SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - 36,000 pounds of cocaine seized in the Eastern Pacific Ocean will be offloaded Tuesday from the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf onto San Diego’s B Street Pier.The contraband is from 17 busts on smuggling vessels off the coasts of Central and South America, officials said. Five Coast Guard cutters were involved in the seizures between early February and early March.Rear Adm. Todd Sokalzuk, the 11th Coast Guard District commander who oversees the law enforcement phase of counter-smuggling operations in the Eastern Pacific region, said the Coast Guard is seizing record amounts of cocaine for the third year in a row.“I’m proud of the hard work and dedication of my crew, as well as the crews of Coast Guard Cutters Bear, Diligence, Harriet Lane, Venturous and the joint and interagency personnel who work hand-in-hand to secure our nation,” said Capt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three Palomar College students will attend a national technology summit Wednesday to meet with students from around the country and share their work focusing on technological innovation.Quin Smith, a geologic information systems student, and drone technology students Isaac Hernandez and Diana Perez received scholarships from the National Science Foundation and the American Association of Community Colleges to attend the three-day Advanced Technology Education conference in Washington, D.C.Two students from Palomar College attended the conference last year as well as part of an NSF grant program, according to the college."It's really exciting to have our students share their work and their experience -- not only with other students from around the country, but also with the faculty and NSF program officers who will be at the conference," geography professor and drone technology program co-founder Wing Cheung said.The three students are expected to learn more about technology careers and development from industry professionals and some 850 student attendees.The ATE conference is in its 26th year, according to the AACC."This is going to help me learn how to break into the field and see what I want to do because we'll get to see all kinds of applications (for drone technology) we wouldn't have even thought about," Perez said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A classic Corvette nearly careened into a family's home Friday night, with a teenager behind the wheel. "Oh yea, we were just on the other side of the wall that she was just inches from hitting," said Tyler Churchill. El Cajon police say the 16-year-old driver was probably driving too fast down the hill."We have a lot of really nice cars that live up the street," Churchill said. "They come flying by all the time."She lost control, ending up with the car backward and on top of some cement blocks.Churchill and his family came running out when they heard the crash."We were all just hanging in the garage," he said. "I was changing a dirt bike tire, we heard a really long screech and a kind of gnarly crash, and we couldn't see anything because it was really dusty."Thankfully, the driver and everyone else made it out okay. "The first thing we did was run out and make sure she was ok," Churchill said. "I just can't believe she came down that driveway, missed cars by a few inches, missed my house by a few inches, I mean it was really just inches from everything, it was crazy." 1128

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Descanso woman whose power was cut during last week's Red Flag warning was surprised to receive a utility estimate showing an increase in power use.Cheryl Erpelding's power was taken away for parts of both Oct. 30 and Oct. 31, when SDG&E was trying to prevent a wildfire from igniting and spreading. Still, she got an estimate from SDG&E showing that she used the most power during the parts of those two days when the power was on. "If you're going to email me how much I'm using, why don't you email me a better guess," Erpelding said. RELATED: Homeowners with solar heated about SDG&E proposal to raise minimum billErpelding's weekly estimate showed she used 31 kilowatt hours on Oct. 31, and 26 kilowatt hours on Oct. 30. On other days of the week, her usage ranged from 16 to 24 kilowatt hours.SDG&E says the reason for this is Erpelding is a solar customer. The estimate she received reflects her net usage, which usually reflects credit for her putting power back into the grid. That reduces her net usage significantly. During the public safety power shutoffs, she did not put power back into the grid, but still used power during parts of the day it was on. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Cajon Valley School District worker crossed into oncoming traffic in his work truck Friday morning, striking a car with a mother and child inside, California Highway Patrol officers said. The crash happened about 10:30 a.m. on Avocado Blvd. north of Challenge Blvd. in the Rancho San Diego area, according to the CHP. Officers say the 55-year-old CVSD employee was driving a Ford pickup with a trailer and made an unsafe left turn movement into oncoming traffic. The truck came into the path of a Ford Fusion and the vehicles crashed head-on. The impact sent both vehicles into the front yard of a home. “Initial indications are that the child safety seat which contained the infant was not properly installed and was found by responding emergency personnel face down on the rear floorboard of the Ford Fusion,” CHP officers said. Both drivers had major injuries but are expected to survive. The infant’s injuries are unknown but did not to be serious, officers said. Drugs and alcohol are not factors in the crash. 1044
