Is it an addictive drug, or a way to actually overcome addiction? The FDA is considering regulating an herbal drug called Kratom. But a group of doctors is pushing back, saying it's part of the solution not part of the problem. They may be color coded, but for Catherine Nieves, the liquid she's pouring in her cups are more than trendy new drinks. She says what's inside them, changed her life."I was homeless and a drug addict who lost custody of my oldest child," Nieves says.Nieves owns a store and prepares drinks made with Kratom, a coffee-like herb. After a C-section a few years back, she started taking Kratom for pain, instead of the addictive opioid Percocet her doctor prescribed."It made the pain just as manageable," Nieves says. "But it was healthier for me mentally just to not get back in the habit with pills when it was something that I was already very sensitive to.But the FDA describes Kratom differently, calling it dangerously addictive, and similar to narcotics like opioids with respect to addiction and death."Yes they interact similar with opioid receptors in the body but the effects are very different," says Oliver Grundmann Ph.D. with the University of Florida.Dr. Grundmann is one of several doctors publicly rejecting the FDA's position on Kratom. He says it doesn't impact breathing the way opioids do, so that lessens the chance of an overdose. And he says the FDA is wrong to link it to 44 deaths in the last decade."So we are not saying that Kratom doesn't have potential adverse effects," Dr. Grundmann says. "But is it positively linked to these deaths? We don't think so."Grundmann believes it should be regulated by the FDA but not as a narcotic."What is at the heart of all of this is we want to consumers to be protected and we want them to have quality products," Grundmann."I have children I have a great life that I've made for myself it's just entirely too much to possibly jeopardize," Nieves says.Nieves wants people who are in her situation to see a safer way out.Nieves says, "It seems like a bottomless hole, addiction. It's a yearbook controversy, which has an Arizona charter school issuing an apology to parents Monday night.Parents who just received the yearbook from Sonoran Science Academy in Peoria, Arizona were in disbelief after seeing a page in which a student with a Muslim first name was voted "most likely to bomb the U.S."Bree Brown has an 11-year-old daughter at the school and said her daughter showed her the post over the weekend and appeared disturbed by it."I looked down and read, most likely to bomb the U.S. and I just sat there for a second and thought, 'No way. This is not happening,'" Brown said."I thought it was a joke, I didn't believe her at first," added her husband, Kian Brown.The parents said they wondered how something like that could have made it to the printer and been published with no oversight from school administrators."It was missed. There's a faculty advisor in charge of the yearbook. They did not catch it," said Matthew Benson, a spokesman for the Sonoran Science Academy.The parents also questioned other posts in the yearbook. It was all part of a survey school staff said they gave the students.Questions included "voted most likely to..." and  "favorite memory..." — the kind of questions you see in every yearbook, almost a rite of passage for the graduating class.In this case, school officials said there was no vote. Students filled in the blanks themselves, hence the 8th grader himself wrote in the words "most likely to bomb the U.S."Regardless, the Browns said they felt faculty should have caught that before the book made it to the printer.Other posts that caught their eye included a student "voted most likely to 'boonk' from a gang member."Kian Brown said he looked up the word and found it to mean "steal."Another student voted "most likely to be an internet scammer," and one student who stated their favorite memory as "being stabbed with a pencil.""That was an actual occurrence that happened at the school. Police were called. It wasn't funny," Bree Brown saidSchool officials said they are investigating the incident and put out the following statement:Statement from Principal Deb Hofmeier:"On Friday night, I became aware of an inappropriate entry included with the 2017-18 yearbook in which a student self-designated they were ‘Voted Most Likely to Bomb the U.S.’ To be clear, there was no class vote. Each student self-selected a superlative for himself or herself. After speaking with the student and the student’s parents, it is apparent the comment was a misguided attempt at humor. There was absolutely no malicious intent on the part of the student.Regardless, our entire administrative team takes this seriously. The comment should have been caught and removed during the editing process before the yearbook was published. Our school is investigating how this incident occurred, and has already taken disciplinary action against the faculty adviser in charge of the yearbook. Going forward, we will be instituting a more stringent review process to ensure this cannot happen again.In the meantime, we have reached out to each of our Sonoran Science Academy-Peoria families to express our deep regret regarding this incident. We are also collecting yearbooks from students who had already received them, and will have a new, edited batch printed and distributed at no additional charge to families. It has been 11 years since the federal minimum wage has increased, and Congress is weighing if now is the time to give minimum wage employees a raise.One economist cautions that now might not be the best time.“The big problem then is if you fundamentally raise the cost of their labor by raising the federal minimum wage in states where that will have an impact, then you’re further increasing the businesses’ cost,” said Ryan Bourne, economist from the Kato Institute. “Which is likely to make more businesses fail and actually result in fewer jobs being available for low-wage workers.”According to the Cato Institute, 29 states and the District of Columbia have minimum wages that are above the federal minimum of .25.“This seems to be a particularly bad time to raise the cost of hiring people by having a higher hourly wage rate,” Bourne said. “It might deter some of the adjustment we need to live with this virus.”But fellow economist Ben Zipperer of the Economic Policy Institute disagrees with Bourne’s assessment.“That kind of concern has always been raised when we’re talking about the minimum wage, and it doesn’t seem to actually play out in reality,” Zipperer said.Zipperer argues that raising the minimum wage could boost economic activity. He added that a minimum wage hike, while not a panacea, would put the economy in the right direction.“Giving people more money to have more money to spend, that’s probably one of the most effective policies to have during a kind of depression,” he said. 1519
