He also called for global unity in resisting trade protectionism and safeguarding the stable international economic order, particularly the authority of the multilateral trading regime.
The remarks were made by He Lei, vice president of the Academy of Military Science of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, in response to remarks on the South China Sea made by U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis at the on-going 17th Asia Security Summit, also known as the Shangri-la Dialogue, which opened here on Friday.
"Trinidad and Tobago is China's largest trade partner in the English-speaking Caribbean region," Li said, adding that "both countries enjoy high economic complementarities and broad cooperative prospects."
"It is not a solo performance of China but a chorus of countries along the route," he said. "We encourage multinational companies to cooperate with Chinese companies to achieve mutual benefits and realize more substantial results."
During the consultations last weekend, both parties held in-depth and concrete discussions on some specific trade cooperation areas, particularly agriculture and energy, Gao told a press briefing.
