SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sailors from the USS Abraham Lincoln Strike Group are returning home after 294 days.Sailors left from their home port in Virginia in April and saw their deployment extended twice before coming to their new home port of Coronado.P02 John Aportela is one of the the 6,000 sailors that made up the strike group. Like many parents, he met his 6-month-old daughter for the first time.“I’m blessed to be back and I thank God for bringing us back safe." Aportela said.RELATED: Thousands of sailors leave for 7-month deployment on USS RooseveltGrowing tensions in the Middle East kept the strike group at the ready in the area. Sailors and Marines were involved with maritime security and combat missions while working with allies, including France, Bahrain, Malaysia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and Oman. Those missions took the crew across the globe to places like Singapore, Saipan, Philippines, Japan, Israel, Thailand, Australia, Maldives, Hong Kong, and other locations. The strike group's Helicopter Marine Strike Squadron 79, or "The Griffins," returned to NAS Coronado Sunday ahead of the carrier's arrival. That team was supposed to return before Halloween, but had their employment extended. The group's 10-month deployment was the longest carrier deployment since the Cold War. During its deployment, the group has assisted operations in the U.S. 5th, 6th, and 7th Fleet areas of operation spanning the globe.Sailors are expected to pull into San Diego at about 10 a.m.The USS Abraham Lincoln coalition works to provide deterrence, promote peace and security, preserve freedom of the sea, and offer humanitarian and disaster response. 1661

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County started the rainfall season in October bone dry, but now the region is getting ready for another storm in time for Thanksgiving.San Diego's weekend will be great, cooling down on Monday before the storm arrives. Winds will pick up on Tuesday. Then, the surf will increase along the coast before the Thanksgiving storm arrives. The atmospheric river will potentially set up the stage for heavy rain, flash flooding, and thunderstorms during the major winter storm. Rainfall totals could average from 3-5 inches for the coast and valleys and 4-8 inches in the mountains. Snow levels will start out high around 8,000 feet. RELATED: Today's 10News weather forecastHere's how you can keep your pets safe with the cold weatherCold air will settle in Friday with snow levels dropping to 3,500 feet. That means snow could fall in Julian, Palomar, Mt. Laguna, and even Descanso. The best chance for snow will be Thursday and Friday. The chance of rain will begin late Tuesday, lasting through Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday. Often times San Diego is the envy of the nation, especially during the holiday. The region's warmest Thanksgiving happened in 2017, hitting 87 degrees. Last year the holiday took a chilly turn, plunging down to 58 degrees — just 4 degrees shy of San Diego's coldest Thanksgiving in 1919. Last year, San Diego also picked up 0.04 inches of light rain. The wettest Thanksgiving in San Diego's history received 1.26 inches in 2008, but the expected winter system this week could challenge that record.Traveling this ThanksgivingThe expected wet weather is especially important to consider, as this holiday expects to see the highest Thanksgiving volume on record for California travelers. The holiday will also be the second-highest travel volume nationally since 2000, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California.AAA says about 7 million Americans will be traveling 50 miles or more this Thanksgiving. Of that number, about 4.3 million are from Southern California.Of those Southern Californians, 3.7 million will travel by car, 500,000 by aircraft, and 123,800 will use other modes of transportation, like buses or cruise ships.RELATED:AAA provides tips on preparing vehicles for holiday travelTSA offers advice to travelers for Thanksgiving holiday weekendWith the influx or drivers, thousands of expected to run into problems on the road, according to AAA. The Auto Club says about 100,000 Californians and 368,000 nationwide will need roadside assistance for things like flat tires, dead batteries, or lockouts."This is the fourth Thanksgiving holiday period in a row that the percentage growth in air travel for Californians is higher than the growth in car travel, indicating continued consumer confidence in spending more for holiday trips," said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring. "That's despite an average 7 percent increase in airfares over last year."AAA says the top five destinations for Southern California residents will be Las Vegas, San Diego, Mexico (cruises and resorts), the Grand Canyon and Lake Tahoe. 3099

