SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A second man has been charged in the smuggling of a Bengal tiger cub into the United States from Mexico on August 23, 2017.Eriberto Paniagua - who allegedly told officials at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry that the Bengal tiger cub at his feet was merely a “cat” - was indicted by a federal grand jury and made his first court appearance on Monday. According to the indictment unsealed today, the 21-year-old conspired with the driver of the car, 18-year-old Luis Valencia, and others to knowingly import the tiger cub into the United States. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A Pacific Beach man says his community is in need of a cleanup. He's raised hundreds of dollars to get it done.According to resident Adam Huntington, overgrown grass, untamed trees, and grimy sidewalks are just some of the mucky issues surrounding Pacific Beach.Huntington has been living in Pacific Beach for at least two decades."You've got beautiful architecture, beautiful masonry, that's just getting covered by grime and dirt."Huntington shared a video with 10News of a cruddy sidewalk on Garnet Avenue, one of Pacific Beach's main streets."We're in the middle of a pandemic right now," says Huntington. "We have an extremely unhealthy, unclean environment, and we force all of our restaurants to go outside and serve people."He hired a private company to power wash another area of Garnet Avenue over the weekend. The funds were raised by a GoFund Me Page. The cost of cleaning was ,200."We have people all over this community, wondering where our services are."We asked the city about why it's not using its services to clean up the area. A spokesperson said they don't have a statement at this time but encouraged anyone with a concern about cleanliness to report it on the city's "Get It Done" app.The city also tells 10News residents do not need a permit to clean or power wash a sidewalk on their own, but they must have a plan to prevent runoff from going into the storm drain. Huntington says he went with an eco-friendly company that followed those guidelines.The former lifeguard says to keep the beach area looking nice, he replaced the wooden barrier posts along the road that surrounds Crown Point."The reason people come to San Diego is to enjoy Mission Beach and Pacific Beach."With the help of two local hardware stores, Huntington says he was able to acquire power tools to continue to help spruce up the neighborhood.As for the overgrown brush, the city says its weed abatement program is back online since being paused due to COVID-19. 1988

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Veterans looking for a job during the Coronavirus Pandemic are learning to use virtual job fairs to grow their careers."It's sometimes difficult, but overall it's been a positive experience," says Army Veteran Steven Padilla, who has been looking for a job since March."You can only do so much interacting. You can't shake hands. You can't wait in line for a conversation."Padilla says his job search has been more difficult since the Pandemic hit. Companies have stopped hiring or removed job postings.He's not alone in looking for a job. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Veteran Unemployment skyrocketed during the Pandemic, peaking at 11.8% in April. That means more people competing for fewer positions.But RecruitMilitary.com, the Army's primary contractor for helping service members transition from the Army to civilian employment, says there are still plenty of jobs. They're hosting multiple virtual job fairs every week to help veterans find one."It's really just a way to dip your toes in the water and visiting a lot of companies," says Chris Stevens, the Vice President of RecruitMilitary.com.He says the company has gone from holding about 15 virtual job fairs each year to more than 130 planned for 2020."It's just like any other typical chat room," Stevens says. "Candidates and companies can go into private chats. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When President Trump visited San Diego in September, he made a special trip down to the border to tout the wall and its technological advances. The president has made border security a major part of his term, even calling for the addition of 5,000 border patrol agents.A new study from San Diego State University says the increased emphasis on stopping illegal crossings and drug smuggling could make those very agents the targets of corruption and bribe offers. "When one door is closed, they try to find another one which is open," said David Janscisc, the public affairs professor at SDSU who authored the study. Janscisc says the harder it gets for smugglers to get people or drugs into the U.S., the more likely they are to seek help from agents at ports of entry. "You can clear a car full of drugs just by not inspecting it," he said. Janscisc isn't saying Customs and Border Protection is corrupt, but wanted to study how corruption occurs. He based his study off of 160 cases of CBP corruption over 10 years, noting the agency has 60,000 employees. Janscisc found the employees with less than five years of experience were more likely to be involved in drug-related corruption. However, those who were there longer were more likely to commit immigration-related offenses, such as falsifying paperwork to help get someone into the country. In a statement, Customs and Border Protection said applicants go through a strict hiring process that could include polygraph tests. "After the hiring process, CBP applies proactive measures in the form of training, rules geared to ensure workplace integrity and oversight and management of frontline officers and agents by CBP leadership at every level," the statement said.
