Looking around the room where Hector Barajas spends the majority of his time, you could easily forget you’re in Mexico. American flags, G.I. Joes, and military dog tags line the walls.“I wanted to serve my country,” Barajas recalls, of his decision to join the United States military, where he served 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army from 1995 to 2001.But he sits in Tijuana not by choice.“I was picked up by immigration and deported in 2004,” he said. The phrase “deported veteran” may not be a common part of most people’s vocabulary, but they exist—and there are many. The military does not keep and make public an official count of deported veterans, but the ACLU, which assists deported veterans, including Barajas, estimates the number is easily in the thousands.“One of the most difficult things is being separated from your kids,” Barajas says, referring to his 11-year old daughter who still lives back in California with her mother.  “I try to call her everyday in the mornings when she’s going to school, and we Skype.”Barajas was born in southern Mexico. His parents had crossed the border illegally some time earlier, and when Barajas turned 7, Barajas—along with his sister and a cousin—crossed over to meet them.  They succeeded and spent the majority of their upbringing in southern California. He considers the U.S. his only real home.“It’s where I grew up, it’s where I studied. I did everything in the United States.”It’s also where he took an oath to defend that very same country. But shortly after his enlistment ended in 2001, Barajas says he made a mistake. He was convicted of “shooting at an occupied motor vehicle” and sentenced to prison.  Not long after his release two years later, he was picked up and deported to Mexico. He made it back to the U.S.—“snuck” back home, as he says—and was able to remain until authorities stopped him following a fender bender in 2010. That lead to his re-deportation.He’s been fighting to become a permanent citizen ever since. California Governor Jerry Brown pardoned him last year, erasing that conviction off his record. That, he says, gives him hope that citizenship may not be far off.But in the meantime—and for the last 5 years—Barajas has devoted his time to helping other deported vets. He created the Deported Veterans Support House in Tijuana.“I basically started doing this full time and turning my apartment into a support house [in 2013] and then it just took off from there,” he says smiling. It’s a place where recently deported veterans can get help with benefits, compensations and benefits they may be owed, even medical assistance. He says they’ve had about 40 people in total utilizing the shelter as a temporary place to live. Barajas says one of the hardest parts about being deported is losing your support network and going through it all in what for many of them is a strange land.“When you get deported some of us really don’t know the country that we’re deported to. We may not have been to this country since we were children.”He wants anyone enlisted in the U.S. military to know one thing: just because you have legal permanent resident status and you join the military, it does not guarantee that you will automatically become a citizen. You have to actively pursue citizenship.“When I got my green card, it’s a legal permanent resident card,” Barajas says. “I thought it was permanent. But its not permanent.”As for the crimes he and other veterans may have committed that lead to their deportation, he says every makes mistakes—but they should be allowed to pay their debt to society and remain in the U.S.“Regardless of what these individuals have done they should still be allowed to stay in the U.S. with their families,” he said. Now, the only way he may be guaranteed to get back into the country he calls home is when he dies since he would be eligible for burial at Arlington National Cemetery. 3927

LONDON (AP) — Cinema chain Cineworld says it is considering closing all its movie theaters in Britain and the United States, after the postponement of the new James Bond film left a big hole in schedules. Cineworld Group PLC owns 543 Regal cinemas in the U.S. and 128 Cineworld venues in the U.K. and Ireland. It said Sunday it was "considering the temporary closure of our U.K. and U.S. cinemas, but a final decision has not yet been reached." The statement came after the Sunday Times reported that Cineworld's U.K. theaters will shut in the coming weeks. The release of James Bond thriller "No Time to Die" has been delayed from November until April 2021 because of the effect of the coronavirus pandemic. 716

LONG ISLAND — Mini horses visited health care workers at Katz Women’s Hospital on Long Island as an expression of gratitude toward the overtaxed medical staff.HorseAbility, a Long Island organization, brought the horses to the hospital for the visit on world gratitude day.Normally, the horses work with people with special needs, but the team at HorseAbility felt health care workers battling COVID-19 could use some time with the horses.“They say there are so many benefits in pet therapy, it doesn’t matter what the animal is the result is the same, it’s a reduction in stress,” said Michael Goldberg, Executive Director at Long Island Jewish Medical Center.Employees became emotional, sharing how the calmness of the horses was reminding them to remain calm. This story originally reported by Keith Lopez on PIX11.com. 830

