SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego-based telemarketer was fined nearly million by the Federal Communications Commission Wednesday for making more than 47,000 robocalls over a two-day period leveling false accusations against a local state Assembly candidate and manipulating caller ID information to appear as though a competitor was making the calls.Kenneth Moser and his company, Marketing Support Systems, were fined ,997,750 for making the calls on May 30 and May 31, 2018, about one week prior to the primary election, in which Philip Graham unsuccessfully sought to represent the 76th Assembly District.Shortly before the primary, a woman accused Graham of kissing her against her will in an Encinitas bar, triggering a sheriff's department investigation that concluded the claim was unfounded. Nichole Burgan, the woman at the heart of the allegation, later pleaded guilty to filing a false report.According to the FCC, the robocall messages repeated Burgan's claim and caller ID information was manipulated to make the calls appear as though they originated from another telemarketing company, HomeyTel, described as a competitor to Moser's company. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Tijuana man and his three adult children were indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly smuggling hundreds of illegal immigrants across the border for profit, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Friday.Luis Antonio Mendez-Brahan, 55, remains at large, but his children, Christopher Mendez, 28, and Wendy Monserrath Mendez, 24, both of Wasco in Kern County; and Nancy Jacqueline Suarez, 31, of Madera, were arrested at their homes on Thursday, prosecutors said.Mendez-Brahan is accused of leading the smuggling scheme for nearly a decade, which allegedly operated near the Tecate Port of Entry and "used an ever-changing cadre of spotters, guides and drivers" to move "hundreds of illegal aliens into the United States."Mendez-Brahan is accused of charging between ,000 and ,500 for each person smuggled into the U.S., while his children allegedly used family members in both countries to move the money. Border Patrol investigators tracked financial transactions between Mendez-Brahan's children in the U.S. to money service businesses in Tijuana, according to prosecutors.The four family members are each charged with conspiracy to bring in illegal aliens for financial gain, to transport illegal aliens and to conduct financial transactions with proceeds of specified unlawful activity. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was hospitalized in San Diego Saturday morning after being seriously injured when he laid down in front of his friend's car during an argument and was run over, authorities said Saturday.The incident occurred at 11:15 p.m. Friday in the 5800 block of Market Street in the Emerald Hills neighborhood, according to Officer John Buttle with the San Diego Police Department.The victim argued with his friend and in an attempt to get his friend's attention, he laid down in the street in front of a car the suspect was driving and was run over, Buttle said.A friend of the victim called 911 to report the incident and the suspect got out of the car and took the friend's cell phone and told the 911 operator the victim had laid down intentionally in front of his car, then the suspect drove away from the scene, said Buttle.The victim was transported to a hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries, he said.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodThe suspect's vehicle is a 2001 burgundy Mazda 4-door with California license plate number 7XNW211. 1095

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Federal officials in San Diego Wednesday announced the arrests of hundreds of suspects and the seizure of more than a ton and a half of narcotics as part of a crackdown on a Mexican criminal gang considered responsible for much of the flow of illicit drugs into the United States.During a late-morning briefing at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's Kearny Mesa offices, DEA and Justice Department officials detailed the results of the multi-agency operation targeting the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion."Project Python is the single-largest strike by U.S. authorities against CJNG, and this is just the beginning," DEA Acting Administrator Uttam Dhillon said.The six-month enforcement campaign has resulted in the capture of more than 600 gang associates and 350 indictments, including one against the alleged head of the criminal organization, fugitive Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, also known as "El Mencho."The Department of State has issued one of the largest narcotics crimes- related rewards ever -- million -- for information leading to the arrest of Cervantes.In San Diego and Imperial counties, the operation has led to the arrests of about 130 CJNG associates and seizure of 3,282 pounds of methamphetamine, 198 kilograms of cocaine, 59 kilograms of heroin, 44 kilograms of fentanyl, two kilograms of opium, in excess of 27,000 fentanyl pills and 18 guns, according to the DEA.The Jalisco-based cartel is one of the fastest-growing transnational criminal organizations in Mexico and among the most prolific methamphetamine producers in the world, and is the source of a large amount of drugs entering the United States and elevated levels of violence in Mexico, according to federal officials.Last month, Cervantes' son and second-in-command, Ruben Oseguera "Menchito" Gonzalez, was extradited from Mexico to the United States on drug- trafficking charges.
