SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Lemon Grove man who aimed a laser pointer at a San Diego police helicopter during a police protest this summer is facing a maximum possible sentence of five years in prison following his conviction by a federal jury, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Thursday.Rudy Alvarez, 25, was found guilty by a jury in San Diego federal court late Wednesday for shining a laser at the SDPD chopper around 8:30 p.m. June 4 in the area of 500 University Ave.The U.S. Attorney's Office said Alvarez shined the laser at the chopper multiple times over the course of an hour as he marched with protesters through downtown San Diego.The count of aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft carries a maximum possible sentence of five years in prison and a 0,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 22.U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer called the result "a very important verdict" and said "This kind of crime could have a disastrous impact if a pilot's sight is compromised. We support the Constitutional rights of free speech and assembly, but the rule of law must be respected. It's there for a reason -- to protect the public and law enforcement from danger."Earlier this year, the U.S. Attorney's Office also charged San Diego resident Stephen Glenn McLeod with the same count for allegedly directing a laser at a San Diego Police Department chopper multiple times during a protest on Aug. 28. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Multiple local and nonprofit organizations around San Diego County will host Christmas meals Tuesday for underserved and low-income residents.Salvation Army San Diego will host its 35th annual Christmas meal, beginning at 11 a.m. at Golden Hall at 202 C St. The organization expects hundreds of volunteers to assist with the event. Volunteers will escort attendees to their seats and serve them a traditional holiday meal.Serving Seniors will also host its annual Christmas meal for low- income and homeless San Diego County seniors, many of whom would otherwise spend the holiday alone. About 350 seniors will enjoy a meal of Cornish hen with Mornay sauce, cornbread dressing, whipped potatoes, green peas and carrot cake, according to the organization. The meal begins at 11 a.m. at 1525 Fourth Ave.Rev. Shane Harris, former president of the National Action Network, will host his second annual community Christmas breakfast at the National Black Contractors Association. Attendees will receive a free hot breakfast, free clothes and children will receive free gifts.The event begins at 7 a.m. at 6125 Imperial Ave. According to Harris, the breakfast is open to the public, but foster families, low-income residents, homeless residents and military veterans are all encouraged to attend. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Federal officials in San Diego Wednesday announced the arrests of hundreds of suspects and the seizure of more than a ton and a half of narcotics as part of a crackdown on a Mexican criminal gang considered responsible for much of the flow of illicit drugs into the United States.During a late-morning briefing at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's Kearny Mesa offices, DEA and Justice Department officials detailed the results of the multi-agency operation targeting the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion."Project Python is the single-largest strike by U.S. authorities against CJNG, and this is just the beginning," DEA Acting Administrator Uttam Dhillon said.The six-month enforcement campaign has resulted in the capture of more than 600 gang associates and 350 indictments, including one against the alleged head of the criminal organization, fugitive Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, also known as "El Mencho."The Department of State has issued one of the largest narcotics crimes- related rewards ever -- million -- for information leading to the arrest of Cervantes.In San Diego and Imperial counties, the operation has led to the arrests of about 130 CJNG associates and seizure of 3,282 pounds of methamphetamine, 198 kilograms of cocaine, 59 kilograms of heroin, 44 kilograms of fentanyl, two kilograms of opium, in excess of 27,000 fentanyl pills and 18 guns, according to the DEA.The Jalisco-based cartel is one of the fastest-growing transnational criminal organizations in Mexico and among the most prolific methamphetamine producers in the world, and is the source of a large amount of drugs entering the United States and elevated levels of violence in Mexico, according to federal officials.Last month, Cervantes' son and second-in-command, Ruben Oseguera "Menchito" Gonzalez, was extradited from Mexico to the United States on drug- trafficking charges. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who jumped onstage during a Taylor Swift concert at Petco Park in 2015 and was tackled by members of her security team -- seriously injuring one of them -- is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday for allegedly beating a man to death in the Midway District earlier this month. Christian Ewing, 29, was arrested last Friday for a parole violation and was re-arrested Monday on suspicion of murder in the death of 57-year-old Gregory Freeman. Freeman was found Dec. 5 in the 3900 block of Rosecrans Street near the Interstate 5 overpass, police said. Freeman, who had trauma to his upper body, was taken to a hospital but died four days later. One witness told police that Freeman was on the ground when a man began to hit him with some sort of object. The attacker then fled, said San Diego police Lt. Anthony Dupree. More than three years ago, Ewing sneaked into Swift's concert and jumped onstage while she was performing. He was tackled by security guards, one of whom suffered a broken rib. Ewing pleaded guilty to assault and was sentenced to probation and given credit for three years in custody. 1130

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities warned the public Friday to beware of crooks who have telephoned Poway-area residents in recent weeks and tried to swindle them out of money by falsely claiming that the victims were in arrears due to outstanding arrest warrants or other obligations to local government coffers."These scammers and impersonators sometimes provide the victims with genuine Sheriff's Department phone numbers, and in the past they have actually used the names of real department employees," sheriff's Lt. Christopher Collier said. "They may sometimes even want to arrange a meeting in the parking lot of a government building or station in an effort to appear legitimate."No employees of the regional law enforcement agency -- or of any other county body -- contact members of the public by telephone to discuss such matters, Collier noted."Nor would any employees ever try to arrange a meeting to allow (a) payment to be made," the lieutenant said. "If you receive a call from a person or persons claiming to be a Sheriff's Department employee, and that person is trying to solicit a payment of some sort, please hang up the phone immediately."Victims of such illicit solicitations are also advised to report the offenses to the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov, or to local law enforcement if the contact results in an actual loss of money or personal information. 1392
