HANGZHOU, July 4 (Xinhua) -- A new regular direct passenger sea route between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan was officially opened Saturday after a ship safely returned from Taiwan.The passenger ship, Coscostar, returned to the Damaiyu Port, Taizhou City of eastern Zhejiang Province Saturday, making it the second port on the mainland that has served the regular direct sea route with Taiwan, said He Jinliang, deputy head of the city's Taiwan affairs office.On June 26, the ship, carrying more than 500 passengers, traveled about 302 km to the Keelung Port of Taiwan, He said.With a tonnage of 26,800, the ship, owned by the China Ocean Shipping Companies Group, could carry about 600 passengers, 256 containers and 150 automobiles.The COSCO Star Passenger Ro-Ro Ship is berthed inside the Dabaiyu Port, prior to its maiden voyage to Keelung of Taiwan, at Taizhou City, east China's Zhejiang Province, June 26, 2010.The ship is scheduled to shuttle once a week. It will depart from Damaiyu in Yuhuan County on Saturday night and return the following Friday. The single trip would take eight to nine hours, traveling at various speed.Wang Yihao, deputy head of Yuhuan County, said the standard ticket costs 600 yuan (88.6 U.S.dollars) and the deluxe class ticket costs 1,000 yuan."The prices are nearly half that of airline tickets. BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) - Temperatures as high as 41 degrees Celsius continued to grill south China this week, but local Chinese are popping up with cool ways to cope with the heat.Every morning this summer, thousands of residents in the eastern Chinese city of Hanzhou rush to air-raid shelters, not to escape air attacks, but summer heat.In the capital of Zhejiang Province, many city dwellers have found their summer resorts in the city' s nine bomb shelters, which were dug beneath hummocks in the 1960s to defend against "American imperialist invaders" .In one shelter in southern Hanzhou, elders are watching swordsman TV opera or playing mahjong, while children play hide-and-seek in the labyrinth-like place.Temperatures inside the shelter were 22 degrees Celsius, compared to 38 degrees Celsius outdoors, according to a LED screen above one entrance."We old folks don' t like to be cooped up in air-conditioned rooms," said Ye Chulin, a local retiree. BEIJING, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Thursday urged members and officials of the Communist Party of China (CPC) to emulate the achievements of an official who died on duty after six years of dedicated work as a village Party secretary.Xi made the statement in Beijing while meeting with attendants to a ceremony to mark the release of a movie about the Party secretary's life in the village, and that of a book based on his diaries.The official, Shen Hao, had been a provincial government official in Anhui in central China, but was later assigned as a village Party secretary in 2004.Shen's devotion to his job brought about significant changes in the village and twice his term was extended at the request of the people in the village, though the work eventually cost him his life. He fell ill through constant overwork and died on November 6, 2009.Xi hailed Shen as a role model for CPC members and officials and urged them to maintain close ties with the people.
