Just three weeks before facing voters, Sen. Kamala Harris questioned Judge Amy Coney Barrett for 30 minutes during Barrett’s Supreme Court confirmation hearing on Tuesday.Harris, Joe Biden’s running mate and Democratic candidate for vice president, largely used her allotted time to point toward President Donald Trump’s campaign goal of eliminating the Affordable Care Act.Democrats, like Harris, have zeroed in on their belief that Barrett would vote to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, which was passed by a Democratic Congress and signed by President Barack Obama nearly a decade ago.Just one week after the election, the Supreme Court will hear another GOP-led challenge to the law. In 2012, the Affordable Care Act was “saved” in a 5-4 ruling by the Supreme Court as justices said that the law should stand as it levied a tax penalty for those without health care. In 2017, the individual mandate was struck down, meaning there is no longer a tax penalty component to Obamacare. Now the argument comes back to the Supreme Court, as Republicans claim the court's previous ruling is moot given there is no longer a tax penalty.Harris pointed to a previous op-ed pinned by Barrett when she was a law professor at Notre Dame to claim Barrett would rule against Obamacare. Barrett wrote that the Affordable Care Act should have been overturned in 2012."You've already opined the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act. And that position satisfied the president's promise to only nominate judges who would tear down the Affordable Care Act,” Harris said.Barrett fired back, and added that she has made no commitment to the Trump administration on overturning the act.“Question would be figuring out whether Congress, assuming that the mandate is unconstitutional now, whether that consistent with your intent,” Barrett said.Harris then pressed Barrett on her views on Roe vs. Wade. Barrett said multiple times throughout the hearing that she would not offer an opinion on the 1970s-era ruling that largely has kept abortion legal throughout the US.“I would suggest that we not pretend that we don't know how this nominee views a woman's right to choose,” Harris said.Harris was questioned by Mike Pence at last week’s vice presidential debate on whether her and Biden would be supportive of expanding the Supreme Court. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – When a Florida woman could no longer visit her husband with Alzheimer’s because of the state’s rules against visiting assisted living facilities, the couple was devastated.Like other facilities, Rosecastle at Deerwood in Jacksonville closed its doors to visitors on March 11 to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 to vulnerable patients.After the closure, Mary Daniel says she tried to communicate with her husband, Steve, in several different ways, like speaking over FaceTime, but none worked out.“My husband is not vocal. He talks a lot, but you can’t understand anything that he says, so the FaceTimes were extremely difficult. There is no exchange of conversation,” she said. “It was really a struggle to have any sort of connection with him.”Mary says they also tried to visit at Steve’s window on two different occasions, but her husband cried both times.“The last one was on Father’s Day,” she said. “I had to make the difficult decision not to do it anymore. I felt that it was really, really hard on him, that he almost did better without seeing me, so there wasn’t that realization that I wasn’t with him.”Although Mary says she understands that restrictions are in place to help protect patients from coronavirus, she’s very concerned about the impact of isolation, especially regarding those with memory issues.“Without that connection, their brains just wither away,” said Mary. “They need that stimulation of the brain to keep it alive. And that’s what’s happening in these memory care centers. We have separated them, because we want to save them, but this isolation is absolutely going to kill them.”Desperate for a solution, Mary asked her husband’s facility if there were any other ways she could visit in person and, three weeks ago, they ended up offering her a job as a part-time dishwasher. She jumped at the opportunity and began training.“OK then, a dishwasher it is. And I took the job.” she said.Mary says she’s not just there “for fluff.” She does the hard work of doing the dishes, mopping the floor, cleaning the grill and taking the garbage out. It’s all worth it though, because after 114 days, she reunited with her husband.“It’s 100% the real deal, but it’s so worth it,” she said. “Those two days, I’m able to go in and be with him. That’s the part that is so incredibly priceless.”Mary says she visits for a few hours, during which she and Steve fall back into their same routine of watching TV together before they get Steve ready for bed.Meanwhile, Mary has also started a Facebook group where she and others discuss what different states are doing to better care for people in assisted living facilities. It’s called Caregivers for Compromise.“I really wanted to put something together where everyone had a centralized place to go and then we can take it from there,” said Mary. “We’re investigating what’s going on in other states. We’re putting together position papers that we want to present to Gov. Ron DeSantis.”Their suggestions will include things like outdoor visits.“Many states are doing outdoor visits, where you have to maintain 6 feet social distancing, you have to wear a mask,” said Mary.The group is also advocating for “clean rooms,” areas where families meet one at a time and are disinfected after every visit.Click here to learn more about the group. 3339
LA JOLLA (CNS) - Two passengers riding in a speeding car died today when the vehicle hit a palm tree on Girard Avenue, police said.The crash happened at 3:16 a.m. when the driver of a Nissan Altima was speeding westbound on 1000 Torrey Pines Road, said Officer Dino Delimitros of the San Diego Police Department.The 26-year-old man driving the Altima made a left turn onto 7500 Girard Ave., lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a palm tree, the officer said.Two male passengers, ages 19 and 21, received major injuries and died at the scene, Delimitros said.The injured driver was taken to a hospital and will be held on suspicion of driving under the influence, the officer said. 696
KANSAS CITY, Kansas – The Kansas Attorney General’s Office Tuesday released indictments against three more officials and entities in connection to the Schlitterbahn Waterpark death in 2016. Jeffrey Wayne Henry, John Timothy Schooley, and Henry & Sons Construction Company, Inc. were indicted by a Wyandotte County Grand Jury.The trio faces reckless second-degree murder charges in addition to aggravated battery and aggravated child endangerment charges stemming from others who rode Verruckt at the company’s Kansas City, Kansas waterpark.Henry was taken into custody Monday by U.S. Marshals in Cameron County, Texas. A spokeswoman for the attorney general’s office said Schooley remains at large.Henry is co-owner of Schlitterbahn and is connected to Henry and Sons Construction Company.Schooley played a key role in the design of Verruckt.It was on Verruckt that then 10-year-old Caleb Schwab died in August 2016.Last week, the attorney general’s office charged the company and its park operations manager at the time of the incident, Tyler Miles, in connection to Schwab’s death.Miles pleaded not guilty in a court hearing in Wyandotte County on Friday. 1189

So make yourself more marketable by learning or developing a skill, or getting a certification (think mastering Excel or dipping a toe into project management). You can find courses for just about any topic on platforms like Coursera and Udemy.“Then, put that bullet point on your resume.
