It’s a change Melaine Grein could feel in her joints even before the snow began to fall.“I can feel it in my ankle and I know the weather is going to change before it even does just because it hurts. It’s really stiff,” Grein said.Grein hurt her ankle a couple of years ago and says she’s been able to feel temperature changes in it ever since.“It’s just affected by the weather, cold, rain, everything,” she said. “I’ve told my friend before that I think it’s going to rain and then it did.”Grein isn’t the only one who says she can feel the weather change. Many people with arthritis pain say they can feel it in their joints or bones.At Englewood Primary Care in the Swedish Medical Center, Dr. Scott Joy says it isn’t an urban myth when people say they can feel the weather change.“Big changes in temperature can change blood flow through the body,” Joy said. “Any time we get a large weather system moving through the area it changes the pressure, and people who have chronic joint pain will often notice more joint pain.”A big temperature change can affect three groups of people in particular: those with heart disease, asthma or arthritis. The weather can pose serious health risks for all three groups, which is why Joy says it’s important to be prepared.For people with heart disease, it’s important to have all of your medications on hand and to take them as prescribed. Joy says it’s also a good idea to have some nitroglycerin on hand.If people experience pain in their chest or shortness of breath with the weather change, it’s important to seek medical help.“These are things that can actually lead to death and serious morbidity and mortality. It can lead to unnecessary ER visits, it can lead to long hospital stays, it can even lead to stays in the intensive care unit if you have a severe event,” Joy said.For people with asthma, along with having their chronic inhaler on hand, it’s important to keep a rescue inhaler nearby since the weather change can trigger some inflammation in the upper airways.For those with chronic joint pain, it’s important to have an anti-inflammatory on hand in case the temperature change causes pain.For everyone else, it’s important to bundle up and protect your skin.“You are at real risk for skin damage and dry skin and frostbite,” Joy said.As always, Joy says it’s also a good idea to stay hydrated as well and don’t overexert yourself.This story was originally published by 2433

at a Colorado nursing home, but the facility is defending its reputation.Miaya Ramirez only worked for University Heights Rehab & Care a few months but what she saw will stay with her much longer. “Patients being neglected, not getting showers, not getting fed properly, being left in their room, unsanitary conditions, being left in soiled briefs,” Ramirez explained to KMGH. The week after she started working, Ramirez says the Director of Nursing asked her to lie on a state report about being understaffed. “We had holes in the staffing book and the DON (Director of Nursing) asked me to fill in people's names in the staffing book and I told her I didn’t feel comfortable doing that,” she said. Ramirez says she was suspended and ultimately fired for trying to care for patients not being helped by nursing staff. She says the doctor of one patient even called police about the neglect. “When the doctor pulled the bandages off she couldn't believe what she saw; she said the wounds were worse,” Ramirez said. “She asked if the dressings were being changed when they were supposed to, if the resident was getting up out of bed when she was supposed to and I told her 'no,'” Ramirez said. Ultimately, Ramirez was fired for putting a clean bandage on that patient. She shared recordings of her termination. University Heights said she was operating out of the scope of care. “What they told me was I should have left the dirty bandage on her backside,” Ramirez said. With the talk of a possible COVID-19 vaccine on the way, some wonder if people who’ve recovered from COVID-19 should still get the vaccine.Months after his COVID-19 diagnosis, Robert Marrero’s road to recovery isn’t over. WFTS shared his story when he was released from the hospital in May.“Much better in the sense where I don’t have to struggle talking, but I’m still having difficulty with the brain fog. I’m still having problems with my walking, and the pain from my waist down to my toes,” said Marrero. “It’s very, very slow progress. It’s almost, I guess, [been] nine months already.”USF Health professor Dr. Marissa Levine explained that if you’ve already had COVID-19, the general recommendation they expect will be that you should get a COVID-19 vaccine when it’s approved and available.“Remember that what we’re looking at is an experimental authorization, that there’s a lot more to learn about this vaccine, so we don’t really know a lot about immunity yet, even for people who’ve had COVID, how long does that immunity last, let alone the immunity from the vaccine,” said Dr. Levine.Levine points to precedent, reminding people that vaccines are recommended for those who’ve had certain diseases before, like shingles. While it's believed to be rare, Levine says there is a potential risk of COVID-19 reinfection.“We know that you have immunity for some period of time,” said Levine. “It could be months, it could be longer, and like many other diseases, immunity duration really varies a lot by individuals.”Earlier this week, a CDC advisory committee voted to recommend both health care workers and long-term care facility residents be the first to get a COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available. Levine says it’s important to keep an eye out for official recommendations for COVID-19 survivors, too.For long-haulers, the people who have lingering COVID-19 symptoms, Dr. Levine suggests people check in with their doctor first. But Marrero says if his doctor gives him the green light, he’ll sign right up.“Just try to be safe.
