BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhuanet) -- Amazon.com’s e-book reader Kindle 3G with special offers is now the company’s top-selling e-book device, according to media reports on Wednesday.Amazon revealed in its quarterly earnings report that the ad-supported version costs 139 U.S. dollars,  50 dollars cheaper than the comparable Kindle 3G, and costs the same as a Kindle with Wi-Fi connectivity. SYDNEY, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- People sitting in front of TV for hours on end could shorten their life expectancy by almost five years, according to an Australian study published on Tuesday by the British Journal of Sports Medicine.Researchers from the University of Queensland estimate that for every hour adults spend in front of TV, their life expectancy shortens by almost 22 minutes.Those who watched six hours a day lived 4.8 years less than those who don't watch TV.The study is the first in Australia to look into how TV habits affect longevity.The Australian researchers found that watching TV could have a similar negative impact on life expectancy to that of obesity, smoking and low physical activity."People don't realize how it all adds up," the study's lead author Dr. Lennert Veerman told the Australian Associated Press (AAP)."They should try not to watch too much TV and find alternative things to do, preferably things that are light activities," Veerman said.The study was based on data from the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle study and asked more than 11,000 people aged over 25 about their weekly TV viewing time.The study found that in 2008 Australian adults watched 9.8 billion hours of TV."These findings suggest that substantial loss of life may be associated with prolonged TV viewing time among Australian adults," the study said."TV viewing time may have adverse health consequences that rival those of lack of physical activity, obesity and smoking; every single hour of TV viewed may shorten life by as much as 22 minutes," it said."With further corroborative evidence, a public health case could be made that adults also need to limit the time spent watching TV."Australians are recommended to spend at least 30 minutes a day doing moderate-intensity physical activity to reduce an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

SHENZHEN, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese scientists who have fully sequenced the genome of the new E. Coli spreading through Europe said Saturday they found genes in the bacteria that gave it resistance to eight classes of antibiotics.Researchers with the Beijing Genomics Institute, the world's largest DNA sequencing center, have found genes in the newly identified 0104 strain of E. Coli bacteria that made it resistant to major classes of antibiotics including sulfonamide, cephalothin, penicillin and streptomycin.This helped explain why doctors in Europe had difficulties in fighting the bug that has killed 18 people and sickened nearly 2,000, BGI's major research arm in Shenzhen said on its website Saturday.This would help doctors choose right medicines for the treatment, it said.The researchers are developing a diagnostic kit which will be used to detect the bacteria and prevent the epidemic from spreading further.The Chinese researchers obtained DNA samples of the bacteria from collaborating scientists in Germany and fully sequenced its genome in three days this week.They announced on Thursday the E. Coli spreading through Europe was "a new strain of bacteria that is highly infectious and toxic".The 0104 strain of E. Coli was not previously involved in any E. Coli outbreaks. However, it has 93 percent sequence similarity with the EAEC 55989 E. Coli strain which was isolated in the Central African Republic and known to cause seriously diarrhea, BGI said.The source of the outbreak is unknown, but scientists say it is highly likely to have originated in contaminated vegetables or salad in Germany.

CANBERRA, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Australia's new chief medical officer, Professor Chris Baggoley, on Wednesday said Australian should not be worried about reports that a mutant strain of the deadly bird flu virus is spreading across Asia and beyond.On Monday, the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said a mutant strain of the deadly avian influenza virus was spreading in Asia and issued a warning that the bird flu could spread from poultry to humans. It urged "heightened readiness and surveillance" as the mutant strain posed "unpredictable risks to human health."But Professor Baggoley, who took office on Tuesday, said Australia is well served by strict testing and customs regimes, adding that avian migration patterns also mean infected birds are highly unlikely to arrive in Australia."I don't think we should be worried," Prof Baggoley told Sky News."The country and the Australian government is certainly vigilant in relation to bird flu."Prof. Baggoley insisted the H5N1 virus remains overwhelmingly a disease of birds and it is very uncommon for humans to catch it. It is also exceedingly rare for humans to spread it among themselves.He said that even if bird flu did arrive and affected humans, Australia is ready to respond to any new and significant developments in bird flu."Australia tests migratory wild birds, looking for H5N1, and has been doing this for some years and has never found it," he said."On the human side of things, Australia has been preparing for a possible outbreak of H5N1 since 2004."We've got the laboratory capacity to diagnose influenza; we've got arrangements in place for a rapid production of an H5N1 vaccine for humans, and we've got ready access to antivirals."There have been no outbreaks of bird flu in Australia to date.The UN said the latest human death from bird flu occurred earlier this month in Cambodia, which has registered eight cases of human infection this year, all of them fatal.H5N1 has infected 565 people since it first appeared in 2003, killing 331.
