Carnival Cruise Lines announced Monday it will continue a suspension of operations in North America through the end of September amid the spread of the coronavirus. The cruise line’s decision takes its suspension well past a US government-mandated prohibition on cruises. The CDC issued a 100-day no-sail order on April 15, which is set to expire on July 24. It’s unclear whether the CDC will extend the order.Cruise ships became the site of several early outbreaks of the virus, causing passengers on board a number of ships to be quarantined as officials tried to determine how to safely allow passengers to disembark. The issue with outbreaks of COVID-19 have lingered on cruise ships as hundreds of crew members have remained quarantined on board ships for months.“Carnival is giving guests who wish to move their booking to a later date a rebooking offer that combines a Future Cruise Credit (FCC) and either a 0 or 0 Onboard Credit (OBC) that has proven very popular with their guests,” Carnival said in a statement. “Guests, as always, have the option to receive a full refund. The process is fully automated so that guests can submit their preference online and they have until May 31, 2021 to make a selection.”Whether Carnival is able to resume operations in October remains in doubt. Leading infectious disease experts expect cases in the fall to surge again. 1382

CARMEL VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) — North County fans of Salt & Straw will soon have another option to grab a scoop closer to home. The ice cream parlor's second San Diego location is set to open at Carmel Valley's One Paseo development on Friday, March 22, a spokesperson told 10News. The first 100 guests will also get a custom Salt & Straw tote bag at the opening.Known for its unique flavors that have already attracted fans to its first San Diego stop in Little Italy, Salt & Straw has scooped out a niche as a popular small-batch ice cream shop. RELATED: Shake Shack opens third San Diego stop at Carmel Valley's One Paseo development"Designed in collaboration with Andee Hess of Portland-based Osmose Design, the new scoop shop features custom design details that recall a modern-day mercantile, offering a welcoming setting to gather within One Paseo," the company said in a release. "A large exterior hand-painted mural of an ice cream cone incorporates Salt & Straw’s signature striped motif — a nod to the company’s origins as a red-and-white striped ice cream cart."In San Diego, customers can find custom local flavors such as Peanut Butter Stout with Chocolate Chicharrón featuring Belching Beaver Brewery’s peanut butter milk stout, and James Coffee and Bourbon featuring coffee from local roasters James Coffee Co.At One Paseo, the shop will debut two new dairy-free flavors: Freckled Mint TCHO-colate Chip and Dandelion Chocolate Hazelnut Cookies & Cream. As if that wasn't enough for customers to choose from, a special menu of themed flavors will rotate monthly. In March, their “The Flavor Vault” will include Pots of Gold & Rainbows, Wild-Foraged Berry Slab Pie, Smoked Sea Salt & Chocolate Crack, Cupcake Royale’s Salted Caramel Cupcake and Silencio Black Tea & Coconut Stracciatella. The One Paseo shop is located at 3705 Caminito Court, Suite 0580, and will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., daily. 1953

Businesses may be reopening, but they're still struggling to pay their rent.About 40% of major retailers didn't pay their rent in May, according to numbers from data firm Datex Property Solutions. Some companies are warning they won't be able to pay rent for months. Starbucks for example is asking for landlords to adjust lease terms and rent for at least 12 months. It's an even worse situation for some small businesses.“I would think landlords ordinarily are not that sympathetic, right, because they can get somebody else to pay the bill,” said Jack Strauss, an economics expert and professor at the University of Denver. “In this case, a landlord is foolish to ignore the struggling small business.”Strauss says it will be difficult for landlords to find a new tenant quickly, so they have an incentive to delay or partially reduce rent.Businesses in malls are getting hit especially hard. The country's latest mall owner recently sued Gap over three months of unpaid rent.“Being sued kind of makes sense by the landlord to take a heavy hand, but at the same time, it doesn't make sense because they're going to have a lot of, they're potentially going to have a lot of empty spaces,” said Strauss.Punchbowl Social, a national restaurant and entertainment spot just closed one location in the Denver area and one in the Chicago area, acknowledging that landlords are trying to ensure the success of their business. But the CEO says, "landlords cannot expect to maintain status quo economic terms that were negotiated in pre-pandemic times."Strauss agrees with that. He thinks landlords should provide one-year temporary rent reductions to businesses, just like many workers are taking pay reductions right now.He says after a year, the landlords and businesses can renegotiate their rent. 1799

Blake Cooper of the Santa Monica Police Department, but details were not immediately available. The chase started about 6:15 p.m. Friday, the Los Angeles Police Department said. It was not immediately clear where the chase began. The driver had a woman with him at the beginning of the pursuit, but she got out, according to broadcast reports. 692

Carnival Cruise Line announced Thursday that most of its remaining US-based cruises for 2020 have been canceled due to coronavirus concerns. The cruise line canceled all cruises originating from US ports except for those leaving Miami and Port Carnival during November and December. Carnival said Thursday that it’s possible all remaining cruises in the US will be canceled amid the pandemic.“As we have said throughout this pause, our return to operations will be gradual and phased in. And while we are not making any presumptions, once cruising is allowed, we will center our initial start-up from the homeports of Miami and Port Canaveral,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “The health and safety of our guests, crew and communities we serve remain the cornerstone of our plans and decisions. The patience and support of our guests and travel agent partners have been a huge motivation to our team as we have worked through this unprecedented situation and we are dedicated to getting back to operations when the time is right.”Anyone with a Carnival cruise reservation in 2020 has the ability to voluntarily cancel their reservation, which includes a combination future cruise credit and onboard credit, or a full refund.Late Wednesday, the CDC extended a no-sail order through October 31 on all cruises in US waters carrying 250 or more passengers. The CDC said it has identified at least 3,689 coronavirus-related illnesses, and 41 associated deaths, although the CDC cautions these figures are likely an underestimate.“On cruise ships, passengers and crew share spaces that are more crowded than most urban settings,” the CDC said. 1669
