SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local family is remembering their mother who died suddenly after suffering a brain aneurysm.Monica Pimentel, 43, collapsed at her home on May 17. She died the next day at the hospital with her family by her side. Monica was born and raised in San Diego. She graduated from Patrick Henry High School and was deeply involved in the San Carlos community. She was the mother of four children.This is the second time tragedy has struck the Pimentel family. In 2014, one of their daughters, Jewelean Pimentel, died from bacterial meningitis. Jewelean was a freshman at Patrick Henry and was also a cheerleader for the school. The family's father is devastated after suffering two heartbreaking losses. He is now taking care of the remaining three children. He and Monica had been married for 20 years. The Pimentel family released the following statement after Monica's death: 924

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A political kingmaker is using his fortune to shake up the San Diego race for District Attorney.The first television ads are hitting airwaves now, little more than a month before the election.The element of surprise surrounds the tone of an ad paid for by billionaire George Soros. He’s known for backing progressive candidates and shaking up elections, usually with controversial ads.The ad lays out Geneviéve Jones Wright’s qualifications to be San Diego County’s next District Attorney. It does not attack her opponent Summer Stephan, which is what most politicos expected.Jones Wright told 10News she had not seen the ad.Stephan’s campaign manager said he’s surprised the ad is more of an introduction than an attack. Jason Roe also said there is no doubt in his mind the gloves will come off, based on what he called Soros’ pattern of negative and dishonest ads.Jones Wright filed a complaint with the attorney general claiming Stephan was basically campaigning on the job and using photo ops with law enforcement in her campaign materials.Stephan’s campaign manager called it a distraction. 1128

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local family is desperately pleading to individual ICE officials to let them see their patriarch for the first time in 19 months. The Bakala family is seeking asylum after they say they barely escaped death in the Republic of Congo. Once they reached San Diego, the family of nine was separated.17-year-old Marie Louise Bakala should be focusing on college. But right now, that is on hold. "I am getting stronger, but it is not enough because I need my father back," Mari Louise said to the St. Luke's Episcopal Church congregation in North Park. The Bakala's left a comfortable life in the Republic of Congo. Father Constantin was a computer engineer for the Ministry of Health. His wife Annie Kapongo was a shop owner and mother of seven. The Bakalas say it all changed when the new government stepped in. Kapongo says because of Constantin's occupation, the family was targeted, brutalized, and even sexually abused by Congolese authorities. Fearing for their lives, they came to San Diego in 2017 to seek political asylum."This family came across a world come to a country that will protect them, but instead, it has only been a continuing nightmare," Pastor Colin Mathewson said. Annie Kapongo was released with an ankle monitor with the seven kids in San Diego. Immigration and Customs Enforcement [ICE] authorities detained Constantin in the East Coast alone. In February, a judge rejected Constantin's asylum case and appeal. But in March, he as given an emergency stay. Just last week, he earned the right to appear in front of a judge again, this time with a lawyer. Friends and staff of St. Luke's are now pleading with ICE to grant Constantin parole, to be with his family. They say it would be a show of good faith, just as the Good Samaritan did in the Bible."There is an assistant field director, and there is a deportation officer out there in Atlanta," Pastor Mathewson said. "We are asking Christine and Michael today to help somebody that needs so much help. After 19 months of detention, to bring him back home with his family as he awaits his next court date.""I hope that he will be here with us and we will be a family again," Marie Louise said."Please, please help me," Kapongo said through a French translator. "Send me back my husband."Last year, the couple missed their 20th wedding anniversary because Constantin was detained. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A mother and son who died in a shooting at a Linda Vista home earlier this week were identified by San Diego police.On Dec. 7, at around 3:15 a.m., officers were called to a home in the 2200 block of Crandall Drive in response to a shooting.Responding officers found a man and a woman inside the home with gunshot wounds to their upper bodies, according to police.The woman, identified as 46-year-old Hue Le, died from her injuries at the hospital.RELATED: Mother dead, son gravely injured in Linda Vista shootingThe injured man, identified as the deceased woman’s 28-year-old son Justin Le, was placed on life support but police said he passed away on Tuesday evening.According to police, Justin Le’s injuries appeared to be self-inflicted.The case is being investigated as an apparent murder-suicide, San Diego police said.No other details on the case were released. 895

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man accused of sexually assaulting women at knife-point across San Diego will face trial.On Tuesday, Judge Maureen F. Hallahan bound over eight felony counts against 19-year-old Seth Roberts.Three of his alleged victims gave testimony on Tuesday, describing their encounters with him.The first was an 18-year-old woman who said she had dated Roberts for about two months last year. They had been living in Oklahoma but both decided to hitchhike to California in October. RELATED: Former pro skateboarder convicted of rape and murder granted paroleThe woman, whose name was not released, said they stayed in Los Angeles for a week before coming down to San Diego where they were staying in a tent at a campground.She told the judge Roberts forcibly raped her one morning, holding her hands above her head.“I was telling him it was wrong, saying it was rape,” she said.After, she said Roberts left to go to work and she called a Lyft car which drove her all the way to Arizona where she called police and reported the alleged rape.The second victim said she met Roberts while walking near the beach in Pacific Beach in November of 2018.“He seemed like a very nice person,” she said through an interpreter.RELATED: Police searching for additional victims in sex assault caseThe woman said she is from Brazil but had been living in Washington, DC working as an au pair for a family.She traveled with them to San Diego for vacation and bumped into Roberts on her day off.She said he began making small talk and told her his roommate had a Brazilian girlfriend. He convinced her to walk with him towards his apartment to meet her.But she said before they made it there, he directed her to an area on the side of a home and pulled out a knife.She told the court that Roberts put his hand down her pants and inserted his finger into her anus while holding a knife to her throat.“I thought of my family. I thought of my dreams, how much I wanted to come here,” she said. “I could have never imagined this would happen to me.”A third woman also testified, saying Roberts raped her in her home at knife-point after she refused his advances.Roberts is being held on ,000,000 bail.
