SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Sodas and energy drinks in California could soon come with a warning about increased risks for diabetes and tooth decay under a bill that has narrowly cleared the state Senate. The Senate voted 21-11 on Thursday to require warning labels on sugar-sweetened drinks that contain 75 calories or more per 12 fluid ounces. The label would be on the front of the container, in bold type and separate from all other information. The bill passed despite significant opposition from the beverage industry. Records show the American Beverage Association spent more than 3,000 since January lobbying against the bill and others.Other proposals that would have taxed soda and banned "Big Gulp" style drinks were shelved earlier this year.Bill author Sen. Bill Monning says the measure would protect children's health. 841

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom says the state must do more to protect essential workers, many of whom are Latino, from the economic and health harms of the coronavirus. Newsom on Friday said he'll work with the Legislature to expand protections against evictions and expand workers compensation and paid sick leave. He enacted similar policies through executive order earlier this year but many expired or will soon. Latinos make up 39% of California’s population but 55% of confirmed positive coronavirus cases, according to state data. Newsom said the majority of farm workers, construction workers, cooks, food prep workers, truck drivers, cashiers and janitors are Latino. 708

ROME — Pope Francis has welcomed doctors and nurses from the coronavirus-ravaged region of Lombardy to the Vatican to thank them for their selfless work and “heroic” sacrifice. Francis dedicated one of his first post-lockdown audiences to Italy’s front-line medical personnel Saturday. He told the delegation that their example of professional competence and compassion would help Italy forge a new future of hope and solidarity. The northern region of Lombardy was the hardest-hit region in the onetime European epicenter of the pandemic. It has counted more than 92,000 of Italy’s 232,000 infections and half of Italy’s 34,500 dead. Francis also took a dig at some conservative priests who chafed at lockdown measures, calling their complaints “adolescent.” 766
