House Democrats, along with four Republicans and the only independent member of Congress, voted to condemn President Donald Trump's comments telling four progressive Democrats to "go back" to their home countries. The resolution was approved by a 240-187 margin. The Republicans breaking from party ranks were Will Heard of Texas, Fred Upton of Michigan, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and Susan Brooks of Indiana. Independent Rep. Justin Amash also voted along with the Democratic majority. Amash recently left the Republican party, and has been a vocal Trump critic.The vote did not come without controversy. During House Speaker's Nancy Pelosi's House speech on the resolution, Republicans objected by saying that her comments violated the House's rules on decorum. Republicans then called for a vote to strike Pelosi's comments from the record. With Democrats holding the majority, the motion to strike her comments was defeated. Later during the debate, ex presidential candidate Eric Swalwell, a California Democrat, drew controversy by discussing comments made by Trump referring to "s---hole countries." GAITHERSBURG, Md. -- Under the fluorescent lights, inside a series of labs, researchers believe they may have cracked the code to create a vaccine for the new coronavirus, which has officially named COVID-19.“It’s rapidly evolving,” said Dr. Gregory Glenn, president of research and development at the Maryland-based company Novavax. “As a company, we are very invested in looking at how to protect people against infectious diseases.”Novavax is one of several pharmaceutical companies around the world, racing to develop a vaccine for the strain of the coronavirus, which recently emerged in Wuhan, China.“We have to puzzle-solve with vaccines,” Dr. Glenn said. “We think about: what do we want to have the immune response to target? Because that should block the infection and stop the illness and that’s the goal here.”He showed a three-dimensional computerized depiction of what the virus looks like.“The coronavirus – corona being ‘crown’ – has spikes,” he said. “Those spikes have a very important function. They let the virus bind to the human cell and then those spikes act as a syringe to inject genetic material into the human cell.”A vaccine would potentially stop that process, thereby protecting a person from the coronavirus.“We have the gene, we have the vaccine, we’re going to move it into animal testing shortly,” Dr. Glenn said. “Our goal is in late spring to be testing in humans.”It normally takes about 18 months to get human trials started on a vaccine. This shorter time frame is nothing new for the company; they developed an Ebola vaccine within 90 days ready for testing – but there’s a catch.It can take years for a vaccine to get approved, but under dire circumstances sometimes they can be used through something called “expanded access” or “compassionate use” – meaning, the vaccine can be used in humans, before it’s fully licensed.“That happened with Ebola – they didn’t have a licensed vaccine, but they were able to use it under ‘compassionate use,’ they developed evidence that it was working,” Dr. Glenn said.As for a fully approved coronavirus vaccine, experts say that would take longer.“A vaccine in a year would be record-setting time, but not in time to probably have much impact for this disease outbreak,” said Dr. Eric Toner with the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.However, if the coronavirus sticks around or comes back stronger in a second wave of the disease, Dr. Glenn said they want to be ready.“We know time is of the essence here,” he said.So far, approximately 73,000 people have been infected and more than 1,800 people have died from the most recent strain of the coronavirus. 2653

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A Florida man is accused of repeatedly cutting brakes on electric scooters. The Fort Lauderdale Police Department has been investigating the vandalism of more than 140 scooters in the city since April. Police say a majority of the incidents occurred near the 1200 block of East Broward Boulevard and all included severed brake lines. On Sunday, police say they arrested a suspect, 59-year-old Randall Williams, who was caught in the act of tampering with several scooters. He's now being charged with criminal mischief, a 3rd degree felony. 577

Fred "Curly" Neal, a Harlem Globetrotters icon who played in more than 6,000 games, has died, the team announced Thursday. He was 77. Neal played in 97 countries. On Feb. 15, 2008, Curly became just the fifth Globetrotter to have his jersey number retired, according to the team."Between 1963 and 1985 - before the internet and cable television really existed-it was Curly Neal and the Harlem Globetrotters who first introduced the sport of basketball to millions of people around the world for the first time," the Globetrotters tweeted. "It was Curly's magical ball-handling, shooting, charismatic smile and iconic bald head, in more than 6,000 games in 97 countries, that made them start to play and fall in love with the game."Globetrotters General Manager Jeff Munn called Neal "one of the most genuine human beings the world has ever known."“Curly’s basketball skill was unrivaled by most," Munn said.
