SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A University City man is hoping to warn others after someone with a BB gun shot him during his daily jog.On Tuesday, 70-year-old Taurone was nearing the end of his daily three-mile jog northbound on University Town Center Drive just after 6 p.m."Very calm, enjoying the evening. Hardly any traffic out in the neighborhood," said Taurone. On the sidewalk near the Renaissance Towne Center, his calm jog was suddenly interrupted by pain."Jogging along and felt a sharp sting in the lower portion or my chin, so I stopped. It felt like an extremely large pimple. I was pushing on it, and something round and hard came out of my skin fell onto the ground," said Taurone.A stunned Taurone, who didn't have his glasses, didn't look for the apparent BB pellet."When I realized I what it was, and that I had been shot, I was very angry," said Taurone.Taurone, who was shot on the right side of his face, believes the shot came from the shopping center area. He briefly scoured the area but didn't see anyone. Bleeding from his chin, he jogged home. He's doing fine now, but he's still upset."If the shot had been 6 to 8 inches higher, it would have hit me in the eye," said Taurone.Taurone has no clue about a motive, but he knows he was the intended target."Makes sense because I was the only moving target in the area," said Taurone.Taurone has been interviewed by police, who told him they haven't received reports of similar incidents in the area. He's now worried about what may happen next, because of the boldness of the attack. It was still light out, and while the traffic was light at the time, it remains a busy area."If not caught, he or she could do it to other people and cause more even harm," said Taurone.Anyone with information on the case is asked to call San Diego Police at 619-531-2000. 1826

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After 27 years, Mysterious Galaxy, a popular sci-fi bookstore in the Clairemont area, may have to close its doors. In a post on the store's website, the owners say they are looking for a buyer to take over the store on Balboa Avenue and move it, as their lease expires in 60 days. "It is with heavy hearts that we share that unless a new buyer and new location are found immediately, Mysterious Galaxy will be forced to close its doors," reads the post.Manager Kelly Orazi says it's "devastating" to see the store shut down.RELATED: Sears, Kmart stores slated for closure in months ahead, company says"We're a hub for people who love books," she says. "(People) Who love reading, who love writing. It's really something special."If it closes, Mysterious Galaxy will join a handful of other small, locally-owned bookstores to close recently in San Diego. In 2018, Villainous Lair shut its doors, as did the Adams Avenue Bookstore. And Lhooq Books in Carlsbad may do the same, as that location is facing eviction. But, on the whole, the independent bookstore industry is thriving across America.RELATED: San Diego area Forever 21 stores may close under Chapter 11According to the American Booksellers Association, the number of independent bookstores has gone up every year for the last decade, even as overall retail sales are down. Experts say it's because shoppers are looking for a more personal, intimate experience than what they can get online or at a major retail chain. That's what Diesel Bookstore is hoping to capitalize on. That store just opened at the end of October in the Del Mar Highlands mall."We offer bestsellers, but we also offer a curated selection of books in every subject manner," says Manager Iris Halperin. "People want an experience that's different, that's fun, that's unique. That's what Diesel brings."RELATED: Poway's 'Disneyland for discount hunters' to close next yearHalperin says the goal for the store can be summed up in a quote that the store's owner often references: "A book store is part school, part party, part counseling center and part creative workshop. It's street theater at its best. It is fun, moving, challenging, complex, and deeply rewarding work."Orazi agrees and is hoping there's still time for a plot twist that will keep Mysterious Galaxy open."We're looking for an owner that can come in, buy the bookstore, support the bookstore, find a new location for us or help us find a new location, and, hopefully, we'll be able to continue providing books and bringing magic to people for years to come. 2577

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A state review board will decide Tuesday whether to grant parole to a former skateboarding star from Carlsbad who has spent nearly three decades behind bars for a brutal rape and murder.Mark “Gator” Rogowski was a world champion skateboarder in the 1980’s who drew comparisons to Tony Hawk. He parlayed his fame into endorsements and promotional videos until he entered a guilty plea to the 1991 rape and murder of Jessica Bergsten, whose body was found buried in the desert.“This was a horrific, heinous, monstrous crime by an individual who really doesn’t want to admit that he took out transferred rage on another innocent individual,” said Deputy District Attorney Richard Sachs, who will represent the state at Tuesday’s hearing.Rogowski was denied parole in 2011 and 2016, but his case was granted another review ahead of schedule, Sachs said. The parole board will determine if Rogowski remains a threat to the community based on a psychological assessment and other factors. In a promotional video by the prison rehabilitation non-profit Getting Out by Going In (GOGI), Rogowski said he’s taken accountability for the crime and found a higher power.“My identity as a man was skewed. I thought what it meant to be a man was to be a womanizer, to have a lot of relationships,” he said.In 1991, the former skateboarding celebrity invited Bergsten to his Carlsbad apartment. Bergsten was a friend of the girl who had just dumped Rogowski. In a fit of what he called “misplaced revenge,” Rogowski clubbed the young woman over the head, cut her clothes off with scissors and sexually assaulted her for hours. When she screamed for help, Rogowski covered her with a surfboard bag and strangled her through it. He then drove two hours into the desert and buried her naked body in a shallow grave.“Certain crimes are so horrible they shock the conscience and this is one of them,” Sachs said.Sachs said prosecutors will strongly oppose parole on public safety grounds, although he acknowledged he could not predict the board's decision. "We never know how they’re going to view somebody," he said.If the board grants parole, he said the DA’s office will appeal the decision to Governor Gavin Newsom. 2224

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A shark advisory is being issued Tuesday after witnesses reported seeing a five-foot-long shark near Black's Beach. According to Mónica Mu?oz with San Diego Fire-Rescue, the advisory is in place from the Mushroom House north to Bathtub Rock, also known as Flat Rock. “Some witnesses reported seeing a shark of about five feet in length which does not reach the threshold of a significant threat. However, the number of witnesses and the feeding behavior observed influenced the lifeguards’ decision to issue the advisory,” Mu?oz said. Just after 12:30 p.m., a group of 25 surfers got out of the water at Black's Beach after reportedly seeing a shark eating a sea lion. Another group of people reported similar information to a lifeguard. In the same area, Mu?oz says lifeguards witnessed a large sea lion eating a fish. The department says there were either two separate sightings in the area, or witnesses all saw a sea lion feeding on a fish, but mistook it for a shark. “We are acting out of an abundance of caution,” Mu?oz added. Lifeguards are conducting active patrols in the area to let people know what witnesses saw. Mu?oz says lifeguards are advising against water activity; however, the water is not closed to people who choose to enter. Signs will also be posted in the area. 1316

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego psychiatrist no longer has a license after authorities say he was intoxicated while practicing.According to the Medical Board of California, Marco Antonio Chavez’s license was suspended following an investigation. The investigation began after authorities say a patient reported that Chavez sent him a box of medication in 2017 that contained an empty vodka bottle.During one of several office visits, an investigator said Chavez appeared to be intoxicated.Documents show that Chavez told the investigator that his mother gave him a “Mexican home remedy to stop his drinking” which consisted of vodka and cloves. At a hearing, Chaves said he had two of the drinks that morning.During the visit, the investigator told Chavez he believed he was “so intoxicated that he could not practice medicine” and told two patients in the waiting room to go home.A test conducted by a San Diego Police officer shows that Chavez had a blood alcohol level of .216. Authorities say Chavez’s license was suspended on May 7. 1044
