General Motors recently announced that it would be shutting down five car factories in the United States and Canada and cutting 14,000 jobs. GM said at the time that factory workers would be offered jobs at other facilities where production is being increased and on Friday it offered an update on how things are going.Of the jobs GM plans to cut, 2,800 are hourly employees in the United States. These are generally assembly line workers who punch in and out for work each day as opposed to employees who are paid a salary. The automaker announced Friday that 1,100 of those hourly workers have volunteered to transfer to jobs at other factories, such as GM's Flint, Michigan, truck plant where heavy duty pickups are built and the Toledo transmission plant in Toledo, Ohio. Another 1,200 workers in that group are eligible for retirement, the company said. The US plants GM is shutting down are in Michigan, Ohio, and Maryland. These plants mostly made sedans, which have fallen out of favor as customers have shifted toward crossover SUVs and trucks.GM also said last month that Canadian workers would be offered jobs at other plants in that country. In total, the company announced it would cut 6,000 hourly and 8,000 salaried positions. In October, the company offered voluntary buyouts to 18,000 workers.GM CEO Mary Barra has said she wants to save money and reposition the company for future investments in autonomous driving technology and electric cars. She wants to do this now, she has said, rather than waiting and cutting jobs during an economic crisis."Today, we have a plan for the majority of employees currently working at our impacted plants in Maryland, Michigan, Ohio and Oshawa, Canada that includes job opportunities at other GM facilities," Barra tweeted Friday. "We're committed to doing the right thing, for the future of GM and our people." 1901

GENEVA (AP) — The European Union’s Earth observation program says the ozone hole over Antarctica has swelled to its largest size and deepest level in years.Experts at the Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service say a strong, stable and cold polar vortex has driven the expansion, and have called for greater international efforts to ensure countries abide by an international accord to phase out use of ozone-depleting chemicals.Vincent-Henri Peuch, who heads the service, said in a statement that the ozone hole was “definitely” among the largest in the last 15 years.“With the sunlight returning to the South Pole in the last weeks, we saw continued ozone depletion over the area,” Peuch said. “After the unusually small and short-lived ozone hole in 2019, which was driven by special meteorological conditions, we are registering a rather large one again this year, which confirms that we need to continue enforcing the Montreal Protocol banning emissions of ozone depleting chemicals.”Since the ban on halocarbons, officials say the ozone layer has slowly been recovering and data shows a trend in decreasing area of the ozone hole.Ozone depletion over the Antarctic continent was first noticed in 1985. 1217

HAMILTON, Ohio — A man pocketed a puppy Saturday while perusing an Ohio pet store, packing the struggling little animal into the single oversized pocket of his hoodie and using his hands to keep it inside as he left.Propitiously for the pilfered pet and Preferred Puppies, the place from which it was plundered, he did so in full view of a security camera. Two days after the proprietor posted the recording to YouTube, the puppy’s new parent -- apparently unaware it had been stolen -- contacted the store and returned it. According to Preferred Puppies, it seems healthy but will need a checkup before it can go back on display. In the meantime, the puppy thief will face a problem he probably should have predicted: The police. "We filed a report with the police and provided video footage from several different cameras," the business wrote on Youtube. "So, they’ll catch him." 908

HINTON, W.V. – Wild and wonderful, the natural beauty of West Virginia can’t be questioned. But the people who live there have seen better days. Sean Phelps sees it all the time.“Bunch of friends from high school that are in prison for drugs, or they (overdosed) from drugs or committed suicide because of drugs. It’s a lot worse here than people think,” said Phelps who lives in the state. The opioid crisis has hit West Virginia as hard as any other state in the country. Combine that with nearly 80,000 coal jobs lost since 1990 and things have been a little bleak.“I had some friends in the coal mines. When the coal mines shut down, they’re not as well off now, that is for sure. Bunch of them are struggling really bad,” he said. But things are buzzing at Appalachian Beekeeping Collective.“Bee keeping integrates everything in our environment and it’s such a heart and mind thing. Like I was saying earlier, people are rooting for honeybees. They’re worried about honeybees and we want to give them tools to really help them in a concrete way,” said Kevin Johnson with the collective. The group is cracking open honeycomb and harvesting sweet, sticky, honey.“It’s a sticky job,” said Robbie Gardisky, who works at the collective harvesting honey.Phelps used to be an EMT and janitor. Gardisky was doing landscaping. Michael Beckner worked in IT.“Not a lot of people that work a job say they love their job. Everybody that works here, loves their job,” said Phelps. They’re all on a second career of sorts. The goal of the collective is to create economic opportunities for rural families in the state. They teach people the skills and give them the materials to keep their own bees.“Our work, even though it’s focused on bees, it’s about working with people,” said Johnson.Johnson is one of the people who mentors prospective beekeepers. Passing on his knowledge is one of his favorite parts of his job.“We have a 12-year-old who is the youngest apprentice beekeeper in West Virginia. We also have an 83-year-old beekeeper. We’ve got people who live on large cattle farms, people who live on small lots in hollers. And all of those are great places for bees,” he said. The collective has taught and distributed bee boxes to hundreds of West Virginians. They also harvest the sweet nectar for their participants and pay them for it.It’s really all in an effort to help rebuild some of the people in this state the world seems to have forgotten and connect them with the amazing natural resources this state has to offer.“I think the people of West Virginia are perhaps its most underappreciated resource, but its most valuable,” said Johnson. 2650

Hillary Clinton says she's "convinced" there was collusion between Russia and members of Donald Trump's team during the 2016 campaign, according to a Monday night interview with USA Today. When asked if she believes that there was collusion by Trump associates with Russians during the campaign, Clinton said: "I'm convinced of it.""I happen to believe in the rule of law and believe in evidence, so I'm not going to go off and make all kinds of outrageous claims," the former Democratic presidential hopeful said. "But if you look at what we've learned since (the election), it's pretty troubling."Ahead of the release of her new memoir, "What Happened," Clinton has been discussing her experiences from the campaign trail and the time following her loss to Trump. 772
