The co-founder of the Salt Life apparel brand is in a Florida jail following his arrest in connection with the death of an 18-year-old woman at a Singer Island hotel.Michael Hutto, 54, was booked into the main Palm Beach County jail Sunday. Hutto was arrested Oct. 30 on a manslaughter charge in Jacksonville.Hutto is accused of shooting Lora Grace Duncan at the Hilton Singer Island oceanfront resort. Police said the 18-year-old Lake City woman was found dead of a single gunshot wound inside a room at the hotel.According to a probable cause affidavit, Duncan's father had requested a welfare check on his daughter on Oct. 29 after he hadn't heard from her in several days. Using her cellphone's location, her father was able to track her down at the Hilton, where police found her lying dead on the floor with a gunshot wound to the stomach.The room had been rented in Hutto's name, and his wallet and identification card were inside the room, police said.An investigation revealed that one day earlier, Hutto had been taken to a Jacksonville hospital after deputies in St. Johns County found his car illegally parked in a St. Augustine gas station parking lot. Hutto was reported to have been "twitching, making delusional comments and crying while his eyes were rolling into the back of his head."When detectives questioned Hutto at the hospital, he told them, "Oh my God, I think I hurt my Gracie" and then began to cry, the affidavit said.Later, Hutto told detectives he and Duncan were headed to the Florida Keys to visit some of his friends when they stopped at the Hilton. After spending time together on the beach, Hutto said, they were "playing inside of the hotel room as if they were shooting with their finger and a gun."Hutto told detectives that Duncan was sitting on the counter in the bathroom when he pointed the gun at her and it fired, shooting her. Hutto said he then put the gun in his backpack and left her in the room, driving until he ran out of gas.Duncan's father told police that Hutto, who was her boyfriend, had been giving her drugs to keep her sedated.The co-founder of the popular Salt Life apparel brand appeared before a Palm Beach County judge Monday morning. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday that it’s investigating salmonella cases linked to pet bearded dragons and hedgehogs.The CDC said that 13 salmonella infections in eight states have been potentially tied to handling the pets. The CDC confirmed that seven of the infections resulted in hospitalizations. Ten of the 13 ill people reported contact with a bearded dragon.Those who reported illnesses said they purchased bearded dragons from pet stores, but a common supplier has not been identified.The CDC said that two similar outbreaks were tied to hedgehogs in the last decade.The CDC offers owners of pet bearded dragons and hedgehogs the following tips:Always wash hands thoroughly with soap and water right after touching your pet or anything in its environment.Don’t kiss or snuggle your pet because this can spread Salmonella germs to your face and mouth and make youKeep your pet out of your kitchen and other areas where you eat, store, or prepare food.Clean items you use to care for your pet outside the house, if possible. If you clean the items indoors, clean them in a laundry sink or bathtub. Make sure to thoroughly disinfect the area right after.Don’t let children younger than 5 touch the bearded dragon or hedgehog because young children are more likely to have severe Salmonella illness.Before bringing home a new pet, research the pet’s needs and see if it’s a good fit for your family. 1444

The city attorney is cracking down on independent living facilities that are posing a danger to their residents - and potentially neighbors.City Attorney Mara Elliott's office is investigating about two-dozen of these facilities and prosecuting the operators of six, the office announced Wednesday. The facilities, often inside single-family homes, are unregulated and unlicensed. They provide physically and mentally disabled persons a last chance to avoid homelessness. But Elliott said the operators often take advantage of residents. She said this came onto her radar after investigating a home last year. "It was a horrible situation where 11 individuals were essentially being held captive in this home and didn't have sanitary facilities," she said. "The shower facilities were covered in feces, they didn't have food they didn't have ventilation, they didn't have access to telephones."On Wednesday, Elliott's office announced charges against two more facilities, one on Parkbrook Lane in Skyline and another on Brandywood Street in North Bay Terraces. Operators and owners are charged with violations including vermin infestations, blocked exists, improper plumbing, and fire hazards. People who live near the Parkbrook Lane home described shouting in the middle of the night, verbal harassment, physical fighting and graffiti. "We moved because of it," said one neighbor, whose first name was Tammy. The home had trash and old mattresses on the property. The owner, Evelyn Louise Peters, said the issues identified were only one-time instances and the trash accumulated after the home was vacated. Sherry Lynn Bennett, who manages the home in North Bay Terraces, said the issues are being dealt with."The owners have been doing all the repairs, everything is done, everything's back to normal, we've done everything the city's said," Bennett said. Bennett and Peters are charged with 22 misdemeanor violations of the health, safety and municipal codes.There is no telling how many of these facilities exist in the county. In December, a man living in an El Cajon independent living home was beaten to death with a frying pan. El Cajon police had responded to calls at the home 78 times in the year leading up to the event. 2241
