SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Back to school looked different for everyone according to Misty Jones, who helped run Career Online High School, a free program put on by the San Diego Public Library."It's geared towards people who have disengaged from the educational system for some type of reason and did not graduate."The program allowed them to finish where they left off through online courses."They get their high school diploma and career certificate by the end of it," Jones described. The program was around for 5 years and had gained popularity in the Spring."People are at home and they have more time. It's difficult to go to school and try to work at the same time," Jones said. They typically saw 50 students a year but since March the number doubled."I know a lot of people are out of of jobs and they're thinking of their future, 'what can I do to ensure success moving forward'."Genevieve Redondo is a mother of two and dropped out of high school her senior year. "I have ADHD and dyslexia. Being in school was difficult because of the attention, I couldn't focus all that well," Redondo described. She received her diploma through COHS then went on to nursing school and eventually got her master's degree."The opportunity they gave me to graduate, ever since then everything has change, my entire life has changed and it's been incredible."Jones said the average age was 28 to 35, but that was just the average."We have people in their 60's that are going back and getting their high school diploma and that shows its never too late to get your education."They even held graduation ceremonies like any other high school did."I cry at every graduation," said Jones. "It's really fulfilling to help people be their best self and help them achieve goals they never thought they'd achieve." 1798

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Anti-tax advocates rallied Wednesday against an array of bond measures across San Diego County say they will add more than billion in debt to San Diego taxpayers if they all pass. "We have to say no to the big bond bailout of 2018," said anti-tax advocate Carl DeMaio, flanked by a dozen supporters, and Tony Krvaric, chairman of the Republican Party in San Diego County. While calling for an across the board rejection of all bond measures on the ballot, the speakers focused most of their ire on Measure Y-Y, the .5 billion measure for the San Diego Unified School District.RELATED: What you need to know about voting this November"These bonds are used to cover up financial mismanagement in local government. They are big ol' bailout," said DeMaio. "They're running up the credit card." Tax reform advocates say Y-Y is the third in a series for San Diego Unified that began in 2008. And that the promises of the previous measures were broken.  "You should ask the people who wrote measure Y-Y why they didn't get the projects they put on the list in 2008 and 2012 done," DeMaio said.10News met with San Diego Unified spokesman Andrew Sharp at Grant K-12 in Mission Hills. RELATED: Enthusiasm bump not reflected in early California voting"You can see a state of the art classroom building," Sharp said as he pointed at a new looking structure on the campus. "That was a result of the generous support of taxpayers and proposition S and Z."Grant says the bond measures in 2008 and 2012 were always the first two steps in a three-part improvement of San Diego schools. "In 2008 we developed a district-wide plan; what it would cost to bring all of our schools into working order. And this [Measure Y-Y] is the final phase of that," Grant added.RELATED: See your sample ballot for the November 2018 electionBut Sally Smith, who attended the anti-tax rally, held a property tax bill she said was over ,000 on a modest San Diego home. She told 10News people are simply being pushed to the limit. "She may be at ,000," said Smith. "That's very, very difficult."Opponents maintain these bond measures will cover holes government doesn't want to talk about."It doesn't go where they are told it's going to go," said DeMaio. "The money's always diverted and siphoned off." 2366

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As six candidates took the stage Friday, the eyes on who would be the one to replace former Congressman Duncan Hunter focused mainly on three.Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar and Republicans Carl DeMaio and Darrell Issa. The three are polling among the top for two spots up for grabs in the March primary. The two highest vote-getters on March 3 will get a ticket to the November runoff for the 50th Congressional District seat.RELATED: 50th District candidates square off on stageHunter resigned in January after pleading guilty to one count of campaign fraud. Campa-Najjar is making another run for the seat after he narrowly lost in 2018 to Hunter, who was then under indictment. He opened the debate Friday. RELATED: New poll shows frontrunners to replace Duncan Hunter"For me it's about rewarding the middle class, lowering the cost of housing, making sure that health care is affordable, we will talk about all of that today," Campa-Najjar said. The debate mainly focused on housing. Former City Councilman DeMaio placed a lot of the blame for the state's high costs on Democrats in Sacramento. "We see people leaving because California is not what it once was," DeMaio said.RELATED: Issa secures two high-profile conservative endorsementsWith Democrats entirely behind Campa-Najjar, DeMaio and Issa have been attacking each other for that second spot in the runoff. Issa represented districts in San Diego County in Congress for nearly two decades. He did not run for re-election in 2018, saying he had plans to serve in the Trump administration. "The president nominated me not once, but twice, to serve in his administration but I was blocked by the Senate," Issa said.RELATED: Issa stands by ad ripped by his own partyThe race has garnered national attention mainly due to political attack ads between DeMaio and Issa. A recent Issa ad attacking DeMaio was criticized by his own party for displaying headlines that described DeMaio as gay. Still, Issa largely did not engage with DeMaio on the debate stage. Instead, it was Campa-Najjar who needled both. In his exchange, he took aim at DeMaio for always attacking state politicians.RELATED: San Diego Republican Party won't endorse a 50th District candidate"If you want to work on it run for governor man, half this room does not understand why you're running for Congress? All your proposals are about California," Campa-Najjar told DeMaio on stage. "And join Brian Jones in the Senate and help us reduce our taxes in California."Jones is also running for the 50th District seat."And the other half of the room knows exactly what I'm talking about," DeMaio responded to Campa-Najjar.RELATED: Who could take of the 50th District after Hunter's guilty pleaDeMaio says he can reform the state while serving in Congress."You can do both. It's called leadership," DeMaio added.Meanwhile, Issa says he would use his experience in Congress to be influential as soon as he's elected. "I believe with my 18 years of experience and seniority, I go right to the top of key committees," Issa said.Topics for debate included job growth, housing discrimination politics, and eliminating the cap on state and local tax deductions. 3199

"We are basically getting just over 70%."RELATED: What the FDA's review reveals about Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccineSan Diego County is expected to receive 28,275 doses of California's first allocation of 327,000 vaccine doses in mid-December. Wooten said there is about 39,000 personnel in the acute care hospital section alone."We anticipate that sometime next week, early next week, if not, on the weekend even, that we will get vaccines," Wooten said. She added that those first vaccines will be distributed to three "prepositioned locations" in the county. 2369
