SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Dozens of migrants seeking asylum in the United States are being processed Tuesday afternoon, according to an attorney.Eight migrants were allowed in for processing Monday night followed by dozens more Tuesday afternoon and evening. The rest of the migrant caravan is waiting in Tijuana to be allowed in and processed. The attorney, who is working with the group of migrants, said members of the caravan were asked to choose among themselves who would be processed.MAP: Where is the migrant caravan from?Women and children were reportedly in the first groups of migrants selected Monday and Tuesday. An official with U.S. Customs and Border Protection said that, although this group of migrants has been gaining national attention, the process the group is going through is standard. As far as the process the migrants are going through, CBP said that individuals who don’t have proper travel documents and try to enter into the U.S. may be subject to expedited removal.PHOTOS: Migrant caravan makes way to U.S-Mexico borderThose in expedited removal who express fear of return are then referred to United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.Migrants then go through a “fear interview” to determine whether or not they have a credible fear of persecution or torture. The San Ysidro border inspection facility can hold 300 people. Between October of 2017 and February of 2018, 8,000 asylum cases were processed.RELATED: Migrant caravan waiting for entry at US-Mexico borderAccording to a CBP spokesperson, port capacity at San Ysidro is dependent on holding space, volume of traffic, officer resources and complexity of cases among other factors.“CBP is committed to maintaining security and meeting the health and safety needs of those persons in our custody, the traveling public, and officers and personnel. At times, this has required us to limit the number of people we can bring in the port facility for processing at a given time, including in 2016 when an influx of Haitians arrived at the California border, and as recently as within the past six months. In recent days, San Ysidro has exceeded port capacity due to an increase in arrivals of undocumented persons making asylum claims or presenting complex cases. Accordingly, CBP has had to limit the number of new arrivals for processing. CBP will continue to work with its interagency partners at ICE to ensure continued management of persons presenting without documents and appropriate care and custody of all those in our facility,” the spokesperson said in part.Migrants with the caravan have made their trip to the U.S.-Mexico border from three different countries in Central America. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Republican John Cox focused on his stance to try and fix the high cost of living in California, while Democrat Gavin Newsom highlighted his opposition to Trump during a debate Monday. The hour-long public radio debate remained civil, with the two candidates for governor sparring on policy and mostly avoiding personal attacks.Cox pledged to reduce taxes and regulations that he says drive up the cost of living in the nation's most populous state while Newsom, a former mayor of San Francisco, is running on his willingness to make bold decisions and his opposition to Trump.RELATED: San Diego County key dates to know before Election DayNeither strayed from their well-worn positions, and the debate appeared to do little to change the race in which Newsom is heavily favored."We represent the vast majority of Californians that reject John Cox's absolute allegiance to Trump and Trumpism," Newsom, California's lieutenant governor, said during what's likely to be the only one-on-one contest between the two men. Both candidates agreed that tackling issues such as housing affordability, homelessness and California's cost of living should be the priority of the next governor, but they presented vastly different visions for how to proceed. The two also sparred on criminal justice reform, immigration and the environment.RELATED: California sets record as voter registration tops 19 million"This campaign is about change versus the status quo. I represent change," Cox said in arguing that the policies of Democrats have made California unaffordable. The Nov. 6 election comes as the state faces a housing crisis and is drastically behind on building what it needs to house its population of nearly 40 million people.Cox said he would change environmental regulations that can make it so expensive to build in the state. Newsom hinted at reforming California's property tax system, saying rules that limit how much property tax cities can collect saps the incentive from building. On criminal justice reform, Newsom said he would continue the policies of outgoing Gov. Jerry Brown that focus on rehabilitating convicted criminals and putting fewer people behind bars.Cox said he wouldn't have signed a new law that opens police misconduct records to the public.Cox defended his support for a border wall and said California should undo its recently passed sanctuary law that limits local law enforcement cooperation with immigration authorities. Newsom strongly defended state immigration laws."I fear that under a Cox administration working hand-in-glove with Donald Trump that our progressive and enlightened polices on immigration will roll back into the dark ages," he said. The candidates split on a new California law that eliminates money bail. Cox said the policy wrongly eliminates the entire bail industry, while Newsom said systems based on money harm the poor and racial minorities.A September poll by the Public Policy Institute of California showed Newsom with a comfortable but shrinking lead over Cox — 51 percent to 39 percent with 7 percent of likely voters undecided. The survey had a margin of error of 4 percentage points.Newsom led 55-31 in the institute's July poll.Campaign finance records show Newsom had million in the bank on Sept. 22, compared with .7 million for Cox.Cox is a lawyer, accountant and investor from the San Diego area who has never held elected office. 3459

SARASOTA, Fla. — A Florida woman says she fell ill with COVID-19 and passed the coronavirus onto her 99-year-old mother who lives with her.Ruta Jouniari said she felt sick in October. She had a fever, cough and headache."I literally couldn't breathe. I tried to take a breath and the pain in my lungs was so incredible," she said.Jouniari was hospitalized at Sarasota Memorial Hospital for three days, but did not need oxygen."The nights were horrific, you have night sweats, shivering. You're achy. You can't breathe," she said. Her mother, who Jouniari is the primary caregiver of in her home, later tested positive for COVID-19.Jouniari said her mother never left the house, so she knows she brought the virus home, but she doesn't know where she contracted it.Her mother's age put her at a high risk of contracting the virus. Her mother, she added, suffered from a stroke about seven years ago."The guilt trip that goes with a child giving their parent COVID is not a fun reality of life," she said.Jouniari said her mother was hospitalized for 10 days. She was on a ventilator in an intensive care unit. Doctors treated her mother with plasma, remdesivir and dexamethasone."Going in, it's so frightening and you're so scared and you're scared for yourself when you're the patient, but you're even more scared knowing the statistics of a 99-year-old going in," said Jouniari.Jouniari said her mother left the hospital on Monday."For her to come out and come home today and she's in her own room, her own bed, breathing on two liters of oxygen. It's just amazing," she said. She urges everyone to take precautions and protect the vulnerable population."I hate to say this, but you could kill them. I was witness to that. I could have. My mom is a miracle of miracles. She's a statistic anomaly. She shouldn't have made it and she did," said Jouniari. She said she appreciates everyone who prayed for her mother. She said she is also thankful for the doctors and nurses who cared for her mother."I had over 800 people praying for her and it was incredible...the power of that was just amazing," Jouniari said. "For those families who are suffering, I hope they have solace and peace, just pray hard and have faith just know that people at 99 make it out. She is a testament to that."This story was originally published by Julie Salomone at WFTS. 2352