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County Supervisors and health officials use 13 "triggers" to monitor coronavirus case trends and determine how public health orders are made. The triggers measure how the county's coronavirus cases are increasing or decreasing, hospital capacity, and the region's ability to track and monitor cases. According to the county, the health officer can modify health orders when community outbreaks, PPE supply, or ICU capacity are exceeded; or when one of more of the remaining criteria in at least two of the three sections below are met:Epidemiology (surveillance)Case Count: Increase new case counts of at least 10% for five consecutive days above a stable baseline without substantial increase in testingCommunity Outbreaks: Seven or more new outbreaks in community settings in a 7-day periodCOVID-Syndromic: Upward trajectory of COVID-like syndromic cases reported within a 14-day periodILI: Upward trajectory of influenza-like illnesses (ILI) reported within a 14-day periodHealthcare (hospital capacity)Hospital Capacity: Approach 80% capacity for all hospital beds in the countyIncreasing Hospitalizations: >10% increase in the number of confirmed COVID19 patients currently hospitalized, measured as an average of the past 3 days and compared to the average of the 3 days priorLimited Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Capacity: <20% availability of ICU bedsLimited Ventilator Capacity: <25% availability of ventilatorsPPE Supply: ≤ 50% of hospitals have at least a 15-day supply of PPEPublic Health (response)Cases: Greater than 8% of positive test as a percent of total tests within a 14-day periodCase Investigation: 70% or less of investigations are initiated within 24 hours of notification over a 7-day periodContact Tracing: Make first contact attempt for 70% or less of close contacts of new positive cases within 24 hours of identificationHomeless Population: Temporary shelter available for less than 15% of homeless population (e.g., space constraints, medically vulnerable household members, or otherwise) 2059

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County homebuyers could be gaining an upper hand in negotiations as the region's housing market slows.A new report from real-estate tracker CoreLogic says 2,936 homes changed hands in San Diego County in November, an 11 percent drop from November 2017. Meanwhile, the rate of home-price appreciation slowed to 4.6 percent year-over-year. The median home price was 5,000 in November."It's a good time to get in there," said Mark Goldman, a San Diego loan officer with C-2 Financial. "There's more selection of homes to purchase, and there's probably sellers who are more willing to consider offers maybe a little bit below their list price, and so forth."CoreLogic says Southern California as a whole has seen its biggest sales drop in three years. The company says higher interest rates and the volatile stock market could be contributing to buyer pullback. The average rate for a 30-year-fixed is now 4.55 percent, up about a half percent from a year ago. Goldman said qualifying families, even with a few percent cash down, should be able to get an offer accepted in this market."Be cautious, make an offer at a good price, work with a professional realtor who can guide you to a reasonable price, but if you're going to be in that house five years or so, I think you'll be happy," Goldman said.Goldman said the market is coasting at a rate of appreciation that is more sustainable. He said the 6 to 8 percent annual price growth could not last with wages not growing nearly as fast, he said. Goldman added he expects the market to speed up again in the springtime, which is peak season, but that he does not expect prices to skyrocket. 1679

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ross Rock, or as locals prefer "The Rock," has had its share of headgear. The lone rock just off the coast from Sunset Cliffs Boulevard has been the target of vandals in the past and has again been crowned, this time by a mermaid. It's not clear how the mermaid was installed on top of the rock. Its steep face makes it difficult for anyone brave enough to try and scale it.BACK IN 2006: San Diegans finding peace atop Ross Rock at Sunset CliffsPhotos from 10News Weather Watcher Jim Grant show the mermaid now in place, looking into Point Loma under the gray sky.10News reporter Travis Rice is looking into this story and will have more on 10News at 5 p.m.The mysteriously installed mermaid is just the latest object to grace "The Rock" at Sunset Cliffs. Placing objects on the Ross Rock has almost become a ritual. In 2006, a large pterodactyl had sat atop the rock before being washed away. A peace sign, the numbers "2010" — local graduates, perhaps? — a Christmas tree, a tiki head, and at one point, a toilet with a Raiders fan wedged inside have all been found taking refuge from the waves below. It remains unclear who makes the objects or how they have installed them in the past.Time and again, however, Mother Nature or possibly another vandal has removed what's been placed. 1359
