SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A dream became reality for a San Diego woman, but not in a good way. Jenna Evans says she swallowed her engagement ring in her sleep.Tuesday night, Evans dreamed that she and her fiance, Bobby, were facing off with "bad guys" on a high-speed train. During the struggle, Bobby told Evans that she had to swallow her engagement ring to protect it. So she did. Not just in her dream, but in real life. She woke to find the ring clean off her finger. "When I woke up and it was not on my hand, I knew exactly where it was," Evans said. "It was in my stomach."The next morning, Evans and her future husband went to Urgent Care, where they saw her X-rays. Her ring was clearly nestled right in her stomach.A gastroenterologist, however, suggested it would not be best to let nature run its course. Doctors recommended an upper endoscopy to remove her beloved bling."I was really happy because I don't know if I can look at it and appreciate it in the same way, if I had to search for it," Evans chuckled.At this point, Evans says she could feel the ring in her stomach and it was starting to become painful.Doctors safely removed the ring from her intestines and returned the jewelry to Evans — well, to Bobby for safe keeping, at least. Bobby eventually gave Evans her ring back."I feel very grateful that I got it back, and that this is a happy and funny story," Evans said. It was a crazy adventure that gave new meaning to "A Sparkling bride, inside and out."She says she now takes the ring off when going to sleep.The couple will get married in Evans' home state of Texas, hopefully with the ring in hand, next May. 1641
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 14-year-old teen has been arrested and charged with a hate crime after punching a Rabbi near a University City synagogue, police say.San Diego Police said Rabbi Yonatan Halevy, of the Shiviti Congregation, was walking near the synagogue located near 3200 Governor Drive on Oct. 10, when he was punched by the teenager. The teen reportedly yelled racial slurs during the attack and fled the location, police added. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two robberies were reported within a couple of hours of each other early Sunday morning near San Diego State University, police said.Around 2 a.m. Sunday, a person told police five or six men had stolen cell phones from a group of people on Prosperity Lane near Faber Way, San Diego police Officer Sarah Foster said.A little more than two hours later, at about 4:15 a.m., someone flagged down an officer on Rockford Drive near Pontiac Street to report they had been robbed at gunpoint, Foster said.PHOTOS: ,000 reward offered in string of Wells Fargo Bank robberiesThere was no information on what was stolen. The victim from the second incident told police three suspects in the robbery fled in a white Honda, Foster said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A former San Diego Sheriff's Department Captain accused of operating an illegal firearms trafficking business was arrested Friday.Former SDSO Capt. Marco Garmo is accused of operating the illegal firearms trafficking business, at times from his office at Rancho San Diego Station, authorities say. The indictment also accuses a fellow Sheriff's deputy, Lt. Fred Magana, prominent San Diego jeweler Leo Hamel, firearms dealer Giovanni Tilotta, and El Cajon resident Waiel Anton with aiding the Captain's business.Officials say Garmo was operating the illegal business during his entire tenure as Captain at the Rancho San Diego Station. The 27-year veteran of the department, who retired in September, is accused of beginning the business for profit and to gain future donors for an anticipated campaign for San Diego County Sheriff.RELATED: San Diego Sheriff's captain on leave during criminal investigationFriday morning, Magana and Hamel both plead guilty to charges including engaging in the business of dealing in firearms without a license, false statement in acquisition of a firearm, and conducting firearms transaction in violation of state law.Both admitted to aiding Garmo's business by making "straw purchases" of firearms, or purchases of firearms on behalf of someone else. The pair also admitted to creating false records to conceal those purchases, and offering to promote Garmo's weapons. As part of his plea, Hamel admitted to buying a variety of handguns from Garmo and making purchases in which Garmo would falsely report that he had acquired the guns for himself, not Hamel. The local jeweler also admitted to acquiring several firearms from Garmo without proper documentation and planning a false paper trail.Hamel must forfeit more than 200 firearms and 100,000 rounds of ammunition seized during a February 2019 raid.RELATED: FBI, ATF raid home, businesses of prominent San Diego jeweler Leo HamelMagana admitted to straw purchasing a pair of "off-roster" firearms, which are guns made available for law enforcement but not the public, for Hamel at Garmo's direction and advertising Garmo's firearms to potential customers.Officials say Anton helped buyers apply for concealed carry permits as part of his "consulting" business and received money to give buyers early appointments and avoid the backlog of other applicants. Anton is charged with also giving "kickbacks" to Garmo for referrals.Investigators accuse Tilotta, the owner of Honey Badger Firearms, with organizing Garmo's straw purchases and submitting false firearms records. While law enforcement officers are allowed to resell off roster guns in certain instances, Garmo was reportedly warned by the ATF that excessive resales for profit could violate federal law. Officials say Garmo acquired about 146 firearms between March 2013 and February 2019 and sold or transferred 104 of them.Investigators also accused Garmo of lying about tipping off a cousin, who was a partner in an illegal marijuana dispensary called Campo Greens, of an impending warrant search he had received for the business. The tip off allowed the business to clear any products or cash before