LOS ANGELES (AP) — One of the deadliest accidents in recent U.S. maritime history was the fault of the owners of a dive boat whose lack of oversight resulted in a fire that swept through the vessel and killed all 34 people in their bunks below deck. The National Transportation Safety Board says Tuesday the Conception's captain failed to post a roving night watchman aboard the Southern California scuba dive vessel, which allowed the fire to quickly spread and trap the 33 passengers and one crew member. The NTSB also faulted the Coast Guard's inadequate regulations. Attorneys for the boat's owner and the captain did not immediately respond to requests for comment. 678

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Four people were wounded, one fatally, when gunfire erupted Tuesday morning at a large party taking place at a mansion north of Beverly Hills where police had earlier responded to multiple calls of disturbing the peace.Firefighters and paramedics sent to the 13200 block of Mulholland Drive about 12:45 a.m. located three adults who had been wounded, and they were treated at the scene, then taken to a hospital, according to Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department. A fourth person was found nearby with an injury to his wrist, Prange said, adding the victim's injury was not caused by gunfire. One shooting victim was hospitalized in grave condition and the other two were hospitalized in critical condition, Prange said.A woman about 35 years of age died at a hospital, said Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Chris Ramirez. Information was not immediately available on her identity.Ramirez said the other two shooting victims found at the scene were males, and they were displaying stable vital signs Tuesday morning.A woman who also had been shot went to a hospital in a private vehicle, and was in stable condition, Ramirez said.Ramirez said the crime apparently was gang-related, and no arrests have been reported. No suspect information was immediately available.Ramirez said the shooting was being investigated by detectives from the LAPD West Bureau Homicide office, and he urged anyone with information on the crime to call 213-382-9470.The house had been rented for the party, according to reports from the scene.A video posted to social media captured the sounds of the gunfire, at least six shots initially fired, followed by at least eight more. People attending the party continued on as if nothing had occurred following the gunfire, the video showed. About two minutes later, a hail of gunfire can be heard and people begin screaming and running and trying to find safe places to hide. The video also contained blurry images of what appeared to be two gunshot victims. The Los Angeles Police Department received at least five calls from residents who reported instances of disturbing the peace in the neighborhood beginning about 6:30 p.m. Monday. Responding officers found a large party taking place at a three-story home with about 200 people attending, according to the LAPD.Officers enforced traffic and parking violations, but did not enforce the county's health order banning large gatherings, the department said. Video from NBC4 showed vehicles being ticketed. The organizer of the party, identified by NBC4 only as "Kenny," told the station the party was for his friends and masks were made available to guests, who also had to undergo a temperature check before being allowed inside. No party attendees could be seen wearing masks in video shot by multiple broadcast outlets.A food truck was on site and multiple high-end vehicle, including Lamborghinis and a Rolls Royce, could be seen on the video posted to social media. The party is the second large-scale gathering held amid the coronavirus pandemic in the L.A. area, in spite of public health restrictions barring parties. On Friday night, dozens of people were seen attending a party -- again, mostly without masks or physical distancing -- at the Sassafras Saloon in Hollywood, a gathering that was alleged to have been attended by local law enforcement members. A person familiar with the gathering told the Los Angeles Times the party was planned for members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, but the agency has denied any involvement in the event and insisted that people seen in online video from the event do not work for the department. The Los Angeles Police Department issued a statement Monday saying it was aware of the gathering and was working to determine if any LAPD employees attended.Los Angeles County public health director Barbara Ferrer said Monday the state Department of Alcohol and Beverage Control was investigating the party, along with the county. She said county health inspectors went to the Vine Street bar Saturday and were told the venue has been closed but only opened for the Friday night private party. 4167
