A Chick-fil-A employee in Georgia is being credited with saving a boy from getting strangled after the mother reportedly begged for help in the drive thru of the fast food restaurant. Security camera video shows Logan Simmons jumped out of the drive thru window and into the distressed customer's car. He then pulled out a knife and cut the boy's seat belt. "You could see he was turning red and losing pigmentation in his face," Simmons told WSB-TV. "I just jumped out the window and ran straight down to the car."WSB reported that the boy received a call an hour later from the boy's mom thanking him for his actions. WASHINGTON, D.C. – They are three simple digits that could be the difference between life and death. A proposed three-digit number – 9-8-8 – is on the verge of becoming the new nationwide hotline for suicide prevention. “I think that shortening the number to three digits really has the opportunity to save so many lives,” said Alison Malmon, founder of Active Minds, a national non-profit focusing on mental health. “The prominence that this three-digit number will bring to suicide prevention is extraordinary.” For Malmon, a new suicide prevention hotline is personal. “As the survivor of my brother's suicide, it really means so much to me to know that lives will be saved through culture change and through bringing more prominence to the issues around suicide prevention that this three-digit number will bring,” she said. For years, the suicide prevention hotline has been a 10-digit 800-number: 1- 800 – 273 – TALK. Mental health experts say shortening it makes it easier to remember and could save lives in the process. “If we were in an emergency situation, we're stressed and it's hard for us to remember a lot of things,” said Charles Ingoglia, president of the National Council for Behavioral Health. “And so, I think the idea behind moving to a three-digit number related to suicide is to facilitate people being able to contact help easily and quickly.” Each year, more than 47,000 people in the U.S. die by suicide: that’s one person, nearly every 12 minutes. “If you look at where we are now the highest numbers of suicide we've seen since World War II,” said Colleen Creighton of the American Association of Suicidology. “So, clearly we need to change something we need to get something done and having a really easily accessible three-digit code is the way to go.” It’s a move welcomed by those forced to face a loved ones’ loss to suicide. “There's so much change on the horizon,” Malmon said. Safehouse will be completely funded by donations. Every life it potentially saves, saves taxpayers from coroner reports, police investigations that result from overdose deaths. Safehouse could potentially open a safe injection site any day now, and according to board members the site will be modeled after a safe injection site in Canada. The Works, under Toronto Public Health’s opioid harm reduction program, opened in 2017. It’s had 60,000 visits in two years. “It’s bringing people inside. This results in less drug use out in the neighborhood as well and an opportunity to connect people to services,” said Rita Shashin with The Works. Every user who comes to the facility sits in a waiting room after injecting. They are monitored to make sure there isn’t a delayed overdose and so they are not high on the streets. Then, the user sits and talks to a councilor about personal issues, maybe what is leading to their use, and also about the idea of going to rehab. Hundreds of users who have visited The Works, have gone to rehab. About 1,000 people have overdosed but every one of those lives were saved. In fact, not a single safe injection site around the world has reported an overdose death in its facility and overdoses in the respective surrounding communities have gone down, in some cases by 30%. “Look no one involved with Safehouse, myself included, says this is the answer to the opioid crisis. This is the answer to one small segment of the opioid crisis,” said Rendell. A campaign launched by South Dakota's Gov. Kristi Noem is grabbing attention for its slogan "Meth: We're on it."As part of the campaign, a video released on Monday features a number of people of differing ages and backgrounds saying "I'm on meth." Given the national attention the ad campaign has garnered, Noem's goal to bring attention to the issue appears to be working. "I allocated money for meth education and awareness," Noem said. "Right now, my team is accepting bids from media companies for a targeted meth awareness campaign. We need to be more active and intentional in teaching kids the danger of meth use and the affect it can have on their lives."The state also launched a website that includes information on where to find treatment centers and other resources to fight meth addiction. According to Noem's office, 13 people died from meth in 2018, and more than 3,000 were arrested for meth offenses. 929
