns, states across the country have reimplemented some shutdowns of and limits to businesses. Notably, much of California will go under a curfew nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m."We will be getting vaccine doses to people who are high priority at the end of December," Fauci said. "We aren't talking about shutting down the country. We are talking about locking down. We are talking about simple public health measures that we all talked about mask wearing, distancing, avoiding congregate settings, doing things to the extent that we can outdoors versus indoors and if we do that we'll be able to hold things off until the vaccine comes."Vice President Mike Pence says that the US will have 100 million doses of a vaccine ready to begin distribution as soon as an emergency use authorization is granted. General Gustave Perna, who is leading the government's distribution efforts of a vaccine said that when an emergency use authorization is given, the first doses of a vaccine will be distributed within 24 hours. Pfizer says its vaccine candidate could seek emergency use authorization from the FDA as soon as Friday.Distribution will be a challenge as the leading coronavirus vaccines have to be stored at extremely cold conditions.Perna said that the federal government is working with states on setting up places for a vaccine to be availble. The vaccines can be distributed from hospitals down to a local Walgreens or CVS. "We will distribute the vaccine accordingly," Perna said. "We want the vaccines at the places where the American people are comfortable; at our hospitals, our doctors offices, CVS, Walgreens and the health care facilities, places where people are comfortable going. That's where we started"Thursday’s briefing comes on the same day that the CDC urged Americans not to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday and asked Americans to only celebrate the holiday with those in their household.Earlier this week, task force member Dr. Scott Atlas criticized public health experts for advising Americans not to celebrate Thanksgiving with family. Atlas’ stance is an outlier among experts.On Wednesday, the number of coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic passed 250,000 in the United States. On Wednesday alone, more than 1,800 deaths were reported throughout the US, marking the most in a single day since the spring. 3488

  

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Vice President Mike Pence will visit Arizona on Friday, Oct. 30, where he will speak at two "Make American Great Again" rallies in Flagstaff and Tucson, his campaign announced Wednesday.Pence is scheduled to speak at 2:30 p.m. ET at Flagstaff Pulliam Airport in Flagstaff and at 5:30 p.m. ET at Tucson International Airport in Tucson, according to a news release.Watch Pence's Flagstaff event below:President Donald Trump flew to Arizona on Wednesday – his seventh visit to the state – where he held a campaign rally at Bullhead City Airport. Friday, Oct. 16 has been dubbed Global Cat Day, a day dedicated to saving cats and kittens from being killed.This comes at a time when many longstanding threats to felines have the potential to race forward, according to Alley Cat Allies.The organization dedicated to protecting cats says local shelters have seen an increase in impoundments as the pandemic continues to hit families financially, leaving them unable to care for their beloved animals."Too often, our disconnect from society during the pandemic is allowing dangerous animal control and shelter policies to advance unchecked in our communities,” said the organization’s president, Becky Robin son. “Global Cat Day is a reminder that the international movement to protect cats can never stop, even when so much of the world does."In addition to families turning over their felines, the organization says less cats are being spayed or neutered due to many veterinary clinics operating at reduced capacity.Robinson said these developments will impact cats for years to come.“Global Cat Day 2020 is a day to c
