MONTEREY, Calif. (KGTV) - A student was stabbed in the chest by another student Monday at North Monterey County Middle School, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department said.The attack happened in the quad of the Castroville school about 8:30 a.m., just before classes started, investigators said.The victim and the attacker are both 12 years old, said Deputy Joseph Banuelos. One of the boys stabbed the other with a six-inch kitchen knife, according to the deputy.A staff member approached the attacker and distracted him while another staff member came up behind the boy and tackled him.When deputies arrived, they arrested the attacker, who was sitting in the principal’s office.The school was locked down for an hour while a medical helicopter arrived to take the victim to a San Jose trauma center.The victim’s injuries are life threatening, Banuelos said.  880

NASA could make history on Tuesday as their spacecraft, OSIRIS-REx, will attempt to land on an ancient asteroid 200 million miles away from Earth.OSIRIS-REx launched in 2016. It arrived at the asteroid, named Bennu, in 2018 and it’s been mapping out the surface working to pick the best location to land ever since.The mission’s operations are headquartered at the University of Arizona.The mission will begin at 2:50 p.m. Arizona time on Tuesday. At 3:12 p.m., OSIRIS-REx will finally touch down on Bennu and collect a sample before heading back to Earth. Dr. Lori Glaze with NASA tells ABC15 the sample will allow researchers to study the ancient secrets of our solar system. She says Bennu also has a 1-in-2,700 chance of impacting Earth in about 150 years or so, so this mission can help researchers work to prevent that.“Helping us refine and reduce the uncertainties on Bennu’s orbit so we can better predict more precisely not only when it might intercept with Earth, but what the probability of that intersection is,” Dr. Glaze said. “So the mission's been critically important for refining Bennu’s orbit so we can help protect ourselves in the future.”Watch a live stream of the event in the player below. 1222

MURRIETA, Calif. (KGTV) -- One second she was getting the all-clear to go into the home, and the next the walls crumbled around her. A mother trapped inside when a Murrieta home when it exploded says there’s only one reason she made it out alive. "I just saw everything crashing down around me, and I thought I was dead, I thought that was it,” said Alexis Haaland, who was inside home when it blew up. Looking at the house Tuesday, Haaland says she’s still in shock she walked away from the explosion with only a few scratches. "I just stood still and I covered my head and I was screaming oh my god, just hoping nothing hit me."Haaland was having solar panels installed at the home she lived in with her family for about a month. She says the solar company told her they hit a gas line and that she should probably leave. She took her two kids and put them outside with her mother and little brother in their van. Haaland says a firefighter told her she could go back in and get her wallet and diaper bag. That’s when the home exploded. "I just knew I had to get out, and I ran to my mom and my kids and my mom just looked at me and was like how did you get out of there."Haaland says she got out through a window that was shattered in the blast. She says she was standing by a wall, the only one left standing after the home exploded. "I'm really shook up still, having a couple panic attacks and stuff, but I'm alive, and that's all that really matters."Haaland says she’s thankful that her kids were outside the home. She says the moments after the explosion were tough, adding that her thoughts are with the man killed in the explosion and those who were injured. "There wasn't much sleep last night. Pretty much any loud noise woke me up."The family says the community has stepped up and offered to help them after they lost everything in the blast. 1865

Most parents want to start saving for college while their child is young, but a new study by the Center for Michigan found that might be difficult.In Massachusetts, families with two children are paying, on average, more than ,000 for child care in a year. You can set aside up to ,000 tax-free pay for child care.  If your employer doesn't offer a flexible spending account, take advantage of the child care tax credit. NASA has tapped nine astronauts to become the first to launch to space from American soil since the Space Shuttle program was retired in 2011.The seven men and two women will also be the first astronauts to fly in capsules developed and built by the private sector as part of NASA's Commercial Crew Program.Since 2011, the United States has relied on Russia to ferry astronauts to the space station. SpaceX and Boeing were picked by NASA in 2014 to develop spacecrafts to return that capability to the United States, and both companies are slated to launch their first crewed missions in the next year.
