LAS VEGAS — It’s the season for tamales when many in the Hispanic community enjoy having this tasty dish over the holidays, but how has the pandemic affected this tradition with more people staying home?Tamale season is in full swing at La Bonita Supermarket as the holiday season ramps up. Ready-to-eat pre-made tamales give customers a piece of home cooking.“It comes from like grandma the night before getting everything ready for Christmas Eve,” Zaira Contreras, who works in marketing for the supermarket, said. It’s a holiday tradition for many Hispanic families. But this year, their tortilleria is extra busy. Workers say sales of masa have skyrocketed.“I was just talking to one of the guys and he was saying that production has not stopped in these couple weeks,” she said. They’re noticing more families deciding to make their own tamales meaning more people are staying at home, likely with just their immediate families.“More people have time at home, they want to try and make them. It’s pretty neat,” Contreras said. What surprised workers the most is that while holiday sales were down this year, sales of pre-made tamales were up by 10%.“Sometimes they want something to go and we offer curbside pickup at some of our stores,” she said.Workers believe the tradition of holiday tamales is holding strong and expect to be busy churning out more masa.“They’re working hard and they’re like it’s crazy,” she said. This story was first published by Jeremy Chen at KTNV in Las Vegas, Nevada. 1506

LAKEWOOD, Ohio — When she heard Jimmy Adkins was running his own taxi service in Ohio she immediately warned her friends and family."We want people to know that he's out there," said a witness who did not want to be identified. That's because the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department says Adkins is a registered sex offender. One that's been convicted twice, in his most recent crime involving a young relative."My niece was living with him and that's when he made the attempt to have sex with her," said the witness.Adkins is running a service called Lakewood Smart Taxi.He needs a license to run his service, but he doesn't have one. Just last month, he got arrested for transporting passengers without it.But even if he applied for that license, there's no way Adkins could get one."That's the thing, within the city's ordinance, they require that you have a clean record," said Derrick Russell, a consultant of Ace Taxi, a legitimate taxi company in Cleveland.Five years ago Russell fired Adkins because of his criminal record."I was shocked, I've done investigations for insurance companies for a number of years and major companies, I had not seen a record like that," said Russell. He says Lakewood Smart Taxi isn't the first of its kind."Anyone can put a magnet on the side of their car and call themselves a taxi because unfortunately, the regulations are really gray in that area, but the other thing is there is no enforcement," he said. The family of Adkins' victims is advising against getting in his car."Lord knows what he can do, and it's just not safe, it's not safe, you know what I mean there could be anything that could happen," said the unidentified witness.Adkins was contacted multiple times for comment but never called back. 1765

Las Vegas mass shooter Stephen C. Paddock, a high-stakes gambler who once boasted of wagering as much as million in a single night, had "lost a significant amount of wealth" in the two years prior to last month's massacre, the city's sheriff said in a recent interview.Sheriff Joseph Lombardo described Paddock as a narcissist and "status-driven" and said his financial decline "may have a determining effect on why he decided to do what he did."Lombardo's statements, made during a wide-ranging interview with CNN affiliate KLAS, are the closest a law enforcement official has come to articulating a possible motive in the October 1 attack in which at least 58 people were killed and more than 500 were wounded. 723

LARGO, Fla. — While many of us have spent the year wishing things were better, 93-year-old Virgil Sweet has spent the year trying to make it better.Sweet started by giving away his ,200 government stimulus check."I thought, 'I don’t really have a need for that so I’m going to give it to someone who does,'" said Sweet. ABC Action News did a previous story in May to help Sweet get the word out that he was asking people impacted by the pandemic to write him letters about why they needed the money. That story reached people all over the country. Letters poured in from people who needed help and Sweet picked one family to get his check."I found a lady who has two children. One of them is autistic and she has brain cancer so she got the ,200," said Sweet. But Sweet couldn’t stop thinking about the other heartbreaking letters. So he asked others to donate their checks to help. "We did it the old fashioned way, snail mail. We didn’t use email. We didn’t use TikTok or any of that stuff I don’t know anything about," said Sweet.Sweet got donations from California to Pennsylvania, from Alaska to Florida. He raised ,780 for more than 60 families across the country — and he did it from the comfort of his own home using mail as his main source of communication.Sweet says there are still many people in need and he hopes his story shows people you can make a difference no matter what age or what tools you have."You just have to have the passion to help people and you can do it from sitting in your own home," said Sweet. This story was first reported by Wendi Lane at WFTS in Tampa Bay, Florida. 1653

LAKE CHARLES, La. — A Confederate statue has fallen victim to Hurricane Laura. The South’s Defenders monument has stood since 1915 outside a courthouse in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where local authorities voted 10-4 this month to keep it in place. The statue was reportedly erected to honor Confederate soldiers from the area and other towns across the South. Critics call it a symbol of racism that glorifies slavery. But a Calcasieu Parish official said they asked for public comments, and got 878 written responses against relocating the monument, and only 67 in favor of moving it.Now the pedestal is empty, and the Confederate statue is in pieces on the ground, victim to a Category 4 hurricane that struck the city early Thursday. 740
