As Columbus, Ohio’s mayor announced that the city’s statue of Christopher Columbus will come down, a petition is circulating to rename the city “Flavortown.”The legacy of Christopher Columbus has come into focus as the country comes to grips with the United States’ past with racism.The Christopher Columbus statue at Columbus’ City Hall is one of several across the country that are slated to come down. Statues in both San Francisco and Sacramento are also in the process of being removed.A separate statue of Christopher Columbus in Columbus, Ohio, will come down from the center of Columbus State Community College's campus. As of late Friday, more than 8,000 petitioners are calling for Columbus, Ohio’s renaming to Flavortown.“Columbus is an amazing city, but one whose name is tarnished by the very name itself,” the petition reads.“Why not rename the city Flavortown? The new name is twofold,” the petition adds. “For one, it honors Central Ohio's proud heritage as a culinary crossroads and one of the nation's largest test markets for the food industry. Secondly, cheflebrity Guy Fieri was born in Columbus.”Flavortown is Fieri's catchphrase, which he often says on episodes of "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives." Over the years, historians have accused Columbus of participating in slavery, murder and other atrocities against American natives in the 15th century. Despite this, Columbus was long hailed as a hero to the west, with a national holiday bestowed in his honor.“For many people in our community, the statue represents patriarchy, oppression and divisiveness. That does not represent our great city, and we will no longer live in the shadow of our ugly past,” Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther wrote in a statement. “Now is the right time to replace this statue with artwork that demonstrates our enduring fight to end racism and celebrate the themes of diversity and inclusion.”A number of residents responded to Ginther in opposition to removing the statue, citing that the statue represents the city's and country's history. 2050

An investigation into what led up to an explosion that hurt officers and a hostage situation in North Haven continued on Thursday.State police said a man held his wife hostage inside of a home on Quinnipiac Avenue for several days.She escaped, but he barricaded himself inside a barn near a house on the property.That's when police said the explosion happened on Wednesday night.Eight officers were hurt and the suspect is not in custody. Police said they continue to search for him.The area surrounding the property has been blocked off by rows of cruisers. Quinnipiac Avenue is closed between McArthur Road and Pent Way.North Haven police said they first responded around 2 p.m. on Wednesday.A woman went to the North Haven Police Department with a complaint about an incident at the Quinnipiac Avenue home.Police said the woman had managed to escape after she was held hostage for three days by her husband.Troopers told Channel 3 that they determined a tactical response was necessary.A SWAT team was called in to help.While police and the SWAT team were negotiating with the man, state police said there was an explosion at a barn near the home.Flames were captured in video that was recorded at the scene.The last time the man was seen was when he was barricaded inside of the barn."The suspect is not in custody at this time," said trooper Kelly Grant, Connecticut State Police. "They are still attempting to locate that suspect. They have asked the residents right in this general vicinity to shelter in place while they conducted this investigation."The eight tactical officers who were hurt in the explosion were taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital.None of their injuries were life-threatening.State police have taken over the investigation.  1762

An Ohio man slated to be executed on Wednesday will be allowed to use a special wedged-shape pillow as he is put to death by lethal injection, the Columbus Dispatch reported. Alva Campbell, 69, will lie on the pillow as a three-drug cocktail will be administered to execute Campbell after he was convicted for the kidnapping and killing of an 18-year-old Columbus man. Campbell was on parole at the time after being charged with aggravated murder from a 1972 killing. According to the Dispatch, Campbell has pulmonary problems and it is difficult for him to lie flat without choking.Last week, Ohio Gov. John Kasich said that he would not put a stop to the execution, despite a clemency request by Campbell's attorney.Campbell has also requested to be executed by firing squad, citing that a prison nurse was unable to find a suitable vein for an IV. A federal judge ruled out that as an option for Campbell. The Dispatch reported, citing court records, that Campbell uses a walker, relies on an external colostomy bag and requires four breathing treatments a day.
