BALTIMORE — The U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops, which is meeting in Baltimore this week, will now face a lawsuit.It's being filed today by six people who have accused Catholic priests of sexual abuse. The group is hoping this lawsuit will prevent bishops from keeping cases of abuse secret. On Wednesday in Baltimore, sexual abuse survivors and their attorneys, along with victims advocates, will announce the details of the lawsuit. The suit names the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops for hiding the known histories and identities of the accused clergy members from the public, parishioners and law enforcement.They're demanding the release of files that would help them prove their allegations that some bishops were complicit in covering up the abuse and protecting priests. They also want a full disclosure of all of the known offenders from the nearly 200 dioceses across the country.Six survivors from California, Illinois, Minnesota, New York and Pennsylvania will talk Wednesday about why they filed the suit together and why they're doing it now. Later Wednesday afternoon, Loyola University Maryland will also hold a public forum to talk about the sex abuse crisis in the Catholic Church. 1254

Beyond the beaches of the world, lies the potential for oceans of energy."I'm very excited about this because it's a very renewable energy-based technology,” said Professor Bruce Logan of Penn State University.Logan and university researchers recently created a device that removes salt from seawater in a cheaper way, allowing that water to then be used to create a renewable form of hydrogen fuel.“There's a lot of interest in renewable hydrogen,” Logan said. “Most of the hydrogen made today is made from fossil fuels, and so, we're interested in making that hydrogen from water.”That involves splitting water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen. The problem? Seawater also has salt, which needs to be removed first and that’s expensive to do.However, the “seawater electrolyzer” that Logan and his team worked on takes care of that issue cheaply by using a special membrane and without requiring expensive desalination plants. The findings were recently published in the Journal of Energy and Environmental Science.“Hydrogen is a great fuel,” he said. “It's been examined as a fuel for many decades now.”About 97 percent of all the water on earth is in the ocean, which means if it could be used efficiently to make hydrogen fuel, it could be a game-changer.“As we look to de-carbonize our fossil fuel infrastructure, we also can use it primarily for heavy-duty vehicles,” Logan said. “Airbus is looking to actually make airplanes that fly on hydrogen.”For now, though, their device would need to be scaled-up to a much larger version.“There are many nations and companies and nations across the world looking to do this. Behind every stitch and each piece of fabric on the dolls put on display in Washington D.C., there’s a real face and a real story.Activist Marta Perez-Garcia is the creator of the display, and she hopes it will open the public’s eyes to the realities surrounding domestic violence.“I think, because I have too many people around me and I really saw it for so long, I needed to do something about it,” Perez-Garcia says.Perez-Garcia grew up in Puerto Rico and says she regularly witnessed women being abused. She says after moving to the mainland U.S., those stories didn’t stop."It's something that is in the media, that you see that is very close to home,” she says."One in 3 women are survivors of domestic violence and or sexual assault,” says Bakht Arif, who works with abuse survivors. “And that is a lot of people.Arif works with abuse survivors for a non-profit project in Washington D.C. She believes the doll display is one way to grab people's attention but says the conversation should go far beyond this.“Policy is important; legislation is important,” Arif says. “And we will be cheering and protesting for it and cheering for anyone who supports it and brings light to the issue.”The exhibit at the Franklin Reeves building in Washington D.C. was on display throughout the month of October to promote awareness.  But Perez-Garcia says the real voices for change will come from voters in November. "As society, we have to do something about this issue,” she says. “So, if it's to really take people in power to really make the right decisions against domestic violence, of course we have to do that.” 1631
