SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 4.9-magnitude earthquake and several smaller shakeups recorded in Imperial County on Wednesday were reportedly felt in San Diego County.The swarm of earthquakes was centered around the Westmorland area. While many of the smaller quakes were recorded between 2.5- and 3.7-magnitude, about 80 earthquakes measuring at least 2.5-magnitude were recorded between 4 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.The largest earthquake as of 5:45 p.m. registered at 4.9-magnitude, according to the agency's latest earthquakes map.Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones tweeted that Wednesday's series of earthquakes was one of the largest swarms Imperial Valley has seen, adding that the area is historically active in swarms."The swarm happening now south of the Salton Sea, near Westmoreland is over 30 km south of the end of the San Andreas," Jones tweeted. "It is in the Brawley seismic zone, a common source of swarms. So far largest is M4.4. Too far from the San Andreas to change the probability of a quake on it." 1004

The culprit was the end piece that plugs into the computer. Getting it repaired could have cost him between and 0, so Warth tried to fix it himself - and failed.In early September, Warth saw a notice for a fixit clinic at a Goodwill store in Serra Mesa, organized by the nonprofit Zero Waste San Diego. For the last four years, the group has been offering free, monthly clinics to help fix the broken: from blenders and barbecues, to lamps and fans.Fixit volunteer Michael Gleason joined the group after he retired. "When we fix someone's lamp and it lights up and the owner's face lights up.  That's the reward for me," said Gleason.He says his success rate is about 50%. 1036

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --  A federal judge ordered that the Trump administration reinstate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival program, also known as DACA. The DACA program - which protects nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children from being deported. While the decision has been made, it won't be an easy road for the people involved. The restart is delayed until August 23, to allow the government time to appeal Judge John Bates' decision.  For Dreamers like Ali Torabi, Friday's win is just the latest in the political tug of war.RELATED: San Diego Dreamers heading to the Capitol“I was preparing for, in the next four days, the complete opposite," Torabi said. He believed he might be deported. "I was actually working on my med school applications, and I was like, ‘I need to get my things together now.’”Torabi is a DACA student from Iran and a 22-year resident of San Diego.  He said Judge Bates' decision is huge for the undocumented immigrants protected by the program. But being in constant limbo can be emotionally draining. "Having this back and forth, where one day we don’t know if we’ll have any protection and were up to be potentially deported or detained, to telling us, well yea we’ll keep the protections...it’s difficult," he said. "I’m not going to lie to you, it’s emotionally difficult.”It isn't over yet. Judge Bates ruling could conflict with another decision on the program -  expected to be ruled on by a federal judge in Texas by as early as next week.The Texas Attorney General calls the program unconstitutional because it came from an executive order.“It invites future presidents to ignore the law, ignore the will of the people, and set their own policies on the second amendment, privacy rights, drug laws, or any other important issues debated in Congress," said Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Torabi said he has hope. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Exercise has been one of the most effective stress relievers during the pandemic, but it has also been a challenge for some people to find a way to do it. That's where Mike Cothrine comes in. He started Mike's Fit Family about eight years ago to teach teachers free of charge about how to achieve a healthy body and healthy mind."A lot of these ladies had never exercised before in their life," he says. "A lot of them were just happy that somebody cared about them, cared enough to take care of them the way they take care of so many."The idea is to get teachers moving so they can do the same for their students.Mike says, "They started to really feel the power, and started feeling themselves and that energy translated to the kids."Preschool teacher Sofia Martinez who teaches at VIP Village Preschool in Imperial Beach has lived those positive effects."My stress levels were lower, it helped me sleep at night," and she says, "I went down from a size 12 to a size 6."Sofia says the kids love the workouts and while they catch on quickly, they're not the only ones."We saw the effects on the children in the classroom and then it was starting to trickle into the homes and the moms wanted to join," she says.Mike's approach is holistic. He also teaches stress relief and nutrition. When you meet him it becomes immediately clear why he's effective. He exudes energy and a half. He says his inspiration comes from his childhood in St. Louis. What his family lacked in means, they made up for in love. So with his fitness background, he wanted to give back to those who also lack the means.He says, "That's the core value of myself and my team, we love you up."Mike was traveling across San Diego county helping 20 different school district groups when the pandemic hit. So, in his can-do fashion, he took his classes virtual. Forty live virtual classes a week from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. He asks those who can to pay so he can continue to give to others who can't. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Surfrider Foundation released its annual Clean Water Report Friday, detailing the measures the organization has taken to improve water quality in San Diego County and quell sewage contamination of local shorelines. The report gives an update on the organization's Blue Water Task Force as well as analysis of water quality case studies in Depoe Bay, Oregon; Oahu, Hawaii; Palm Beach County, Florida; and San Diego. The Blue Water Task Force, Surfrider's volunteer water testing group, has increased its number of water tests by at least 12 percent each of the past seven years, according to the report. Task force volunteers conducted 6,826 water quality tests across the country in 2018. Last year, the Surfrider San Diego chapter's Blue Water Task Force focused primarily on ending sewage runoff into the Tijuana River, which subsequently flows into the Pacific Ocean and affects the county's beaches and coastline. According to the report, sewage contamination caused closures of Imperial Beach's shoreline for roughly half of each year from 2015 to 2017. In 2018, Surfrider San Diego established Blue Water Task Force testing labs in Imperial Beach, Coronado and at the chapter's office west of Mira Mesa to improve local water testing efforts. According to the report, the organization's volunteers collect and test water samples each Thursday along the shoreline from Imperial Beach to Pacific Beach. ``In areas like San Diego, California, where communities are impacted year-round by cross-border water pollution ... Surfrider's work to protect clean water is more critical than ever,'' said Mara Dias, the organization's water quality manager. ``Our chapters are tackling regional water quality issues by testing for pollution, building ocean friendly solutions, and informing the public where it's safe to surf, swim and play in the ocean." Surfrider San Diego filed a lawsuit against the U.S. section of the International Boundary and Water Commission last year, alleging that the body has repeatedly violated the Clean Water Act and put the health and safety of local residents in jeopardy by improperly managing the pollution from the Tijuana River. The cities of Imperial Beach and Chula Vista and the Port of San Diego have joined Surfrider's lawsuit, while the city of San Diego and California Attorney General Xavier Becerra have filed a similar suit against the IBWC.
