SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The three-day winter meeting of the National Council of Legislators from Gaming States will bring nearly four dozen legislators from 20 states to San Diego Friday to discuss the state of the gaming industry and its economic impacts. The three-day meeting at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina is open to the public, and will be attended by state legislators, gaming operators, suppliers, sports executives, attorneys, analysts, regulators and other public officials with stakes in legalized gambling. The winter meeting will include legislative-chaired sessions on tribal and commercial casinos, responsible gaming, and more; master classes on sports betting and tribal-state compacting, and a tour of the Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula.RELATED: Sports betting becomes legal in several states ahead of football season``The participation and attendance of legislators from across the country underscores the importance of the NCLGS semiannual meetings as the only gaming conferences where the legislative decision-makers learn from industry leaders and from each other," said NCLGS President William P. Coley, an Ohio state senator. 1162

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two San Diego City Council members called Wednesday on California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and District Attorney Summer Stephan to investigate San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott's possible role in an alleged child sexual abuse cover-up at the San Diego Junior Theatre.Council members Scott Sherman and Vivian Moreno sent a jointly written letter to Becerra and Stephan imploring them to investigate allegations made by attorney Matt Valenti that Elliott improperly shared information on the case with then-Junior Theatre Board member Gil Cabrera, who Valenti claims tried to silence the case's whistleblowers."We are writing to respectfully request your respective offices' review and consideration for appropriate action, as the authority to investigate these complaints falls under the jurisdiction of your departments," their letter states. "We believe a timely resolution to the matter is in the best interest of all parties."RELATED: San Diego Junior Theatre teacher convicted of sex with underage studentHilary Nemchik, spokeswoman for the city attorney's office, suggested Valenti's allegations against Elliott are a political attack intended to benefit his lawyer, Cory Briggs, who filed paperwork last month signaling his intent to run against her for city attorney."Mr. Valenti has repackaged allegations he sent to the City Council, the District Attorney and the Attorney General more than two years ago," Nemchik said in an emailed statement. "If any law enforcement agency thinks further review of the Junior Theatre is warranted, we support that decision."In 2017, shortly before former Junior Theatre teacher Eric von Metzke pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, Valenti sent an email summary to Elliott, Becerra and Stephan outlining his claims that Cabrera tampered with the investigation into sexual abuse allegations at the theater.Elliott, Valenti alleges, sent that email to Cabrera, disclosing sensitive information in the process. Elliott has maintained that Valenti made no effort to keep the email summary private or confidential by publishing it online. 2136

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Security is tight at San Diego's mosques following an arson attack at a mosque in Escondido early Sunday morning. Someone set fire to the Islamic Center of Escondido on West Sixth Avenue around 3 a.m, but a handful of worshippers was inside, and the group put out the fire before it caused any significant damage. When police arrived, they found a message in graffiti referencing the recent shootings at mosques in New Zealand. Monday afternoon, two San Diego Police Department patrol cars sat in the parking lot of the Islamic Center of San Diego. Directors say worshipers are nervous. "They accept the faith of what happened, others are very, you know, worried as well. It's a mixed mood," said Khelil Ouznali, vice chair of the board of directors. The center already has surveillance cameras all over the property and guards on duty, but now the directors are considering hiring armed guards. "We are looking into improving security, you know, we are looking into different options based on the feedback from our community," said Ouznali. On the campus of San Diego State University Monday, dozens of students rallied against hate. They marched through the student union chanting, "No hate at state, Muslims are here to stay, no hate at state, Muslims are here to stay!" Faduma Mohamed is a member of the Muslim Student Association. "It just goes to show there's a lot of hate against us, but although some people can attempt to destroy Muslims, Islam itself the religion, cannot be destroyed," said Mohamed. The group posted pictures of the lives lost in the shooting rampages at the mosques in New Zealand and the attack at a Jewish Synagogue in Pittsburgh. "It doesn't matter what race, religion or color you are, every human life matters and we share a common denominator of a soul and spirit and that they should take part in respecting these people whose lives were lost," said Mohamed. 1926