authorities arrived.Sheriff Bill Gore said in a statement Friday that Garmo's actions do not represent the department:"In the spring of 2017, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department learned an employee was possibly involved in misconduct. Upon confirming the information and determining the misconduct potentially involved criminal activity, the Sheriff's Department requested an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The FBI and ATF conducted a thorough investigation and the United States Attorney's Office, Southern District of California, issued indictments on one current Sheriff's employee and one former employee. I want to thank our federal law enforcement partners for their diligence on this case, and I have the utmost confidence in the criminal justice system.Acts such as these are a violation of public trust and tarnish the reputation of law enforcement. I am disappointed by the actions of these two individuals, as they do not reflect the values of this department and its thousands of trustworthy, hard-working employees. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 98-year-old woman is being evicted from her Ocean Beach home after living there for nearly three decades. Betty Morse moved into her tiny Ocean Beach cottage back in the late 1980’s. After her husband died, she needed a place she could afford. “I was by myself, but I managed,” Morse said. “I could walk to work.” Morse said the rent was about 0 when she moved in. “It was a beautiful place to live because you could walk to the beach and watch the sunset,” she said. This little place by the beach that fits her so well was supposed to be her last stop. "See, I figured I'd lived a wonderful life in Ocean Beach, and I want to live and die here, you know, because I feel so comfortable here,” Morse said. “It's my little house, and it's all I know.” Morse said this year she was asked to sign a new rental agreement. Her family had some disagreements with a couple of changes made by the landlord: one was a no-smoking addendum. Morse told 10News after decades of being a smoker at 98-years-old, she quit so she could stay in the home. Despite her efforts, she said after the attorneys went back and forth a few times, she received a 90-day-notice in July terminating her tenancy. Morse doesn't know what to do if she’s forced to leave. “I don’t know who will rent to me because in two months I’ll be 99 and they are not going to be happy to rent an apartment,” she said. During her 30 years at the property, Morse said she never had a problem with the rental. A fixture in the neighborhood, she knows San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and his mother. "She said, 'Kevin, I want a picture of Betty with you' and he said 'OK mom,'” she said. “He came over to the step and she said, 'She's very unsteady on her feet, Kevin, don't let her fall.'" Morse said her rent was always paid on time, a trait she picked up from the one man she ever loved. "Before he died, when he was in the ICU, he had a tube, but he wrote, don't forget to pay the rent.” A model tenant, Morse is using Section 8 housing assistance to help cover her rent. According to the termination notice she showed to 10News, the owner is electing to opt out of the Section 8 program and not renew the lease. It states the owner will be conducting substantial renovations to the unit and following the renovations the owner desires to rent the unit at a higher rental value, being that of the market rate value. The notice states the owner will be opting out of Section 8 entirely."They clearly state on their 90-day notice that their just cause is they don't want to comply with Section 8,” said Pamela Macias with San Diego County Evictions. Macias is working with Morse and her family to try and keep her in the home. "She's willing to pay market rent and just for no reason at all they want her out,” Macias said. Morse does have children, and instead of being out on the street she could move in with one of them. However, nearing the century mark she worries about being a burden.“I don't want to be in a nursing home either,” she said. “I still want to be independent.” The 90-day-notice has expired and Morse is still living in the property. The property owner filed an unlawful detainer, which is basically an eviction lawsuit. Team 10 contacted the owners of the property; they declined to comment due to pending litigation. Housing Assistance in San Diego The San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) states that more than 6,000 landlords are participating in the rental assistance program. Most landlords don’t usually stop participating in the program, but it does happen, according to the commission. They say the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Rental Assistance program includes options to meet the needs of both landlords and tenants. Landlords can increase rents for rental-assistance tenants as they would for market-rate tenants as long as 60 days’ notice is provided to the rental assistance tenants and the new rent is determined to be reasonable.According to SDHC, to evaluate the reasonableness of the rent it compares the requested rent to the rents on other units on the premises with tenants who do not receive rental assistance. Right now, landlords are not required to accept tenants who receive Section 8 rental assistance. However, in August 2019 a new amendment to San Diego’s source of income ordinance will prevent landlords from declining a tenant based only on the household receiving rental assistance. “It opens large opportunities for our clients to receive assistance and utilize their voucher in the City of San Diego,” said Carrie Leverett, director of the SDHC rental assistance department. “It allows our clients to maintain affordable housing and find affordable housing. San Diego’s Mayor and Housing A spokesperson for San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer says he and his staff have gotten to know Betty through the years because her home is near the staging area of the Ocean Beach Holiday Parade.
