SHANGHAI, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner paid a visit here Thursday as the last leg of her China trip.Shanghai was more prosperous and beautiful now, said Kirchner, who came to the city in 2004 for the first time, in a meeting with Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng Thursday morning.Over 40 heads of states and governments from various nations had visited Shanghai since the opening of the Shanghai World Expo on May 1, Han said, adding that 15 state and government chiefs were expected to attend the closing ceremony scheduled for the end of October.Kirchner said the Expo was a "real world gathering" and reiterated Argentina's support to the event.One hundred and eighty-nine countries and fifty-seven international organizations have participated the Expo.Deeply impressed by the sound construction and administration of Shanghai, Kirchner said the cities in other countries including those of Argentina should learn from Shanghai's development."We will introduce Shanghai's experience to Argentina after this China visit," she added.Kirchner visited the Chinese and Argentine Pavilions after the meeting.She will leave Shanghai and conclude her China visit later Thursday night.

LHASA, Tibet, June 8 (Xinhua) -- The 11th Panchen Lama on Tuesday visited rural homes in Shannan Prefecture and chatted with peasants before finishing his first visit to this part of southern Tibet."I never dreamed a Living Buddha would come to my home," said Mila, 49, a resident in Ztang Township.The maroon-robed Panchen Lama sat with Mila on a bench in the family's bright new concrete house and talked about a wide range of issues including local living standards, incomes and religious life.The 11th Panchen Lama gives head-touch blessings to local devotees in front of Sanyai Monastery in Nedong County of Shannan Prefecture, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, on June 8, 2010. The 11th Panchen Lama finised Tuesday the two-day visit in south Tibet's Shannan Prefecture where he held large prayer services and gave head-touch blessings to more than 5,000 local devotees.Patting the head of a three-year-old, the Panchen Lama, now in his 20s, told Mila's family to give the children a good education. He also told the family to work hard for a prosperous life."I will pray for you," the Panchen Lama said.The Panchen Lama gave head-touch blessings to locals as he walked from home to home. He also prayed at the thirteen-century-old Sanyai Monastery.The Panchen Lama started his tour to Shannan on Monday for his first visit to the area honored as the cradle of Tibetan civilization since he was enthroned as a Tibetan Buddhist leader in 1995.He returned to Lhasa late Tuesday.The 11th Panchen Lama, who spends most of his time since the enthronement studying Buddhism in Beijing, started his annual Tibet tour last Thursday, during which he visited a number of monasteries and participated in a variety of Buddhist events.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the massive mudslide in northwest China's Gansu Province has risen to 1,156 as of 4 p.m. Friday, with 588 still missing, local authorities said.The toll stood at 1,144 by Thursday afternoon.More than 1,500 survivors are living in tents or school classrooms while 8,300 have sought shelter with relatives and friends, said Zhao Minxue, head of the publicity department in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture which administers Zhouqu.Water and power supplies, and telecommunication services in Zhouqu are gradually back to normal thanks to swift repair efforts.Power has been resumed in the key regions of the county seat and at 60 percent of households, the provincial information office said in a statement Friday.Relief teams are digging new wells after finding two new drinking water sources and 21 unpolluted wells, it said.Gansu had received 120.4 million yuan (17.7 million U.S. dollars) in cash donations and relief materials by Friday afternoon, the provincial department of civil affairs said.Meanwhile, relief workers continued to clear the water course of the Bailong River, which overflowed after being blocked by debris, amid fears that more downpours could trigger new floods and mudslides.Rescuers tried to give dignity to the deceased as they were striving to search bodies in the debris. But this was no easy work sometimes as many bodies were buried meters deep in sludge."All the soldiers have done their best," said survivor Bai Chengxiang, 24. "If they could not find the remains of my aunt's family, I will have to accept the reality."

  

BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Commerce advised representatives from China's companies to hold off traveling to southern Kyrgyzstan for investment and trade as the deadly ethnic clashes there have killed at least 82 people and wounded 1,000 as of Saturday.The ministry suggested Chinese people and Chinese-funded companies in Kyrgyzstan monitor developments and take precautionary measures against personal injuries and property losses, the ministry said in a statement posted on its website.Kyrgyzstan's interim government has declared a state of emergency and a 24-hour curfew in the southern city of Osh, where riots erupted on Thursday when quarrels between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbek escalated into running street battles.

  

YICHUN, Heilongjiang, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- The government of Yichun, a city in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, has corrected Tuesday night's plane crash death toll to 42, saying one dead body that was torn apart in the disaster was formerly counted as two.A local publicity official said earlier on that 43 dead bodies were retrieved.According to the death roll released by the city government, the dead were aged roughly from 12 to 55, calculated from their birth dates indicated in their ID numbers. Among them, however, was a Chinese holding a passport and three crew members whose ID numbers were not available.Rescuers wrapped up the bodies early on Wednesday and have transported them to the city's funeral homes for families to identify them.The ERJ-190 jet, manufactured by the Brazilian aerospace conglomerate Embraer with maximum passenger capacity of 108, crashed near the runaway of Lindu airport of Yichun at 9:36 p.m. Tuesday, some 40 minutes after it took off from the provincial capital Harbin.Ninety-one passengers, including five children, and five crew members boarded the plane, sources with the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) said.Officials in Yichun confirmed a group of officials from Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security were also on board, including a vice minister and six division chiefs. Most of them survived with injuries, and the vice minister Sun Baoshu was in critical condition.
