Dolly Parton spent Thursday at Vanderbilt's Children's Hospital to celebrate a deeply personal milestone. Her niece, Hannah Dennison, turns 30 years old on Sunday — a birthday Parton wasn't always sure she'd be able to celebrate."Twenty-six years ago is when Hannah was diagnosed with leukemia, and for five years we didn't know if we'd be keeping her or not," Parton told a room full of doctors, nurses, patients and families. "But Hannah now stands here as our chemo hero. She shows that miracles do happen with good care, great doctors and great nurses."Parton met some of those doctors and nurses last fall when she visited the hospital to release her first-ever children's album. During that visit, she decided to donate million to the hospital."They took such good care of her and just looking at the little faces of the kids going through this and the parents who suffer so much as well; it's just touching and moving," she said. EL CAJON (CNS) - A man accused of setting a bank ablaze and looting several stores following a contentious police protest in La Mesa pleaded not guilty today to nearly a dozen felony arson, burglary and vandalism charges.Ricky Bernard Cooper, 33, is charged with setting a fire inside the Chase bank branch at 4791 Spring St. and looting Sally Beauty, Play it Again Sports and the Vons supermarket at the La Mesa Springs Shopping Center.Deputy District Attorney David Vallero alleged that Cooper was one of several people who broke into businesses at the shopping center and took items on the night of May 30.The prosecutor said Cooper also admitted to burning papers inside the bank, though he claimed they ``didn't catch.'' Vallero alleged that several people lit fires inside the bank, which burned to the ground.``This defendant was engaged in very serious conduct which, probably from his perspective during this night, seemed like a night when there was going to be no laws and no rules,'' Vallero alleged. San Diego County Superior Court Judge John Thompson set Cooper's bail at 0,000. His next court date is a Nov. 30 readiness conference.Cooper's arrest was announced last week by the FBI, along with the arrest of 19-year-old Alexander Jacob King, who is also accused of arson and looting. Johnson's rough arrest by a white La Mesa police officer was captured on video and proliferated over social media, prompting extensive backlash against the police department and a federal lawsuit filed by Johnson against the city.The May 30 protest began with demonstrators marching on Interstate 8 in the afternoon, before the group moved to the La Mesa police station. During an interview with ABC News on Thursday, Dr. Anthony Fauci said that wearing goggles can offer an additional layer of protection against the coronavirus.Fauci’s suggestion was not an official recommendation, but the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, explained why eyes can also be responsible for coronavirus infections."You have mucosa in the nose, mucosa in the mouth, but you also have mucosa in the eye," Fauci said. "Theoretically, you should protect all the mucosal surfaces. So if you have goggles or an eye shield you should use it."Fauci said his suggestion might become an official recommendation for the public at some point, much how like masks became an official recommendation in April. The CDC, however, has included eye protection in some of its sets of guidance for healthcare workers, depending on the circumstance.Last month, the Lancet published a study funded by the World Health Organization that indicated that wearing eye protection decreases the risk of catching the virus. The study suggests that wearing eye protection resulted in a 78% reduction in infection; infection via the ocular route might occur by aerosol transmission or self-inoculation, the study said. (KGTV) - A grieving dog owner says a routine surgery turned deadly after his dog suffered burns during a brief stay.In early May, John San Filippo brought 11-year-old Sofia, a Boxer mix, to the Bastet Veterinary Hospital for knee surgery."Dropped her off in the morning and picked up her up in the afternoon. She was doing great," said San Filippo.Six days after the surgery, San Filippo found several oozing sores on her right side. The vet told him the electric blanket used to warm Sofia had somehow burned her. "I was stunned, but at that point, it was just three little spots," said San Filippo.Within weeks, the full extent of the burns emerged: 3rd- and 4th-degree burns on over 40% of her body. Sofia developed sepsis and pneumonia, before she died in early June."Just broke down crying ... brought her in for knee surgery and my dog was barbecued," said San Filippo. San Filippo has filed a complaint with the State Veterinary Medical Board and wants the business shut down.Bastet Veterinary Hospital released the following statement: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Sofia, which was a result of thermal burns derived from the malfunction of our patient warming system. We are committed to working with all involved parties to help recoup financial losses, and our hearts grieve along with Sofia'a family for their loss."Experts suggest asking your veterinarian about how they warm animals during anesthesia.
